I popped into a Co-op to buy coffee and washing up liquid, both were so expensive I left empty handed!

Friedonyourfarmstonight · 17/03/2023 08:24

That's too expensive. I wouldn't buy it at that price.

I get different brands depending on what’s on offer. I also find the Lidl fake version fine

Here in Ireland 200g of Nescafe Gold Blend is €6.99 at Tesco.

Teatime55 · 17/03/2023 08:37

Co-op is ridiculous for pricing. If you look at the trolley website you can find the cheapest supermarkets for it.

Soakitup37 · 17/03/2023 08:46

In london, wouldn’t pay that, something is always on offer so I go with something I’m willing to drink and buy a few on a deal. At that price if nothing was available cheaper I’d just ditch it. I’ve got a coffee machine which is getting used less and less. Think it’s time to go back to the ground coffee till this blows over.

it’s gonna blow over right???

BellePeppa · 17/03/2023 09:16

I recently bought a jar of instant coffee (I can’t drink the fancier stuff) from Lidl for £1.99 and it was really nice, very smooth as opposed to some really rough ones (like Kenco). Probably the nicest instant (to me) and I’ve often bought the one OP pictured (but only when on special offer).

HurryShadow · 17/03/2023 09:19

I just looked it up on Ocado. It's not exactly known for being the cheapest but this particular tub of coffee is usually priced at £6.50 but is currently £3.50 on offer!

MadeForThis · 17/03/2023 09:26

Bulk buy on Amazon.

Drakmo · 17/03/2023 09:32

Agree that Co-Op is a massive rip-off and has been for ages but coffee is a terrible price rn. So much so that I've started buying mine from a local company that roasts their beans fresh several times a week. It's £5 - £6.50 a pack which is not much more than bloody Sainsbury's and Morrisons etc are charging for a pack of much less nice stuff. I figured if I'm going to be paying more anyway I might as well pay more for a decent product. They even grind the beans for you while you wait, with the fineness to suit your brewing method.

For anyone else who uses ground rather than instant, do check if there's anyone near you doing similar.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2023 09:35

Co-op is a total rip off. Stuff like cold meat is SO expensive

Drakmo · 17/03/2023 09:50

They're not very nice to work for either. One of the first supermarkets to adopt the short hours contract employment model for their staff.

Their fresh meat though whilst as expensive as everything else they sell is good quality.

M&S is cheapest overall for basics these days ime - some things you can get cheaper in one shop or another but to get everything together m&s is pretty good. You just have to make sure that various deli counter luxuries don't accidentally fall into your trolley.

pointythings · 17/03/2023 10:58

Wow, that's shocking. Makes me feel quite pleased about my filter coffee habit though - I only have one big mug a day and even though I buy posho fairtrade stuff it's better value than the instant right now.

GoldenFarfalle · 17/03/2023 11:04

I'm paying almost 9 pounds for nescafe but I can't live without coffee.

CocoPlum · 17/03/2023 11:08

The Aldi fake version of this is around £2.50 a tin. It's gone up by about 50p but still a saving!

Streamside · 17/03/2023 11:12

Lidl do a large gold blend type coffee at £2.39 for a large jar.I shop for an elderly friend and have replaced his gold blend which he'd been paying almost £10 for.
Weird times at present and everyone needs to have a fair idea of prices, also when you just wouldn't pay a premium.
