What do you do on rainy days?

Cornwallintherain · 16/03/2023 15:35

Just that really. Looking out the window. It's my day off and we've had rain ALL day and all day yesterday too.

I've really suffered with SAD this Winter and last Winter. I need to prepare in advanced for Winter 2023.

But what do you do on gloomy rainy days / weekends? With or without kids.

We don't have a lot of indoor things in Cornwall and there's only so many times you can visit Eden and the Museum.

I have baked a cake and went out for a rainy run. Its so dreary.

Prepare yourself for lots of chipper “we just put on our waterproofs and go out puddle jumping!” type replies.

Not from me, I hate going out in the rain.

Usually the DC create a den, make something, do some indoor gymnastics/dancing and ask repeatedly when they can watch tv. Meanwhile DH and I get jobs done.

Sometimes we have friends round, although this goes a lot better when there’s a dry spell and we can send the kids out in the garden.

birdshavingabath · 16/03/2023 15:42

can you get a 10,000 lux daylight lamp? they are really helpful for the darkest months.

Meandfour · 16/03/2023 15:44

With DC - baking, Lego, craft, painting, hammer beads, watch a film, go swimming, trampoline park, bowling, cinema, playcentre, ice skating, ninja warrior, inflatables park, climbing walls.
We are lucky to have lots of indoor activities near us.

sixfoot · 16/03/2023 15:45

Movie, read, bake, yoga.

Cornwallintherain · 16/03/2023 15:45

@minipie omg I didn't prepare for those replies!! I have MS and I run whenever I can so hopefully I won't get told to get off my arse and walk in the rain. Sometimes I just can't do it (and sometimes I can happily run 5km!)

I just find it so relentless and gloomy!

@birdshavingabath what an amazing idea. I'm Googling now. Thank you

Ice skating sounds fun. So does an inflatable park and ninja warrior. We have none of these! Jealous x

Read escape fiction
Indulge in gentle TV
Do the niggle jobs that I don't want to do when it's dry or warm, like small hand sewing repairs, pairing up shoes, rearranging the freezer/fridge, bit of shelf decluttering.

Cook something spicy so it at least smells of hotter days far away.

Get the harder used footbath out, have a facial, face pack, four lotion.

frozendaisy · 16/03/2023 15:48

With kids, jigsaws, create a comic type drawing, play with their toys, teddy bears tea party

MeinKraft · 16/03/2023 15:50

Look out the window and think, thank goodness I don't have to go out in that.

flutterbyebaby · 16/03/2023 15:52

Gosh I so miss my kids being little and going out to jump in puddles.

Minieggbrownies · 16/03/2023 15:54

I think part of the problem is that you're in Cornwall. As beautiful as it is and as much as I love it, there isn't much entertainment in the rain.

Here we would go to the indoor shopping mall for a browse and a coffee, trampolining, soft play, bowling, cinema, indoor golf, swimming. I'm in a big city so we have a vast choice of all these things nearby.

Otherwise I'd probably just curl up with a book or watch tv, visit family, do some house jobs. I don't mind a rainy welly walk.

But yes, the rain can make it really dreary.

😂 exactly!!

Cook something spicy so it at least smells of hotter days far away perfect. Thank you. I rarely cook Indian and its our favourite cuisine

I have a sewing room so I go up there and make stuff. Sometimes I just go up there and hide from the kids.
Sometimes I just put the fire on, I eat too much and watch films.

Cornwallintherain · 16/03/2023 15:57

@Minieggbrownies I absolutely agree.

While I am looking forward to taking dd out puddle jumping when she is a bit bigger she is only 1 and doesn't walk yet, she hates the rain cover and I don't really see the point in taking her for a walk under it anyway as she is hardly getting to see much!
So if it's raining we either stay in play with her toys, do some messy play and watch too much TV or we go out to a baby group, sensory room/soft play, supermarket/indoor shopping centre, grandparents house or have a play date at a friends house. She also has swimming 1 day a week so great if that falls on a wet day.

Cuwins · 16/03/2023 16:03

Oh the library is another good one

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2023 16:03

Local museum is always a good bet here. Dd will go out in rain anyway though

catscatscurrantscurrants · 16/03/2023 16:25

I make a big 'nest' on the sofa with my duvet and pillows. I put my SAD lamp on (it came from Argos, tops up your quota of daylight in winter). I eat Maltesers, make myself a coffee and read while cuddling the cat. I also daydream and make plans for when it is sunny again.

Giggorata · 16/03/2023 16:45

It depends on the season and temperature.

In cold weather, I too look out of the window, thankful that I don't have to go out in it. I leave dog walking to DH at those times!
Then I read, watch a film, do my dolls house hobby stuff, bake something, turn out cupboards, daydream, snuggle.

In warm weather, I enjoy going out in it or sitting in the conservatory, listening to the drumming on the roof and smelling the petrichor.

Mypinkysperky · 16/03/2023 16:57

Light the fire and snuggle up with the dog under a blanket and watch a black and white film. Bliss

APurpleSquirrel · 16/03/2023 17:05

I'm on Devon/Somerset border - indoor stuff we do: cinema, bowling, trampolining, laser tag, museums, aquarium, butterfly house, soft play, theatre. We also go to outdoor attractions that have indoor bits like zoos, theme parks etc.
At home we'll watch films, play board games or on the Switch, do baking, crafts, science kits etc.

inky1991 · 16/03/2023 17:08

Fellow Cornish girl wondering the same thing 👋

Cornwallintherain · 16/03/2023 17:21

@inky1991 👋 helloooo. It has stopped raining here. Finally.

I think I need some hobbies! I'm very creative but I've never had a hobby as such. Other than running.

I just watch the rain on the windows with a cup of tea in my hand. I also like to read, knit, colour or take and edit photos.

I hate being wet and cold and I hate all that muddy puddles business - we did that once when I was trying to be a Mumsnet mum; we went on a walk on a very, very muddy path around a lake. The dc loved it at first but then cried the rest of the way around because they were cold and soggy, despite their waterproofs and wellies.

How old are your dc?

I don’t think I could get away with that as dc too active
