Cath kidston dresses, do people wear these??

Followed a fb link to the Cath Kidston website. Many of the dresses are like these. I personally think they are very dated, fussy, and not flattering. Do people wear this stuff? Or is it that this is high fashion and I'm just completely out of touch!!!

Not my style at all. They look a bit 'Middle America' to me. The sort of thing someone wears in Nowheresville Oklahoma.

Firsttimecaller · 25/03/2023 10:54

Out of curiosity I went to the website. Very entertaining! Especially the matching parent-child dresses in Beatrix Potter prints. It's all very "Utah" or cosplaying tradwife.

Sugarmicetails · 25/03/2023 11:01

@Maireas 🥰it’s stunning isn’t it! I’d go look at it in Liberty’s every time I was in London!

Agreed with the cotton! I don’t feel like the fall of those dresses works well with polyester!

I sew my own clothes and follow others that also do on instagram. There is definitely a market for those dresses and people pay £££ for Liberty fabrics to create their own similar looks.

Maireas · 25/03/2023 11:18

I love those Liberty fabrics. That cotton is lovely to wear, and perfect in warm weather.

Bauhausstolemyhair · 25/03/2023 11:21

They're the sort of dresses that my mum desperately wishes I'd wear with a navy cardigan draped round my shoulders. She was practically crying at all the naice women on the south coast beach we visited last summer. You know the type, about three couples, loads of kids, men talking money and the women sitting pretty with their lovely hair and dresses.

Me? I'm very short and couldn't pull that style off if I tried. I'd look like a dumpy little extra from a fundamentalist Christian sect.

I do however put my DD in their kids stuff. Which softens my mother's heartache. But just a bit.

@Maireas ironically the most expensive thing I've ever made is a pair of simple Liberty cotton lawn pyjamas.

I bet they were the best jammies you ever had!

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/03/2023 11:29

I already have my eye on the first one. The second one, hell no. It reminds me of the awful maternity wear when I had my eldest.

toucaninjapan · 25/03/2023 11:31

I actually like the 2nd dress and I think it would suit me! Grin

Schmutter · 25/03/2023 11:32

Gosh they are utterly hideous.

The second one in particular 😂

I love that they’ve added a matching baseball cap - as if it isn’t horrific enough.

I quite like their stuff, and I think it quite suits me. I'm tall and slim, and I think you probably do need to be. When I was in my early 20s I dressed entirely in a sort of charity-shop chic, blue stocking, slightly sexy librarian sort of way - I didn't actually buy Kath Kidston, which would have been out of my budget, but I loved the style. I thought I looked amazing, and I had plenty of willing suitors...

'Willing suitors' ?!! Was it the Victorian era?

I guess these dresses do suit some people's quirky style. I'd look like Mrs Doubtfire.

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/03/2023 11:34

Sorry , stupid phone failed me.

MidnightMeltdown · 25/03/2023 11:43

I quite like them. Better something like that than the mind numbingly boring jeans and a jumper look

Which is what I suspect people in middle America and Oklahoma actually wear.

blebbleb · 25/03/2023 12:23

I have loads of cath kidston dresses. More of the jersey ones. I've always loved girly/vintage style. Not fussed if it's fashionable. I think it suits me. Not a fan of plain tops and trousers.

2pence · 25/03/2023 12:45

Just checked out Kath Kitson's dresses because of this thread (not on my radar) and have bought two in the sale!

So, yes, people DO buy them, I just did!

Thanks so much for this thread, even if you were doing it to sneer at my taste. I just love quirky fashion and can't wait to get my two new outfits.

Waiting for their fab Harry Potter Herbology dress to go on sale next... www.cathkidston.com/en-gb/womens/clothing/dresses/106464518820.html

It was a joke...!

Maireas · 25/03/2023 13:47

That's nice, @2pence - quirky and different. Which ones did you buy?

Amish was what I thought of too. 😂

Would be ideal for churning butter on a wooden porch of a rural American farmhouse.

Not to my taste at all but each to their own!

I love a bit of Amish! This has made me nostalgically remember that I had a whole thread on S&B a few years ago where people tried to talk me out of looking Amish at a wedding, and I slowly realized over the course of the thread that I actually wished to look that way: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/3563675-Does-this-dress-make-me-look-a-bit-nineteenth-century

Good for you, @Hardbackwriter ! I think that you just have to find your style and look, it definitely gives you confidence and makes dressing a lot of fun. Some time ago I decided that I would never wear beige or grey, and only wear black if I was going to a funeral. I've embraced colour in a big way and love it!

NotMeNoNo · 25/03/2023 14:18

Flowery midi dresses like this have been in fashion for several years. Loads of people wear them. It feels a bit late for baffled comments about shapeless Amish sack dresses.

Also, Cath Kidston have been selling flowery all over stuff for decades. It's practically the only thing they do.

On the plus side if you stil have any original Laura Ashley from the 70s and 80s you're already equipped.
