Cool stuff to do in London

I have a weekend in London planned. Me and 17yo dd. We have some plans already but I'm looking for suggestions of fun stuff that we could do in either a morning or afternoon. We are both very open minded as to what we might do, but would like to do something a bit different from what we've done on previous visits - so none of the big, obvious museums or attractions.

We'll already be in East London at one point during the weekend, so bonus points for anything fun that we could do around there, especially late afternoon or evening.

We'll also be around Marylebone at another point during the weekend, so any ideas around there would be great.

But open to all suggestions, especially any quirky ideas that we might not have considered.

Thank you!

My daughter used to like going to Camden when she was that age, but I'm not sure exactly what she did there!

Oooh following as I'm doing a few nights away in London with a friend in September and we like to do different things :)

One I've found - Thames Rockets. Speedboat trips along the Thames.

The novelty automaton museum is great fun! novelty-automation.com/

Came on to start the same post. Have tomorrow and half day Saturday in London. Just me and DH. Have been multiple times so obvious things done already. All ideas welcome

David Hockney at the Lightroom: beautiful...

PicpoulDeMeNay · 16/03/2023 20:00

DD and I love Barbican Conservatory last year - she was 17 or 18 at the time. Quirky different - you do need to book a time slot though

I laughed earlier today because dd mentioned wanting to go to Camden Market. My friends and I were obsessed with it at the same age!Grin

Some great suggestions here, thank you.

Barbican conservatory sounds right up my street so will definitely check that out. The David Hockney thing is weirdly appealing too!

Came on to say David Hockney at the Lightroom. It is stunning, though pricey. Coal Drops Yard is very cool for a wander/lunch.

SomeMonstersEatTelly · 16/03/2023 20:05

You could walk along the canal to Camden from the Hockney, too.

Ooh, that sounds perfect. Have just googled and the Lightroom isn't far from where we're staying so that might work well.

Can anyone advise on how long we would need to allow for the Lightroom?

Barbican conservatory looks great but difficult to get tickets at the time we want. Will definitely save that idea for another trip!

Book the sky garden, it's free and offers great views

latetothefisting · 16/03/2023 20:15

Time out is great for lists of things to do in London- current art exhibitions etc.

www.timeout.com/london/things-to-do/101-things-to-do-in-london

Highfield cemetery tour (or any of the victorian cemeteries)

Silver vaults is completely different to anywhere else I've ever been!

Either the sky garden/120 fenchurch Street or 1 new change for free skyline views -all very close together and St Paul's, postman's Park(for the memorials of heroic deaths) and the London mithraneum (if you like roman stuff), leadenhall Market (for HP fans) are all nearby too

Emirates airline or as pp has suggested a boat trip for a different view of the city

Battersea power station has been renovated and has a high lift thing for good views

One of the less famous museums -museum of youth culture/foundling museum/wellcome collection/museum of brands/the clink/old operating theatre etc.

One of the secret underground tours (might be too late to book these?)

Mudlarking on the Thames!

Gods own junkyard

Depends on what you like really!

War of the worlds immersive experience?

OldMrsTiggyWinkle · 16/03/2023 20:17

arcelormittalorbit.com - go down the massive slide at the Olympic Park!! It's brilliant.

If you're in east London look up Columbia Road flower market - it's on on a Sunday morning. So lovely and a great street with good shops etc.

OldMrsTiggyWinkle · 16/03/2023 20:21

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves you can get the lift and she can brave the slide Wink

Bells3032 · 16/03/2023 20:22

We did the gunpowder plot experience near the tower of London the other day and it was great.

There's also stuff like the crystal maze or tomb raider experience (which is in Camden).

This looks interesting. Was featured on Click last weekend twistmuseum.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjw_MqgBhAGEiwAnYOAenAv7z2L-Jv4M2Z3-73LAFPUwSzn2HdMBcM1T4DDeuxIaJ10A77-2xoCXbkQAvD_BwE

I don’t know if you’ve made food plans, but I would recommend a Brick Lane curry one evening.
