Clothes smell sweaty after washing

One of my children's clothes are still smelling of sweat after being washed! They wear Deodorant, how can I get this smell out of their clothes?

Thanks

If you're using bio laundry detergent 60° is too hot. Anything hotter than 40° and the enzymes are rendered ineffective.

TheFTrain · 20/03/2023 17:54

If it's from the underarms...

Spilt an Ariel pod open (the one with stain remover) and mix it together. Wet the underarms and spread the liquid over the area. 1 pod will do a few shirts / t shirts. Let it soak for about 15 mins then wash in the machine on the highest setting you can.

Another vote for Halo. Also Persil bio with the 7 day fresh sign.

Change in shower gel, either solid bars or Lush shower jelly made a huge difference.

Bio washing detergent

Nowillpowerarall · 20/03/2023 18:32

What's the halo stuff?

What's the halo stuff?

Its a sports wash liquid
I have only seen it in sainsbury's and as I have no local one I don't buy it often

I washed stuff at 30 when in care, not hot enough to remove odours 40 fixed it

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/03/2023 18:59

You can buy Halo Sports Wash on Amazon. But you can also get sweaty smell out of armpits by turning the top inside out, wetting the armpit area with cold water, rubbing in Dettol anti-bacterial bar soap or anti-bac washing up liquid on the armpits and then washing at 40 deg with bio washing powder. And not tumble drying because the heat from the dryer "sets" the smell in.

Thank you, taken with kindness! She's nearly 16 and does shower daily, sometimes twice a day!

It’s also worth reminding teenagers to wash the full length of underarms- not just a quick soap of the tops of pits.

CasparBloomberg · 20/03/2023 19:13

Another vote for Dettol Laundry Cleanser. I use only a small proportion of the recommended amount and it sorted out lots of stinky school uniform and sportswear that never smelled clean. Never had a problem since. Even works when using cold water and handwashing too. Amazing stuff.

KatherineJaneway · 20/03/2023 19:32

Like pp I recommend Dettol Laundry Cleanser. Put some neat on the affected area and wait a boy. It really helps.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 20/03/2023 19:45

I find using fabric conditioner stops my tops getting clean and meaning they smell still after washing, I've stopped using it and the problem has gone away

paulmccartneysbagel · 20/03/2023 19:49

Napisan in with your usual detergent!

Nowillpowerarall · 20/03/2023 20:06

I don't actually use fabric conditioner, never have!

Not sure if it has been said, but I read on here a while ago, if you get some antibac hand wash, give the arm pits a quick scrub then wash as normal that will sort it.

It really really does. My dp has a manual job. Honestly, it works

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/03/2023 20:17

Get her to use bar soap for her armpits, it's much more effective than shower gel. I've got a stinky 12 year old boy and have found laundry cleanser is the most effective things for his sweaty clothes. It works well even on low temperature washes.

Tronkmanton · 20/03/2023 20:22

Just spray white vinegar onto the underarms before chucking in the wash. Gets rid of sweat smell.

bizzywiththefizzy · 20/03/2023 20:23

I would also recommend a vinegar rinse in your machine instead of fabric softener in your drawer . Much cheaper than putting Dettol in there .

nats2010 · 20/03/2023 20:27

My daughters tops were like that. Man it was enough to make you gag the smell of it!! I kept her clothes separate, scrubbed the armpits with a scrub daddy and some fairy liquid and then used the dettol that others are mentioning in with my wash powder. It really worked for me. I was ready for throwing out sooooo many clothes because of it. The smell is vile. Good luck OP.

3WildOnes · 20/03/2023 20:28

Dettol laundry cleanser completely solved this problem for me.

Do you use biological powder? That's the best thing imo.

We have to use non bio, because both me and daughter get horrendous eczema from bio powders.

Gremlins101 · 20/03/2023 20:33

Does your washing machine need some tlc? Experienced that with mine.

...if bad soak in vinegar and bicarbonate soda

You'd need to gibe the clothes a really good rinse out after vinegar and before bicarb. Vinegar is acidic and bicarb is basic (alkaline) and they simply react to neutralise each other, mixing the two for an effective cleaner is a myth.

kids.britannica.com/students/assembly/view/233555#:~:text=Mixing%20baking%20soda%20(sodium%20bicarbonate,well%20as%20carbon%20dioxide%20gas.

Mixing baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) causes a chemical reaction that produces a salt (sodium acetate) and water, as well as carbon dioxide gas.

wantmorenow · 20/03/2023 20:42

If they are white shirts then I recommend napisan too. Only thing that gets my daughters McDs shirts clean and smelling great after all the oil smells from work.
