Cath kidston dresses, do people wear these??

Followed a fb link to the Cath Kidston website. Many of the dresses are like these. I personally think they are very dated, fussy, and not flattering. Do people wear this stuff? Or is it that this is high fashion and I'm just completely out of touch!!!

seems to have started quite a debate. It’s not my taste or would suit me at all, but everybody has their own taste. I was just genuinely curious if this was a style that people still wore. I’m a jeans and jumper person for every day and then some more dressy stuff for going out.

I don't think there is a debate?! Whether or not you like them is a question of personal taste but I think that it is established fact that yes, people do buy and wear these clothes. It also seems to be a pretty broad consensus that people should buy and wear what they like, thankfully!

Riapia · 25/03/2023 14:47

Even the models look less than thrilled having to wear them.

They look like cosplay. Too chintzy. The second dress makes me think of a nighty. I did wear quite a few florals when younger, but these are too much.

Maireas · 25/03/2023 15:20

Well, @Testarossa44 , I suppose it depends where you live, but where I am these kind of dresses do seem very popular. As I said upthread, women tend to wear them with white trainers and a denim jacket. Some of our sixth form girls wear this kind of thing. Although the others tend to go down the leggings and crop top look. It's good to have variety!

Have a look at the models wearing Cos. They all like they've recently received bad news.

Risengrød · 25/03/2023 15:27

I like the first dress, on the left, but wouldn't wear it. Twee springs to mind.

Vintage Kidston is well worth looking out for @Lovelyring and great quality.

Cocolapew · 25/03/2023 15:29

The Care Bears dress was always selling out so someone is buying it.

I noticed some quite over the top flouncy stuff going on in the Tesco clothes section the other day.

Trying to do a link but can't.

Laiste · 25/03/2023 15:34

It was prints and frills and tiered skirts and buttons/tie necks all on the same garments.

crymeout · 25/03/2023 16:13

@Maireas I think that your comment re The Apprentice this year is true, but I think Megan was the exception to that- I thought that she looked good and didn't wear anything really tight/short iirc. DP and I couldn't get over what some of them were wearing though Shock

mondaytosunday · 25/03/2023 16:18

Never seen anyone where that style since the 70s. I know prairie was in last year but not that I could tell! Pretty floaty florals, yes, but much more body conscious and skinny straps.

Notanothernewname · 25/03/2023 16:31

Reminds me of the maternity dresses my mum used to wear in the 80s.

I do know someone who wears those floral midi dresses but I've never seen her in pencil skirts or mini skirts which is what I wear. I'd look a right frump, very matronly, if I wore a floaty, floral midi dress.

You're right about Megan, she was a bit different. Some of the outfits were extraordinary. I'm wondering why Rochelle did her presentation in that jacket, for example. Not one of them looked good imo.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 16:42

The blue one has an adult baby kink vibe. V strange.

The brown one isn’t so weird, Joe Brown has that sort of stuff. It can look ok on some people

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 16:46

Bauhausstolemyhair · 25/03/2023 11:21

They're the sort of dresses that my mum desperately wishes I'd wear with a navy cardigan draped round my shoulders. She was practically crying at all the naice women on the south coast beach we visited last summer. You know the type, about three couples, loads of kids, men talking money and the women sitting pretty with their lovely hair and dresses.

Me? I'm very short and couldn't pull that style off if I tried. I'd look like a dumpy little extra from a fundamentalist Christian sect.

I do however put my DD in their kids stuff. Which softens my mother's heartache. But just a bit.

😆

Your poor mum..

Maireas · 25/03/2023 13:47

That's nice, @2pence - quirky and different. Which ones did you buy?

Peace Dragon and Paisley Square neck, couldn't resist!

dudsville · 26/03/2023 05:15

To the poster upthread, those dresses are far too revealing, vain and flamboyant to be Amish!

Anyway, isn't this style of CK dress called cottagecore?

MysteryBelle · 26/03/2023 05:46

I like CK purses, and I like long floral dresses but those two are hideous.

ShandaLear · 26/03/2023 05:56

This is why Cath Kidson is no longer on the high street. But there’s a market for this sort of thing if you’re into Amishcore.

@Maireas ironically the most expensive thing I've ever made is a pair of simple Liberty cotton lawn pyjamas.

I have several lengths of Liberty cotton, and Liberty wool challis in my stash and I’m thinking of making pyjamas now.

I find CK a bit to cutest but at least it’s cotton, not yucky polyester. I love the blue and white dress fabric. And really, is this “shapeless” style on short women any worse than bodycon style on fat women?

Fluffodils · 26/03/2023 07:43

I love the first one. The second once is ok too but I wouldn't go for the matching hat personally

110APiccadilly · 26/03/2023 07:44

My mum would wear them. I wouldn't.

Presumably they get the cash of people like my mum (a savvy move, frankly, as I have no spare money to spend on clothes right now, and she does!)

Fluffodils · 26/03/2023 07:46

There's a thread in style and beauty where people post what they are wearing today there's some fabulous use of colour going on that's made me think I'm just stuck in my ways of dark navy and grey. I might see what CK has to brighten things up a bit.

What's wrong with body on on a larger lady?
