Sore hip, ache all over and very tired. What is going on?

I want to say up front that I have a GP appointment next week so i am going to get checked out but it is safe to say i am panicking slightly and i am not a generally anxious person.

My right hip started to get sore about 4-6 weeks go. A deep aching pain which is now radiating down my leg. It is not sciatic pain.

I am also very exhausted and feel like i am swimming through treacle. And I ache all over.

I am aged 60 and admit i am over weight which cannot be helping the hip issue.

Can anyone help me try and work out what is going on so i can marshal my thoughts and express myself articulately when i go to the doctor? I am happy to answer any further questions. Thanks.

To add i have arthritis but it isn't generally bothersome. I have Naproxen which i used to take as and when but now i am having to take it twice a day and paracetamol on top,

Show the Dr what you wrote here, I think it describes how you feel perfectly!

Could be arthritis spreading?

Could be arthritis spreading?

Indeed i suspect it is, but i don't know why i feel so tired and unwell at the same time.

Because you're derbies from the pain

ApolloandDaphne · 16/03/2023 18:55

Derbies?

You could have a vitamin deficiency or be anaemic. Vitamin D deficiency can really make you sore and tired.

That's a good shout. That would be easy to sort out with supplements i assume?

Op, I'm the same and I'm 47. Feel rotten.

Mabelface · 16/03/2023 19:08

Yes. It took a couple of months to get properly better, but they worked. I also had brain fog and anxiety from it. If it is the vitamin d, the gp will prescribe a high dosage supplement.

mindutopia · 16/03/2023 19:19

You could have a vitamin d deficiency. I was exhausted and ached all over when I did. The hip and leg itself could just be a dodgy muscle/joint issue.

I’m early 40s and have the same, starts from right SI joint, through hip, down leg sometimes. It’s just because I have a bad lower back. I see an osteopath 3x a year and she sorts it out.

ellerman · 16/03/2023 19:21

I came on to say Vit D deficiency too.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2023 20:05

I felt like I was swimming through treacle when I was anaemia. I think those are the exact words I used to my gp.

Could the hip and the fatigue be separate issues?

ApolloandDaphne · 16/03/2023 20:07

Yes they could be unrelated.

I spoke to a doctor last week about aches and she said they have a tonne of people coming in saying they are aching head to toe and it's always vitamin d. Easy to confirm with a blood test and then treat with supplements

ApolloandDaphne · 31/03/2023 08:47

I have a bit of an update if anyone can help me further. I have been to the GP and had blood tests done

The hip pain is likely due to my arthritis but I am too young for any discussion of hip replacement (60). I am using painkillers and exercises to help with this.

My blood tests all came back normal. I don't know what was tested for but I am going to collect a copy of the results today. I have been taking Vit D, magnesium, B complex and Vit C. I am still exhausted with brain fog.

Can anyone give me suggestions for my next steps? The surgery are happy for me to have another appointment if I want one.

What dose vitamin D are you taking?

20 micrograms. Is that not enough?

pncr · 31/03/2023 09:34

Ask the gp about greater trochanteric pain syndrome.

coffeemoon · 31/03/2023 09:37

What's your lifestyle like OP?

Do you exercise, do you spend a lot of time sitting during the day, are you drinking enough water, how's your caffeine intake and how's your diet generally?

I know you'll have heard it a million times, but looking at these things really can do some way to sorting out a lot of niggles, aches and pains and even can help with arthritic pain too.

It's the first thing that doctors and physios will usually recommend if you present with these sorts of pains.

coffeemoon · 31/03/2023 09:40

ApolloandDaphne · 31/03/2023 09:33

20 micrograms. Is that not enough?

That's perfect - don't take more unless your doctor tells you to. It is possible to overdose on vitamin D.

Rubyupbeat · 31/03/2023 09:46

It does sound like arthritic pain, although we are all different. You will know once you have a xray.

The pain is arthritic. I'm not in any doubt about that. If it was just the hip pain I could manage. It's the tiredness and brain fog i am struggling with most.

OP posts:
thesugarbumfairy · 31/03/2023 09:48

Sorry you are feeling rubbish op.
are they going to xray your hip? 60 is not too young to discuss hip replacement. Age isn't an indicator - the state of your hip is - I am 48 and have had one.

(Although sadly x-rays don't always show up everything - mine was normal so I had to go private and get an MRI which showed a whole host of issues)

Velvian · 31/03/2023 10:09

I would recommend getting your kidney function checked, just to be safe. I know 2 people with kidney problems that have hip pain associated.
