It’s a parking one…

MegsLevante · 27/03/2023 06:01

Builders have blocked off 6 free parking areas on our road with bollards. This is a public road and those spaces are used by the residents because not everyone has a drive.

There has been a derelict house on the road for ages. One of the parking spaces is in front of this house but the other 5 aren’t. The house has been sold recently (no idea who to) and they have builders in. These builders have put bollards (last week) and now traffic lights on to block off these spaces.

They have also left these bollards and traffic lights in place over the weekend when they aren’t doing any work.

Are they allowed to do this on a public road? If they’ve got traffic lights, have they got the council involved, or can anyone put up traffic lights? Who do we complain to?

The builders that have been employed to renovate the house have showed exactly how they intend to behave for the next few months by their behaviour so far.

What by outrageously parking on the public highway outside their current place of work. Absolutely outrageous behaviour.

QuertyGirl · 27/03/2023 09:00

What do you want the builders to do?

Given your attitude on this thread I think they have had a narrow escape in not giving you and the other WhatsApp warriors their contact details. I can’t imagine you would give them a moments peace. No doubt you would have messaged them this morning demanding to know at what time the cones would be removed or some other such nonsense

Nope, if we had been warned in advance we wouldn’t have been annoyed with them. You are making wild assumptions.

I think I’d describe you as “over-invested” OP. I’d try and unclench a bit if I were you?

As you have repeatedly stated, it’s a public road, these workmen are just trying to do their job, not deliberately piss you off.

Blocking absolutely everyone else from parking in a public highway, even when they aren’t at their place of work, is outrageous behaviour, yes.

Come on op. You know in your heart of hearts that’s not true is it? You’d just have been irritated in advance as well as during this massive and outrageous affront to your human rights.

They were doing their job over the weekend were they? There was no work going on in the house over the weekend when they had blocked it off. Those parking spaces aren’t theirs. They aren’t ours either but we don’t block them off and stop other people parking in them.

I agree that a kite would have been polite.

I also agree that the 3 cans reserving (by traffic cone) 6 parking spaces over a weekend is unreasonable.

However

  • the note thing might be an oversight that can surely be forgiven.
-The owners are probably oblivious to the cones being left in place over the weekend. - No one appears to have spoken to the gilders and asked for their consideration.
  • the neighbours have been corresponding, speculations and plotting about the new neighbours before they've even moved in. You all seem to have decided they're going to be trouble and not the sort you'd usually welcome.

Calm down. Be reasonable. Communicate and keep an open mind.

As I have repeatedly stated, if we had been warned, we could have made alternative arrangements.

Local parking for local people.

There's nothing for you here 😁

You haven’t actually seen the WhatsApp messages, so your statement about what has been said in the WhatsApp group is just something you have made up and are trying to present as fact.

If you have seen the builders vans and the company why not simply phone them and ask why? And then ask could they not block off on days they not working and give the residents timeframes so u all can then work out which days they will be there? Seems obvious to me to simply do this.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/03/2023 09:15

The position of the traffic cones will be to comply with both the New Roads and Street Works Act and also Health and Safety regulations.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/03/2023 09:17

I’m not projecting (do you know what that means?). I’m basing my comments on your slightly bonkers level of outrage about this.

So just make alternative arrangements now eh?

the blocking off before the gas works is gone, passed, nothing you can do now but let it go. Why not make these magical “alternative arrangements” now for after the gas works, just in case, in case the workmen park on the public highway just as they are entitled too.

Id also step away from WhatsApp for a bit if I were you. It seems to be stoking the flames!

seriously, you’re going to make yourself ill!

YorkieTheRabbit · 27/03/2023 09:21

There will be a large skip arriving before long, that will have a license approved by the local council to allow it to be parked on the public road. A skip will be at the address for the entire renovation.
All trades people will have vans which will be parked as close as possible to where they are working.
Deliveries from building companies in large vehicles, these will require getting close to the property.
On week days you will see a significant amount of disruption to parking, possibly Saturdays too.

Tessasanderson · 27/03/2023 09:23

You need to get over yourself. You seem to be some self appointed speaker for the entire street who deals in tittle tattle over whatsapp. Have you been sharpening the pitchforks all weekend?

Come on. The builders need access to their tools, vehicles and some space. Yes they have bent the rules a little by coning (Not bollards) off a few spaces but they are probably just trying to make a statement early on. How neighbourly would it be to accept this but go over and have a civil discussion about weekends? You dont seem to value that need against your right to parking close by. I havent read once from you about alternatives for you to park. Is there some parking 100/200/300/500 yards away? Is it chronic parking so you cant park for 1 mile? Are you incapable of walking? Are you old?

At the end of the day its says as much about you as it does about anyone else how you react to this. So far you have been aggressive and rounded up a posse of neighbours to attack.

AlisonDonut · 27/03/2023 09:24

Yes the new neighbours have probably been rude. But it is probably someone who is likely to do it up and sell it on so be prepared for this for a long time yet.

DreamingofGinoclock · 27/03/2023 09:24

I think there seems to be two things going on here...

  1. Builders doing general works putting out comes so they have space for there vans when they turn up to work on the house
  1. The authorised work to the gas supply for which there is a permit for the relevant utility workers to put up traffic lights / block off some of the road

So...

For 1 if I needed to park I would just get out of my car and move the cones to park as presumably there is no permit/official signage for this ... parking spaces cannot be reserved the builders will have to just deal with parking where available when the turn up (presumably that's what all the residents have to do) ...it may have been different if the owners had politely asked residents can x and y spaces be left free between A and B times as this shows consideration so I would probably be happy to help out

As OP agrees there is nothing that can be done about to and just have to grit and bear it till the permit runs out

DreamingofGinoclock · 27/03/2023 09:25

*out cones

DreamingofGinoclock · 27/03/2023 09:25

Sorry for typos 🤣

BeckyBeehive · 27/03/2023 09:26

It may be a property developer who's bought the house and once it's renovated they'll put it on the market. Or, the people who have bought it have hired a builder to do the works and were assured by the builder that all notices would be dealt with as part of the contract. Don't demonise the owners - they're probably oblivious to the whole thing.

Personally I'd go and speak to the project manager and explain the situation.

As I have repeatedly stated, if we had been warned, we could have made alternative arrangements.

So now you know what is going on, can you not still make those alternative arrangements instead of getting so worked up over it?

BowiesJumper · 27/03/2023 09:41

The new owners probably don’t know that loads of parking spaces have been blocked off! I don’t think you’re being entirely fair. And whilst I get it’s really annoying and inconvenient, in the great scheme of things it doesn’t really matter does it?

Runforthehills754 · 27/03/2023 09:44

People just cannot cope with being inconvenienced these days.
