Have you ever heard Concorde's sonic boom?

I was watching a random YouTube video and the sonic boom was mentioned and the guy was saying that it couldn't possibly have been Concorde as they didn't go supersonic over land. Which is true, but they did speed up as soon as they were far enough from land for it to be a distant (and therefore quieter) boom. I used to hear it in my childhood when I was on holiday in Kerry. The video was specifically about a place in the west of Newfoundland so I think it's quite likely that they might have heard the boom there.

Anyway, it got me thinking that I'd never thought about how rare it might be to have heard a sonic boom. Where have other people heard it?

I've heard it on the Fylde Coast from BAE last year

No, but we loved seeing it fly over (SW London) - magnificent.

Mummyratbag · 23/03/2023 10:35

Grew up in Cornwall in the 80s - we could hear it daily, if I remember correctly. About 8 in the evening as it moved away from land and over the Atlantic..

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/03/2023 10:35

Yes. It flew over my parents' house in Berkshire.

lieselotte · 23/03/2023 10:38

Yes. I used to work near Heathrow so heard it taking off (not sonic boom but very very loud) and when I was younger we used to hear it every evening in Devon. I don't think we got the full "boom" but there was a sort of click in the atmosphere as it approached the sound barrier.

EducatingArti · 23/03/2023 10:39

Yes. I was a child in Gloucestershire in the 1970s. Used to see the prototypes flying out from Bristol fairly regularly. I definitely remember seeing the plane then hearing it's noise afterwards ( ie it was flying faster than the speed of sound which I was regularly told by adults was remarkable but as a 7 year old wasn't that impressed!)

Lonelycrab · 23/03/2023 10:41

Not heard it myself but around the time it was being decommissioned, I was at work in South London where we had a roof terrace, there were several Concordes (maybe 4?) flying into Heathrow and from the roof we could see a line of them coming into land, one after the other.

Just found it on YouTube.

Yes, my great aunt lived in Windsor right under the flight path.

girlwhowearsglasses · 23/03/2023 11:15

Yep - in North Devon Coast as PP above - the evening flight out used to go sonic after leaving the coast

Joystir59 · 23/03/2023 11:20

Yes, when I lived and worked in Reading

FoxFeatures · 23/03/2023 11:23

I used to hear it regularly when I was riding in Bushy Park. It wasn't the boom, but it was much louder than any other plane and much more beautiful.

Wishitsnows · 23/03/2023 11:24

Yes, you could hear it in Windsor

turkeyboots · 23/03/2023 11:25

I did in school in 1990s in SW Scotland. They did annual training sessions from Glasgow or Prestwick Airports and we'd have a week of booms.

Boopydoo · 23/03/2023 11:30

Yes, every night growing up in Cornwall. I would be in bed reading and it would be my marker that I should be asleep for many years. I miss hearing it.

Custardbanana · 23/03/2023 11:31

I heard it in Bristol once around 2007-2008ish.

I never even knew there was more that one 😳

mamakoukla · 23/03/2023 11:34

Yes

FruityLittleDrink · 23/03/2023 11:35

Used to hear it go over twice a day all my childhood. Not the boom just the general roar. I remember visitors running outside to look at it go over.

Concorde? Last year?

Greenfinch7 · 23/03/2023 11:36

Yes, from a beach near JFK in NYC when I was a child- remember my mother explaining it to me.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 23/03/2023 11:36

Used to see Concorde landing regularly.

Have heard Typhoons going sonic over the coast before, memorably once on a VERY foggy and spooky day walking alone through a deserted coastal nature reserve full of sand dunes and bogs, very atmospheric and felt rather apocalyptic.

shieldmaiden7 · 23/03/2023 11:42

Yes all the time through my childhood. It was a weekly occurrence. I am very very SW Cornwall so as soon as it passed us it was heard. My DH has never heard it though, didn't know it was a thing and he's only a few years younger than me.

daisybrown37 · 23/03/2023 11:45

I haven’t heard a Concorde sonic boom, but did hear a sonic boom in Lincolnshire many years ago. Grew up in the Fens where they used to do test flights from RAF bases.

TheHateIsNotGood · 23/03/2023 11:46

Yes - North Devon in the 90s - it would be shortly followed by all the pheasants kicking off.

Mincepieeyes22 · 23/03/2023 11:47

Yes it had a distinct sound and was quite loud, my Mum always had to turn Corrie up 😂
