Did anyone else grow up thinking they hated things just because their parents hated the thing?

Cats, growing up, my parents were VERY vocal about hating cats. So I grew up thinking I hated them too but never really thought about why. Then one day when I was a teenager, DH (then BF) took me to meet his aunt and I also met her cat who was a lovely thing. I sat there and thought about why I hated cats, and I came to zero conclusions. It slowly dawned on me that I didn't hate them after all, I actually really like them! We're hoping to get a cat at some point this year and I can't wait 🙂

Jack Russells, my parents were also pretty vocal about really disliking them too, "Horrible yappy things" and the same with cats. I always thought I didn't like them too until I actually thought about why I didn't and came up with no answer.

Meatloaf (musician, not food)
Queen (band, not the Queen)
Ford cars, both my parents despised them, my dad probably still does but my mum is now on her second Ford and she loves it, me and DH are also on our second Ford and it's definitely our favourite car we've ever had so far!

Anyone else?

My dad was like this about KFC and McDonalds but especially KFC. I didnt eat it until I was in my 40's. And had never had a mcDs breakfast before I was late 40's 😂

He was practically rabid in his dislike of Microsoft and Bill fucking Gates as he raged about him.
Dads been dead 10 years now but I can still in my mind hear him raging about such things

Yes, I was taught I didn't like nuts, coleslaw 🙄or anything spicy.

DH here up convinced he hated anything French. Wine, apples, cheese....

Similar here. Apparently I don't like any fish/seafood. I haven't tried much but everything I've tried I've liked, so thanks mum!

MrsJaneyLloydFoxe · 26/03/2023 22:26

Yes, small dogs (‘too yappy’), and religion (‘a load of nonsense’).

I quite like little dogs these days and I go to church occasionally. Mother is aghast.

Smoked bacon. It's been a revelation Grin

beachruns · 26/03/2023 22:27

Foreign food!

had my first curry at 19.

Ireallydohope · 26/03/2023 22:27

Bizarrely also cats because DM was not a fan. I don't love them but I've grown not to dislike them for no reason

AdoraBell · 26/03/2023 22:28

Cats for me too. I still don’t actively like them.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 26/03/2023 22:30

Tbh, isn't it a part of growing up? You can say the same about the things they liked too?

Slimjimtobe · 26/03/2023 22:30

My parents are racist and homophobic & generally uneducated and like drama

so I kind of came into my own from the age of ten or eleven and left home at 17

but for years I went along with their judgments (not those against people but just every negative thing) but I certainly don’t engage in their awful options and behaviour

Mydaughterskeeper · 26/03/2023 22:30

I’m very conflicted about fabric conditioner. I grew up hearing about how unnecessary it was and the ‘overpowering smell’ but now I find myself sniffing and stroking other peoples’ laundry. Haven’t mustered the courage to buy any yet though.

Discwriter · 26/03/2023 22:32

Came here to say cats too. Still don't like them at all.

Hardbackwriter · 26/03/2023 22:33

This is probably the single thing I find most irritating about DH - his mum (who is lovely, kind but somewhat stubborn person and a very black and white thinker) has such a long list of things that she hates, mostly because they're 'common' or 'too popular'. DH was very much taught as a child that there was only one right view all these normal, harmless things (e.g. football, parties, the beach and swimming at all, going anywhere that might have tourists, food that could be declared 'too rich'). A lot of them he's changed his mind on, but every now and again I do find myself asking 'but have you actually tried it?', like I do with my four year old!

Kylie Minogue
every song is a hit I wish I’d stopped turning the radio off at her mere mention sooner!!!

ilovewispas · 26/03/2023 23:06

Tuna - for poor people apparently

I now love jacket potatoes with tuna and cheese. My mum would be outraged!

Crinkle77 · 26/03/2023 23:11

Thought I hated scrambled eggs cosmy mum said they're rubbery. Probably didn't try them till my late teens and loved them. Also butterkist popcorn after my mum said it made my sister sick so thought it would make me sick too.

CountingMareep · 26/03/2023 23:24

Abba, David Bowie, television in general apart from a few programmes I can count on one hand. It wasn’t my parents though; musically it was my DB2 who hated anything not 70s prog/hard rock/heavy metal, and my otherwise lovely GF who derided all popular culture as ‘rrrabeesh’. I was at university before I realised that Elton John’s songs were quite nice to listen to really.

Goodyetalso · 26/03/2023 23:28

Another one who thought they didn’t like cats because my dad hated them. I somehow ended up with a cat a couple of years ago. She is absolutely delightful and has completely changed my mind…and my dad is completely smitten with her every time he comes to visit so it looks as though he only thought he hated cats because his parents dislikes them too.

WormEater · 26/03/2023 23:29

Motorbikes, football and small happy dogs.

Whilst I have no intention of doing / getting any of those things, I certainly don't have any strong feelings about them now.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 26/03/2023 23:31

How do I convince my kid that she doesn't like cats? Despite my loathing of them I've somehow not managed to pass it on to DD, which means I've been living with one of the flipping things for the past 3 years

liveforsummer · 26/03/2023 23:38

Tory party - they were right though!

daisy1765 · 26/03/2023 23:40

pubs. My Dad always said they were common places for common people. Years later, when I went to a pub for the first time, I realised they were lovely and very civilised places (well, apart from Spoons on a Saturday night Grin)

WitheredandOld · 26/03/2023 23:50

My parents had some fairly elitist views. I had to consciously train myself to think differently as I got older.

All welfare recipients are dole bludgers, for example.

BeanzToastie · 26/03/2023 23:59

Marmite! Didn't try it til I was a teen and had it at a friend's sleepover. Wow - I couldn't believe my tastebuds!
