Does anyone else prefer a paper diary?

Let me start my saying I’m not the most organised.

I’ve been using a diary on my phone for yonks. It’s ok, electronic reminders are helpful, but things still get missed.

I found a load of old paper appointment diaries recently and realised I really love seeing a week spread over one or two pages, and it gives me a much better sense of the passage of time.

Curious if anyone else is like this? Feeling like a right Luddite.

I love my filofaxes. My A5 "master" diary stays at home and I carry round a smaller one.

This is all very interesting! Glad to know I’m not alone 😃

How do you Filofaxes cope with the size and weight in your bags? Or do you check your diary at home, like @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz does?

It never used to bother me carrying the "personal size" round. These days I hate having a heavy bag. I waver between the mini, which I find too small and fiddly and the pocket although my pocket is a 1990s one and bit chunky. Never satisfied!

Actually what I really loved was my old old pocket one which held a decent amount, but then why back in the 90s (I think) they altered the number of rings and spacing so the present day refills don't fit.

Oh, I absolutely AM a Luddite. I dunno, I've got to that age where I don't WANT to learn anything new, my brain's full! ;-)
I, like a PP, have to have a ring bound diary so it will lie flat & I can see at all times what's on for the next week. I also panic if I can't get a new one well before Christmas. ;-)

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 23/03/2023 17:53

The best bit of the end of the year is when the shops start having their next year's diaries in stock.

I have no interest in all the Christmas tat that appears at the same time but love a good browse to find the best diary.

Why would I want to put things in a boring phone when I can have a beautiful and fully functional diary?

PalmLady · 23/03/2023 17:56

Me 🙋🏻‍♀️ I use a paper wall calendar with sections for each family member. I love it, I couldn't do with a phone diary.

Sloth66 · 23/03/2023 18:33

I’m another one who gets a paper diary and spends an evening just after Christmas with a glass of wine putting in birthdays and reminders.
I like the diaries with seasons, seems to mark the passing of time.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/03/2023 18:34

Yes I still use one. So much quicker and easier than attempting to type it into the phone calendar. Then each Monday you see what you have planned for the week. Perfect.

So many friends laugh at me for this. Losers.

Sceptre86 · 23/03/2023 18:40

I use a paper diary for my work bookings and copy them into my phone too. Often my kids will want to use my phone and the battery dies so it's useful to have my work diary in my bag. I also use a large wall calendar in the kitchen so I can keep track of what we've all for going on in the week. I do like stationary though and enjoy filling in birthdays etc with stickers.

MissMarplesNiece · 23/03/2023 18:42

Paper diary for me too. I use a Personal Planner that is customisable. A couple of years ago I decided that I'd be more up to date and use a planner on my phone but it didn't really work for me so I went back to my paper planner.

viques · 23/03/2023 18:44

I do both, I like the diary on my phone for the alerts, but I also like an A5 week to view diary because I can see very clearly when I am booked, when I am free and what is coming up in the next few days. I can also scribble down notes, addresses , numbers etc because there is more space and I am less likely to transpose letters or digits with my fat fingers.

viques · 23/03/2023 18:48

Paper diary lives at home btw, I don’t carry it around with me like I used to with my work diary. It’s also easier with the paper diary to look back and remember when I did things rather than scroll back on a phone. I keep my paper diaries, I have them going back for years, will probably donate them to a grateful confused nation in my will for future historians to ponder over……….

msbevvy · 23/03/2023 18:51

I always use an 18 month Moleskine pocket diary.

I can't get on with calendars on my phone. The act of writing it on the page of an old school diary seems to help me remember what I am doing.

SkankingWombat · 23/03/2023 18:55

I use an A5 hardback week-to-double-page. I'm self-employed, and it has everything work-related (where I'm working, reminders to do invoices or order materials etc), everything DCs are doing, family stuff like days out/holidays, and DH's stuff that will affect DCs or me. It is a brain dump and extension of my body. I like to have it open on the week when at home, so I can easily glance and see what's happening or where the gaps are. On the rare occasion I put it down somewhere silly, it sends me into a panic! Its sidekick is an A5 hardback notebook that contains all my measurements and workings out for quotes plus various lists for day to day stuff. Together they allow me to function like the adult I'm supposed to be.

Paper diaries will need to be prised out of my cold dead hands. The only way I can ever imagine going digital is if a Tony Stark-style computer projection that can pop up with a thought, and looks and is treated just like a paper diary is invented.

DianasTeacup · 23/03/2023 18:57

Yes definitely, well a paper calendar. I used my phone calendar for a long time but ditched it as it wasn't helping me to remember things it was just doing the remembering for me. The act of writing something down helps to fix it in my memory and now I have no phone reminders, I manage to remember everything and check on my calendar. I think it's progressive not being a luddite 😁

Chateaudiaries · 23/03/2023 19:01

Yes me. A5 size, I need to scribble notes, write lists, special doodles around dc birth dates.

DorisJoy · 23/03/2023 19:04

I was bought a mini size leather Filofax for my 21st. I’m now 51 and couldn’t be without it (even if it is looking a tad battered).

Polas · 23/03/2023 19:12

I want to, but I never stick to it, I've bought many a lovely diary over the years, but about 2 weeks into January it usually gets abondoned in favour of Google calendar 😬

ImNotHereToMakeFriends · 23/03/2023 19:13

I always buy and LOVE paper diaries, they are so beautiful, but find things change so much, I.e. email from school saying it’s not swimming for DD today it’s PE instead, change of plumber coming to service boiler tomorrow now, after school club cancelled etc… the changes are endless that my diary ends up looking a mess, I’ve even used frixon pens to rub out, but the diary still ends up looking messy and the timings are out of order as I’ve had to add things all over the page.

CalmConfident · 23/03/2023 19:16

Red moleskine hardcover pocket diary - been the sane for years, love it

Train007 · 23/03/2023 19:21

Yes I have a paper diary . Have kept all of mine so could look to see what I was doing 23 years ago …love having a good reminisce and I can also see what my babies over 20 years ago were doing and which groups, school plays etc .

WellTidy · 23/03/2023 19:22

We have a a paper kitchen wall calendar. Four columns, plenty of space to write plans. I buy it in M&S (online) every year and it works brilliantly for us.

BrainOnFire · 23/03/2023 19:24

I have to use an online calendar for work (because colleagues send meeting invites etc), but my home diary is a paper one. I have a paper to do list too. It's just not the same having one on my phone!

Train007 · 23/03/2023 19:25

I also have kept a book with lists of all Birthday/ Christmas presents I have bought the kids for the last 29: years ,birthday parties.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 23/03/2023 19:33

Newjumper2023 · 23/03/2023 10:23

I have a paper calendar for this reason. Back up is reminders on my phone but use the calendar everyday and much easier to see what's happening over the week/month.

Yes this is what I do from Boxclever Press.

33goingon64 · 23/03/2023 20:30

Hell yes. Spend far too much time on my phone as it is and love the satisfaction of crossing off when things have passed or been done. I could do with using the alert on my phone to remind me to do things but can't be fagged with entering all the appointments. With my dreadful typing I'd end up putting the wrong date or time anyway.
