Sickness bug going on three days is this normal ?

Ds 8 is really poorly with a sick bug, no diorreah just being sick. The last time he was sick was yesterday about noon. He won't eat at all, sipping fluids but just won't eat. He said he feels awful and has sunken eyes and just generally looks terrible. I have tried him with toast which he is refusing, salted hula hoops which he is refusing, just starting to worry now as usually with a sickness bug you're sick for a few hours and then start to get better but he doesn't seem to be getting any better yet. He slept from 4pm yesterday until this morning didn't wake apart from to heave

Some bugs last longer.

Noro floored me four straight days.
Food poisoning was almost two weeks.

sckbug · 24/03/2023 09:07

Okay thanks. Do I need to get some light food into him ? I know they say just fluids is important but thinking food will at least give him some energy ?

Yes my dc had it last week. It lasted on and off for about a week. Sick then nauseated then ok the next day then sick again the next day. Had one more cycle of this then she started feeling sick less and less over the following days. She’s absolutely fine now and back to eating normally x

You can't make him eat if he's not ready - he can listen to his body. I was so ill I didn't eat for 9 days once but it was ok as I was in bed the vast majority of the time.

When he does start to fancy something, start off slowly with the BRAT diet. In the meantime ice lollies, jelly and diluted juice will have a few calories, but it's the hydration he needs most.

Sotired22 · 24/03/2023 09:18

I would call the GP and ask for a same day telephone appointment just to describe his symptoms to a doctor and get some reassurance. It’s ok other people saying he’ll be fine but they don’t know that. Trust your instincts and seek medical advice. Check for signs of dehydration as well.

OnMyWayToSenility · 24/03/2023 09:20

Try him with some full sugar lemonade.
Really helps rehydrate and stop feeling sick.

Small sips, don't glug , as he will throw up again.

bloodywhitecat · 24/03/2023 09:21

What fluids is he taking, can you get some Diaoralyte into him?

OnMyWayToSenility · 24/03/2023 09:23

Hydration is best right now, it will really help calm is stomach. Sometimes the cycle of being sick and becoming dehydrated makes you feel more sick!

Woodywasatwat · 24/03/2023 09:24

My two year old was sick for 4 days last week.

Don’t worry about food. Just make sure he’s sipping water and isn’t getting dehydrated.

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 24/03/2023 09:26

I would normally say don’t worry as some sickness bugs do go on for days, it’s not always just a 24-48 hour thing. However that is a really long time to sleep so I would be a bit worried too. I’d get him to the GP for a once over.

sckbug · 24/03/2023 09:30

He is obviously normally bouncing round as 8 year olds do, I know he's poorly but just thought he'd be perking up a little now.

I have been giving him water, he's had sugary tea which he's enjoyed and now he's got some Lucozade sport which he's sipping. He also has a low grade fever on and off which goes down with Calpol

I have some diarolyte in the cupboard but it's a good 3 years old does that stuff go off ? ?

I had norovirus last month. It started on a Monday morning and the diarrhoea didn't end until Friday morning. Vomiting lasted about 10 hours. It was bloody awful. My appetite was not back to normal for about another 2 weeks after that.

deflatedbirthday · 24/03/2023 09:40

Norovirus is awful! I laid on the bathroom floor for 2 days straight. Every time I moved I vomited and I had diarrhoea for a week. I lost about a stone in a week.

Poor kid! Hope he feels better soon!

sckbug · 24/03/2023 09:41

I'm not sure it's noro as he hasn't had any diarreah just sickness

OP posts:
sckbug · 24/03/2023 09:42

But by the sounds of it I need to get noro to shift this baby weight 😆

We don't eat with sickness bugs to starve the bugs, so I wouldn't worry about him not eating. Fluids are important and try to give him a rehydration sachet. Make sure you keep checking for signs of dehydration.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 24/03/2023 09:56

If he has a fever then his stomach won't be doing much food digestion ('feed a cold but starve a fever ' is probably based on how you feel in those cases)

If he is peeing- that is a good sign.

It isn't unheard of to be sick this long and it is ok to be not eating for a few days- so don't worry about that- but if you feel worried about how ill he seems, do ring 111 to discuss.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 24/03/2023 09:57

The Dioralyte will have a BB date on the box. I took some that was a year out of date and was fine. It won't go off, just might not be as effective but I'd still use it.

OdeToBarney · 24/03/2023 10:01

Yeah we had noro last month and DD was sick for 5 days. Get well soon to your DS. Plenty of fluids (juice good in case blood sugar gets low) and rest.

sckbug · 24/03/2023 15:29

What are the differences between food poisoning and a sickness bug ??

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/03/2023 15:31

Give him rehydration sachets, they work wonders.

sckbug · 24/03/2023 16:09

He won't drink ! Just woke him up from a nap and he's really not himself couldn't get him to talk back to us for ages, wondering if he needs to be seen now

OP posts:
sckbug · 24/03/2023 16:14

He's gone back to sleep now. We've given him some water in a syringe will this be okay getting fluids into this way?

OP posts:
youmustbemad · 24/03/2023 16:18

I think if he's not responding to you normally I'd either call 111 or go to A&E, that's quite alarming. Syringing fluids definitely better than nothing but he might already be really dehydrated so might not be sufficient, I would have thought.

Laurama91 · 24/03/2023 16:34

I had some kind of bug recently. Doctor told me could last a week. I felt nauseous for over week. Previously when I was ill doctors told me they weren't bothered if I wasn't eating much as long as I was drinking enough
