So what makes the ‘modest’ clothing list??

Was browsing the M&S app and came across an option for Modest Clothing in the Women’s drop down list. So are they saying all clothing items outside of this is deemed not modest? And who decides what is modest? If I cover myself with a duvet do I become ‘extra modest’??

So what makes the ‘modest’ clothing list??

If you wanted to know, you could have just clicked on the list?

TomeTome · 25/03/2023 00:44

It means covering shoulders, arms, legs, cleavage. Surely you know that?

Capibr · 25/03/2023 00:46

It's been an option for years on m&s. It's just a curated collection of clothes for people who want to keep more covered for religious or just because reasons.

alexdgr8 · 25/03/2023 00:50

i don't think this is a genuine question.
OP sounds querulous.
it is a growing market and any sensible retailer wants a slice of it.

Greenshake · 25/03/2023 00:54

OP desperately trying to whip up outrage… and failing miserably.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 25/03/2023 00:57

Babe it's a guide for people who want to be modest for religion.

So long sleeves, non fitted items etc

Azandme · 25/03/2023 01:04

Lots of retailers do this, as they ought.

NevieSticks · 25/03/2023 01:07

It's actually not that different to much of their stuff- a couple of models wearing hijab but other than that just shirts, trousers dresses etc.

Tbh I always thought it was a fucking offensive term since it logically follows that anything not corresponding to these strictures must be immodest.

TomeTome · 25/03/2023 01:42

What would you prefer them to call it?

Stop policing what women wear. You’ll be demanding women remove clothing on beaches next. Not you body not your choice.

greenspaces4peace · 25/03/2023 01:49

Perfectly fine descriptor and filter, as is strapless high/low cut.

sashh · 25/03/2023 01:54

I hate this label. Modest is different to different people.

Neither of my grandmothers would have worn trousers.

Strict Christian women and some Orthodox Jewish women do not wear trousers.

Most Muslim women will wear trousers, I used to work with a Muslim woman who considered a skirt that was just above her knees modest as long as it was worn with opaque tights.

ShippingNews · 25/03/2023 03:49

I don't get why anyone would care about this term. It makes perfect sense to me - I don't need to check out the modest clothing section of the shop, but I understand what would be there. What else would you call it ?

PopsicleHustler · 25/03/2023 04:12

I would just naturally assume, without having to click on it, that it's a selection of clothing that is for Muslim women. Which is fine because it says modest and Muslim women dress modest, which is covered! Don't really see a problem.. its not like a bikini is going to be in the modest section because bikini is not covering. Its not going to be categorised as modest and its revealing. I.e showing body parts

MissTrip82 · 25/03/2023 05:28

I’ve worked in communities that required modest clothing. It sounds funny but most of my tops etc weren’t ok despite being fairly bland mainstream items. Nothing low-cut, fitted, sleeveless etc. I did have to buy some new items to work there.

tuvamoodyson · 25/03/2023 05:30

Don’t know…click on the link, that’ll tell you.

Obviouspretzel · 25/03/2023 06:06

I'm trying to imagine how I could ever get worked up over a category on a clothes retailer's website... I think we all have an idea of what you're really bothered by here.

FoxCorner · 25/03/2023 06:10

They're not saying other clothes are immodest. They're trying to cater for some religious groups

loislovesstewie · 25/03/2023 06:16

Actually I object to the term because if it's not 'modest' then what is it? Immodest? Dressing like a tart? Look if anyone wants to wear an item of clothing then is it beyond common-sense to look for 'long sleeved top' for example? What constitutes 'modest' anyway? If we are talking about Muslim or Jewish women then even there you will find differences. It's only recently that wearing of hijab has become common, 20-30 or 40 years ago I worked with Muslim women who didn't cover hair, wore short-sleeved tops and slightly longer skirts. They were observant ,but to them, they were dressing appropriately for their religion. I'm not policing what women wear, it's their business, but I object to the idea that it has to be called modest, because what does that make other, perfectly usual , clothes?

WashAsDelicates · 25/03/2023 07:10

Why are you giving 'modest' a value judgement? If you're not bothered by modesty, what's wrong with 'immodest'?

CoalTit · 25/03/2023 07:18

Someone on here pointed out years ago that "modest" is a euphemism used because "compliant" or "halal" sounds really terrible.

borntobequiet · 25/03/2023 07:19

If I cover myself with a duvet do I become ‘extra modest’??

No, you become a queen sized bed.

Get over yourself.

Sandysandwich · 25/03/2023 07:19

Weird thing to get upset about, its a pretty widely used term for a particular way of dressing. It's just going to mean its the clothes on their website that have the highest coverage etc.

Its like seeing the 'jeans and a nice top' section on some websites and being furious- Does that mean all the other tops are not nice??!?!? I bought a top from the 'blouse' section does that mean its an UnNice top?!?! Who decides which of the tops are nice enough to go in this special catagory?!?!
When its just an outfit filter for casual events.

Like no, its not a moral judgement bracket its just to make things easier for people who dress a certain way
