Cool stuff to do in London

I have a weekend in London planned. Me and 17yo dd. We have some plans already but I'm looking for suggestions of fun stuff that we could do in either a morning or afternoon. We are both very open minded as to what we might do, but would like to do something a bit different from what we've done on previous visits - so none of the big, obvious museums or attractions.

We'll already be in East London at one point during the weekend, so bonus points for anything fun that we could do around there, especially late afternoon or evening.

We'll also be around Marylebone at another point during the weekend, so any ideas around there would be great.

But open to all suggestions, especially any quirky ideas that we might not have considered.

Thank you!

I don’t know if you’ve made food plans, but I would recommend a Brick Lane curry one evening.

That sounds like a great plan! Any specific recommendations?

I think I'm going to have to plan another weekend in London to do all of these!

Just passed a bar where you can get pizza and throw axes at targets, on the Marylebone side of Oxford Circus. Not sure if that appeals...!

There are some good ghost walks in the City which can be quiet and creepy at night (well, for London)

gemandjule · 16/03/2023 20:29

Brilliant. Have booked David Hockney. I had already looked at the sky garden but it's booked out for my dates

Walking over the top of the O2, if you have a head for heights!

Check to see if Tower Bridge will be raised whilst you are there.

Are there any you would recommend, FuriousFurious? I have looked into this before, but got a bit overwhelmed at the amount of choice!

re. Brick Lane …. I like Monsoon and have been about half a dozen times.

BarrelOfOtters · 16/03/2023 20:36

I love tayaabs for a curry.

walk ups at the sky garden are usually fairly easy.

I absolutely love the sir John shames museum and the welcome foundation…

Book the sky garden, it's free and offers great views

Yes, I agree with this. You do need to book ahead though.

God's Own Junkyard. Highly instagrammable.

Chippy1234 · 16/03/2023 20:53

London Walks do 2 hour walking tours. We did Hidden Kensington and Borough Market. I used to live in London and I learnt loads!

Duchessofmuchness · 16/03/2023 20:56

Brick lane is also great for the graffiti too - you can book tours or find blogs and info on line to sept guide.

Life size monopoly is near Tottenham Court Road so might be too west for you? Rug class at tufting (too south maybe?) Walk over the top of the 02? Afternoon tea on a double decker bus.

I'm going to stay with a friend near borough market in mid May; which markets are good for affordable vintage / collectibles / antiques eg is Camden Market ok?

ArianahX · 16/03/2023 21:57

I haven't been to London for over 12 years!! And that was just Covent Garden for a day.

I think Camden Market is tosh, personally. Full of tat.

I’d go to Camden Passage in Angel which is much nicer or brave Portobello early on a Friday.

I took kids here on a day out in Soho recently. You don't really need to be a Fantastic Beasts/Potter fan to enjoy it. Doesn't take ages to look round but puts you near lots of other cool stuff, amazing bakeries, food etc minalima.com/visit-us/. And while you're in the area, finding the Noses of Soho is good fun on a nice day if you're just moseying around lookup.london/seven-noses-of-soho/.

ArianahX · 16/03/2023 22:27

Thanks @SomeMonstersEatTelly

FuriousFurious · 16/03/2023 22:57

I've done London Walks Ghosts of the Old City and London Ghost Walk the old city ghost walk. Both were really good.

coffeeginandkindness · 16/03/2023 23:06

The breakfast club caf for some food

JL642 · 16/03/2023 23:28

Agree with sky garden - free although tickets can be tricky to book! Alternatively we’ve been up there by booking breakfast. Prices actually quite reasonable!!

Also agree with Brick Lane curry if you’re East!!

Theres the Stratford Westfield too if you wanted to shop east and didn’t fancy Oxford Street and / or wanted to see the Olympic Park.
