What are the best foods to eat if you feel totally exhausted & run down?

I'm thinking of making liver & onions. I can't believe how exhausted I'm feeling at the moment. I want my zing back. Any other foods I should be thinking of?

protein and fresh green veg

Hazelnuttella · 22/03/2023 14:43

Might be worth asking your GP to test your iron levels?

Vitamin C helps with iron absorption, so have a satsuma before the Liver.

motherofkevinnotperry · 22/03/2023 14:44

Cut down on sugar and carbs and start to include whole nuts, seeds, greens, good proteins and plenty of water.

CalistoNoSolo · 22/03/2023 14:47

Greens like kale, spinach, spring cabbage. Plenty of water (I feel dreadful and have no energy if I get dehydrated). Vit D and iron supplements. Exercise and sleep.

Cherrysoup · 22/03/2023 15:48

Protein and take a decent A-Z vitamin (double dose). I echo iron level check. I’m on daily IV antibiotics and there’s a girl on an iron infusion drip. She looks and acts exhausted.

GoodVibesHere · 22/03/2023 17:22

Good old beans on toast for protein and iron

Soups, especially lentil

nilsmousehammer · 22/03/2023 17:27

Well done with the liver. I ended up chugging really stupid amounts of fruit, vegetable soups and salmon after Covid when I couldn't get any energy back. It did help.

I get a horrible cold sore type thing at the side of my mouth when I'm run down (angular chelitis or something) and a nicely cooked steak is my go to.

ShandaLear · 22/03/2023 17:35

Steak, dark green vegetables like kale and spring greens, milk.

GuyFawkesDay · 22/03/2023 17:36

I like chicken and veg soup. Quick was to shove in plenty of good stuff and is a bit soul soothing too, which is half the battle sometimes.

mackthepony · 22/03/2023 17:37

Water

Loads of natural protein

Tons of vegetables

Broth, preferably homemade

ThreeRingCircus · 22/03/2023 17:42

My go to is something warm with loads of veg that feels both comforting and nourishing. I felt rotten yesterday and had lentil, chickpea and spinach daal and a naan bread (I'd have had brown rice if I'd been feeling up to it but couldn't be bothered.) I think it being warm, spiced and able to be eaten with a spoon just made me feel better.

It's worth getting your bloods checked. When I was feeling dreadful I saw the GP and turned out I was deficient in vitamin D.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 22/03/2023 17:52

Nothing to add unfortunately as I'm in a similar boat. Following for tips as I'm yawning all day and just feel lousy.

LadyKenya · 22/03/2023 17:56

Getting over a virus recently, I was really craving plain foods, such as a piece of cod/ haddock, with steamed potatoes, and peas. I just listen to what my body wants, when I feel like that. I also was having vegetable soups.

Try a probiotic as well - Bio Kult Advanced Multi-Strain is a good one, available from Boots, Amazon, etc and reasonably priced. Consider taking magnesium to help with sleep too.

NoSquirrels · 22/03/2023 18:08

Anything someone else lovingly preps and serves you. Hopefully there’s someone who can do that? Flowers

Fluffodils · 22/03/2023 18:09

Veggie Stews

Stir fry

Glass of orange juice

Loooots of water

Double dosing is a stupid and unsafe idea.

YogaLite · 22/03/2023 18:32

Vit D (but don't double dose vitamins)

Belledan1 · 22/03/2023 18:45

Make a nice cottage pie with less mince and more veg with it. . Mix leeks, swede, carrots with a bit of mash for the top. Getting all the vitamins you need and it's comforting..

Lovestodrinkmilk · 22/03/2023 18:55

Unless someone else is doing the cooking, a ready meal, some fruit and a multivitamin.

Twillow · 22/03/2023 18:57

Ditto proteins and veg - can be really simple like air-fried or steamed broccoli and salmon.

If you're going down the probiotic route, make sure you eat some prebiotic foods too for peak efficacy
