Sore hip, ache all over and very tired. What is going on?

I want to say up front that I have a GP appointment next week so i am going to get checked out but it is safe to say i am panicking slightly and i am not a generally anxious person.

My right hip started to get sore about 4-6 weeks go. A deep aching pain which is now radiating down my leg. It is not sciatic pain.

I am also very exhausted and feel like i am swimming through treacle. And I ache all over.

I am aged 60 and admit i am over weight which cannot be helping the hip issue.

Can anyone help me try and work out what is going on so i can marshal my thoughts and express myself articulately when i go to the doctor? I am happy to answer any further questions. Thanks.

This is exactly how my RA started.

The treacle analogy is exactly the same as the way I described how I felt to my GP when I went. Ditto the pain in my hip.

I hope you get answers soon OP and that's it's something easily treatable 💐

You have to ask for vitamin D to be measured as it is not a routine blood.
Ask for B12, folate and ferritin at the same time as they are also not routine.

kidney function is routine, so no need to ask for that as it will have been done.

60 is not too young for hip replacement, I had both mine before 60, it all depends what stage it isz at. one look at my x rays, and they were sharpening the knife.

I had covid really badly around Christmas. My bones really ached, and any little niggle I had had beforehand ached x 1000. I was also exhausted and slept for Britain. No other symptoms except a temp for a while.

could it be this?

I found magnesium and b6 helped with brain fog

How is your life now that you've had them done compared to before? How long did you have to wait to get them done?

Sorry you are feeling rubbish op.
are they going to xray your hip? 60 is not too young to discuss hip replacement. Age isn't an indicator - the state of your hip is - I am 48 and have had one.

(Although sadly x-rays don't always show up everything - mine was normal so I had to go private and get an MRI which showed a whole host of issues)

I may look at a private referral. I have a health assessment soon through my DHs private work health insurance. I can discuss it with them. They expedited my DH to have an MRI scan for a possible prostate issue so they may be able to get a scan or x Ray of my hip done fairly quickly.

As far as I am aware I haven't had Covid again since I had it a year ago.

What treatment did you receive for this?

What treatment did you receive for this?

I inject methotrexate weekly and have steroid injections as and when I need them, up to three times a year. Also codeine for the pain (I can't take NSAIDS like ibuprofen even though they're antiinflammatories and better for RA pain). I will be on the MTX for the rest of my life. It works by calming the immune system which hopefully slows the progres of the disease. I still have bad days (I'm mid flare at the moment) but hopefully the drugs mean that long term the damage to my joints will be less. It doesn't help with the fatigue my much sadly.

I'm seronegative so it didn't show up in blood tests - I had scans/MRIs to confirm it.

maddy68 · 31/03/2023 11:19

Sounds like bursitis take anti inflammatory

Ishouldbeoutside · 31/03/2023 11:49

I feel exactly the same. My GP won’t test for vit D deficiency as they just say everyone is deficient. Helpful eh?

To be fair it's easy and cheap to buy Vit D tablets.

I had similar and it was an autoimmune disease (scleroderma in my case) but could also be rheumatoid arthritis. You can request autoimmune blood tests from gp which should rule it in or out

This isn't true - not all AI diseases show up in blood tests. My RA is seronegative.

A GP who suspects something like RA is going on will refer to a rheumatologist - GPs can't make a diagnosis. If blood tests are clear then other ways of diagnosing include MRI and ultrasound scans.

With regards to your hip pain, it might be helped by loosening/ stretching your quad muscles. I've had similar issue due to menopause and quad stretches really help.

The versus arthritis website is good. Have a look at move with Leon www.versusarthritis.org/about-arthritis/exercising-with-arthritis/lets-move-with-leon/

Thank you. I will look at that. I have tried to find exercises that would be good as I am aware strengthening my gluts would be beneficial.

TempNCforthis How is your life now that you've had them done compared to before? How long did you have to wait to get them done?

I waited about 6 months from the x-ray for the first, then asked for the next one after about a year and waited perhaps another 6. It was well worth it, even having just the first one done was a vast improvement, so I was happy to wait a bit for the second one.

This was before Covid and waiting lists are ever growing, so I recommend anyone who suspects they need it done, to get onto the list asap. The longer it is left, the more your general health suffers from pain, lack of sleep, and inability to exercise, which makes the recovery slower.

I think it took about 4 months to feel "normal" after each op, I was up and about in days, and walking without crutches after a few weeks.

TempNCforthis · 31/03/2023 16:19

Thank you very much @Choccyp1g.

Do you know your ferritin level? When mine gets low I get achy hips, knees and legs. You can be on the lower end of the normal range and still feel rough.
