Does this sounds like a normal diet?

Cantwaitfordinner · 22/03/2023 17:53

For a woman. Late 30s. Bmi 21.

Breakfast - 40g porridge made with semi skimmed milk and mixed berries

Lunch - 1 wholemeal roll with chicken, salmon/tuna or egg. At weekends a more substantial lunch maybe a cheese toastie, soup and crusty bread, sub roll with salad cured meat and cheese.

Evening meal - Fajitas, spaghetti Bolognese, lasagne, homemade curry, homemade pasta dish, roast. All very normal sized portions for example curry would be 100g of chicken, 75g of rice, half a naan and a ladle of sauce.

A yoghurt for dessert each day either Greek yoghurt with fruit or a muller corner type thing.

Other treats rarely. So crisps, chocolate or a takeaway once a month. No booze.

Would you lose, maintain or gain weight?

I feel like I read this exact same thread yesterday!
I feel like I’d lose on that, I sometimes eat a lot more than that although I don’t eat 3 set meals a day, I do a lot of gym/spinning/running etc so eat a lot to maintain my weight, I’m not looking to lose any!

Pinacalola · 22/03/2023 17:56

It's quite similar to what I eat, and I'm losing weight but have a fairly active lifestyle. Sounds about right, maybe a bit ore fruit or vegetables, and sub out some carbohydrate for more protein. Depends, do you feel satiated?

Cantwaitfordinner · 22/03/2023 17:57

No it was a different thread definitely not mine and the person was eating less than me.

But i did see it and it made me want to ask about my diet and food intake.

Sounds normal and very sensible. As long as the portions were normal, & there wasn’t loads of full fat Mayo and butter on the sandwiches (DM does this!) then depending on activity levels either maintain or lose.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 22/03/2023 17:59

I'd probably maintain on that. It's on the lighter end of normal but I have to eat like a sparrow to lose anything.

You asked exactly this yesterday didn't you? Are you trying to create a diet to lose weight or something? It's a bit of a silly question because wether you lose gain or maintain will depend entirely on

A) the persons height and weight
B) the persons activity level
C) portion sizes
D) cooking method
E) variations of takeaways and booze

Wether YOU lose weight or not will depend on all of the above and ultimatley calories in vs calories out.

Cantwaitfordinner · 22/03/2023 18:04

@Imeldamorning that was 100% not my thread. That person was drinking a bottle of wine at the weekend.

The thread just made me want to ask about my own diet.

The reason I ask is because I'm hungry a lot, by teatime I'm usually ravenous. I only have to look at a takeaway and I put on weight.

I don't actually want or need to lose but would like to be able to maintain and I'm wondering what's normal for others.

Of course I get that there are lots of factors such as activity levels.

randommusings8 · 22/03/2023 18:06

I'm similar age and BMI and i eat a lot more than that (but I am very active both with formal exercise and general life). I don't think it's very much food to be honest, but depends how active you are.

The meals are fairly similar to what I eat, but my porridge portion would be much bigger, lunch has some fruit with it, plus some milky coffees & snacks of fruit/biscuit/nuts/oat bar etc morning & pm.

I'm curious why you're asking though? My appetite/activity/health history/lifestyle could be completely different to yours!

randommusings8 · 22/03/2023 18:08

Sorry posted before I saw your update, i'm not surprised you're hungry, i would be too, hence why I have more snacks & drinks than you

Cantwaitfordinner · 22/03/2023 18:15

@randommusings8 I'm not all that active to be honest. I don't think so at least. I do workout but it's more a walk or an online workout. I do do at least something 4-5 times a week.

What do you class as active?

OP posts:
neitherofthem · 22/03/2023 18:30

All normal, but can I suggest you eat more veg and basic fruit? Do you have salad with your roll at lunchtime? Eat an apple, pear or banana mid-afternoon and that will stave off the hunger pangs until dinner time.

Whendovescry03 · 22/03/2023 18:33

I'm a size 10 with a bmi of 24 and I'd be really hungry late afternoon eating that. My diet is similar but I have a more substantial lunch or snacks in the afternoon to keep myself going. I maintain my weight.

I don't exercise at all though and average about 1,000 to 2,000 steps a day, so maybe I'd lose weight with this diet if I was more active.

Blanketenvy · 22/03/2023 18:34

It seems quite light eating to me. I would definitely lose weight if I ate like that consistently. My meals are similar but with more snacks and alcohol.

Fleur405 · 22/03/2023 18:36

I also have a bmi of 21 and have a desk job. Is be starving if that was all I ate every day!

JennyDarlingRIP · 22/03/2023 18:37

It's the lunch that seems light to me, I'd have something with the sandwich/roll yogurt fruit etc or if not I'd have something like that as a mid afternoon snack

BarbaraofSeville · 22/03/2023 18:38

Eat more and better early in the day if you're starving by tea time. Then you'll probably feel better later on.

You're eating hardly anything, and it's not very substantial so no wonder you're ravenous in the afternoon.

Porridge as a filling breakfast has to be the biggest food lie going.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 22/03/2023 18:39

I'd need to eat more than that. Especially more fat and protein at breakfast and lunch, and lots more veg

WashableVelvet · 22/03/2023 18:39

I’m the same BMI and age and would lose weight on that. Or rather, I’d be ravenous by 4pm, then eat sweet rubbish and white carbs to fill me up, and end up gaining weight.

I eat similar to you but plus quite a lot more veg and protein (lots of lentils and beans which are also good for fibre, lots of eggs, only slightly more meat etc) than you and full fat milk etc, and seem to maintain my BMI. I exercise once or twice a week.

Of course I get that there are lots of factors such as activity levels.

I'd be really hungry having a breakfast with so little protein and then a small lunch.

I'm 5'5 and eat typically:

Breakfast: slice of toast with avo and egg, or greek yogurt with nuts and fruit, or porridge with fruit and nut butter for more protein and fats

Lunch: toastie or sandwich, sometimes salad or soup, usually have fruit after

Dinner: similar to you but often my plate is half veg/salad and half whatever meal, I don't restrict and happily have pasta etc. Usually fruit after

Weekends might include a pudding or pastry for breakfast, drink maybe once a month

I'm losing weight eating this way but somewhat active. Never hungry, if anything sometimes too full.

During the week my sweet treats are limited to dried fruit like dates or mango. I still lost weight when eating more crap but felt really unwell, extreme blood sugar spikes made it very hard to have consistent energy. So eat probably the same amount just feel better

JorisBonson · 22/03/2023 18:44

I was hungry just reading that.

Porridge can be super filling! I do whole milk, nut butter and fresh fruit and it keeps me satiated for ages.

If I just had plain porridge I'd be starving though

Alltheproductsnoidea · 22/03/2023 19:04

That sounds a massive amount to me. But I have an eating disorder. So not sure what you want from this thread 🤷

MrNook · 22/03/2023 19:11

The competitive under eaters will be on in a minute to tell you it's absolutely loads of food but it sounds like a normal amount to me although if it was me I'd have a snack too

Cantwaitfordinner · 22/03/2023 19:31

Thanks all.

So with my porridge I do have blueberries, strawberries and raspberries or a sliced banana.

With my lunch I'll usually have a bit of salad on my sandwich or cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce.

I didn't say I do sometimes have a snack either a handful of nuts, a couple of crackers with peanut butter, a banana, an orange or a crumpet with cream cheese. Does not make one bit of difference to me feeling hungry though.

Perhaps I'll try mixing up my breakfasts a bit.

Im usually ok until about 4 o'clock when I am crazy hungry.

soffa · 22/03/2023 19:35

I would lose weight on that day in day out. Portions are quite small for me
