Have you ever heard Concorde's sonic boom?

I was watching a random YouTube video and the sonic boom was mentioned and the guy was saying that it couldn't possibly have been Concorde as they didn't go supersonic over land. Which is true, but they did speed up as soon as they were far enough from land for it to be a distant (and therefore quieter) boom. I used to hear it in my childhood when I was on holiday in Kerry. The video was specifically about a place in the west of Newfoundland so I think it's quite likely that they might have heard the boom there.

Anyway, it got me thinking that I'd never thought about how rare it might be to have heard a sonic boom. Where have other people heard it?

Yes - Cornwall at 8pm ish in the 90s

I was little and thought it was God angry that I wasn't asleep yet 😂

I recall it being 8pm and also 9pm with the clock changes. I certainly would have needed to be asleep by 9pm or I'd have been in trouble with my Mum. 😂

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/03/2023 13:08

It was the the only plane that used to rattle the windows apart from the Red Arrows

Oh yes, it did that as well (SW London). Heathrow would regularly be inundated with angry phonecalls when Concorde went over when that happened.

Yes - grew up in West Somerset and used to hear it late afternoon/early evening if I recall correctly. It was many moons ago though!

Me too, we lived in northwest Wiltshire , it was a regular occurrence.

@Boopydoo Oh my goodness. Look at our similar posts!!

Yes, and it's still raining too!

Testarossa44 · 23/03/2023 13:11

Not concord, but the steel works down the road from us caused a sonic boom once, something to do with water mixing with molten metal. Made our windows rattle! We wondered what the hell it was, it made the local news the next day

Cornwallintherain · 23/03/2023 13:11

@Boopydoo bringing back memories of summer and forcing my eyes shut to pretend I was asleep at 9pm! 😂

I believe my brother used to wind me up about it being "God" 😂😂

'that I should be asleep for many years.'

Are you Rip Van Winkle ?

😂 wish I was, I could do with a decent long sleep.

nofilteronme · 23/03/2023 13:13

I grew up in Wiltshire, I remember hearing Concorde fly over, a sound like no other!

TheClash2023 · 23/03/2023 13:13

Yes. My dad flew on the first trip on concord back when I was little

Artemisty · 23/03/2023 13:13

Yes - heard over my school in Norfolk probably around 1995

Alltheprettyseahorses · 23/03/2023 13:15

Yes - living not far from Aintree Racecourse, every year on grand national day.

Ylvamoon · 23/03/2023 13:17

No, but I remember the wird screeching sound during decent into Heathrow... my Uni was right underneath the flight path!

Badger1970 · 23/03/2023 13:18

Yes, living in the south west we were very used to it.

Where we live now, we're on a flightpath for training flights ( raf brize norton) and often hear booms. Sends our dogs batshit and me as I've got very sensitive hearing.

Ichosetheredpill · 23/03/2023 13:20

Used to hear it regularly as a child, we were under the flight path. Was just talking about it with DH the other day.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/03/2023 13:21

We used to hear it in South Wales in the 70s quite regularly

Cupcakequeen75 · 23/03/2023 13:23

We had a sonic boom in the Midlands a couple of weeks ago, a pair of Typhoons were given authority to do so to allow them to intercept a "suspect" plane.
Wasn't just the noise (which was very impressive) but you could almost "feel" it as well (probably not the best description).

mondaytosunday · 23/03/2023 13:23

No but I used to work in Teddington and I'd have to put anyone i was speaking to by phone on hold as it was so loud and our building (very wide, but only four stories) would shake. It was a magnificent sight though.

I aupaired for the family of of the test pilots when I was in my early 20s. It was before I worked for them, not while though.

mummy3today · 23/03/2023 13:41

When I was a child we went on holiday to Devon every year, Concorde used to fly over the local beach and you'd hear the sonic boom as it went over the sea. I actually mentioned to dh recently how weird it is that our kids will probably never hear a sonic boom when it seemed such a normal thing when we were young

Ozgirl75 · 23/03/2023 13:42

Not the boom, but I was at Reading Festival in the early 90s and everyone was very grunge and crusty and then Concorde flew over and all these cool grunge people were like “OMG it’s concorde, how amazing!” literally everyone pointing and staring. It was brilliant.
I flew on Concorde twice and it was so good and an absolute highlight, especially as I was only in my early 20s so lots of people looked at me like “oo who is she?” (Sadly no one important) 😁

SquatBetty · 23/03/2023 14:04

Yes, years ago, living just outside Reading. I think there was a daily Concorde flight that left Heathrow around tea time/early evening so we'd hear it go over each day

Partyandbullshit · 23/03/2023 14:04

So interesting. Those of you who had pets at home who heard the boom: do you think they sensed it before humans did? The way birds etc move to high ground when they sense a tsunami coming?

neitherofthem · 23/03/2023 14:13

We occasionally hear them round here, East Anglia is stiff with RAF bases and if they have a flap on, they tend to drive fast.

soffa · 23/03/2023 14:20

yes, we also run outside when they flew over the house
