I can't believe the French have been retiring at 62 thus far.

Seriously, the 64 years Macron wants to put the retirement age up to would be like a dream to me! Wonder how much their pension is?

It’ll all be fine when we’re dead. Another 20 years and most of us will be gone.

this doesn't make any sense..

Yes it does. I’m a boomer.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/03/2023 14:30

Well no it doesn;t. The younger boomers are in their late fifties - so a good number of them will still be alive in twenty years time.

Blossomtoes · 23/03/2023 14:34

The youngest boomers are 59 this year, the oldest 78. The vast majority of us will be off your hands in 20 years time when presumably you’ll be reviling Gen Y.

You said it will all be fine though? Look at the state of the economy, social care & NHS now. You think they will be in better shape in 20 yrs time?

I don’t care, darling, I’ll be dead.

Definitely a boomer 😂

Dead & stupid, aiming high!

Hardly aiming anywhere - death’s an inevitability not a goal. Didn’t you know that?

soffa · 23/03/2023 15:30

Another excellent contribution....

You're not dead yet so why not get a life?

Zilla1 · 23/03/2023 15:52

FWIW, economically the notion of this being state funded, tax-based and so on isn't really meaningful though the 'burden' on younger workers is more so.

beguilingeyes · 23/03/2023 16:29

I was born in 1961, so I'm a Boomer. I had no choice when or where I was born. I left school at 18 and have worked ever since.
I know that I'm party of the luckiest generation, but what am I supposed to do about it? Bitching about Boomers might make you feel better but 50 years of (mostly) Tory governments have done this..not me...and no, I've never voted for them.

This is the most stereotype confirming comment ever. You have no idea how perfect your comment is. Gen X is so invisible you forgot we even exist

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/03/2023 17:44

Ha Ha!

Also no one is bitching about boomers, just recognising the reality. Such a large bulge is always going to cause distruption. In the sixties and seventies havign such a large young generation was amazing for pop music, protest culture etc.. Unfortunately now having such a large older and increasingy infirm generation means society has to pick up the tab, but unfortunately the intergenerational payment method is not up to the challenge.

You’re right - senility is obviously upon me. I can’t forget you exist, I gave birth to one of you!

Buckle up because in a couple of decades you’ll be reviled because a lot of you will inherit the hated boomers’ assets.

That’s what a richer country actually looks like, people: less work for better services and a better standard of living.

Britain is being turned back into the amazingly wonderful Victorian Age, as per the age old Tory wet dream.

very few countries in Europe have the same level of inequality that we have. That's one of the big issues, also the ageing population tikebonb.

I think th Uk is a complete outlier in this.

FullaSpjäll · 24/03/2023 17:59

Triangle "I think the real question is, why do people in the UK put up with things being so awful here...".

I think the real question is why the British are surprised: many western European and Scandinavian countries happily pay higher taxes in order to secure a more comfortable, earlier retirement. Here, we resent the 'tax burden' instead of regarding it as a golden opportunity to collectively create the society we would like.
I for one would love to pay quite a bit more tax in order to ensure better health care, child care, education, and geriatric care.

lljkk · 24/03/2023 18:45

Voilà, I give you zum French potholes. Last week.

i believe the Chinese all retire around age 62, too. They smoke themselves into early graves, though.

I can't believe the French have been retiring at 62 thus far.
Zilla1 · 25/03/2023 15:01

It used to involve an unrealistic expectation of Western European public services with USA taxation. Over time, the UK will achieve USA public services with Western European taxation.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/03/2023 08:51

A lot of France's often cited great workplace protections tend to preference older male workers in certain sectors.
