EasyJet hand luggage

Posting here for traffic. DD is going on a school trip at the weekend for 3 days and they are flying with EasyJet. To keep costs and time to a minimum College have told them they can’t check any luggage and can only take hand luggage. Fair enough. Except they are telling them that they can only take a small rucksack that will fit under their seat and don’t have access to the overhead lockers. I think Easyjet have enforced this in order to get people to purchase extra seating that allows larger bags. I’m pretty sure when we have flown with them 2 years ago we were told the same but when we got on the plane people were storing larger bags and small wheeled cases in the overheads as usual.

DD will be hard pushed to get all her clothes for 3 days in a small backpack. Would she be okay if she used her bigger backpack that will fit in the overheads no problem but might not fit under her seat?

You need to check the website for the dimensions of the bag as they can be pretty strict about it

The allowance is absolutely fine for 3 days away, just watch liquids

these people will have purchased the additional cabin baggage allowance

Yep, college have purchased the cheapest bare bones tickets which only allow a small bag, max dimensions 45x36x20cm. Can absolutely depend on the gate staff that say as to whether they actually check this or not. But if they do and your daughter has to put the bag in the hold, it'll be costly.

I’d stick to the allowed dimensions- although a soft bag usually easier to shove under. For 3 days can she wear her biggest clothes/coat/shoes.

Newjobformoremoney · 16/03/2023 12:20

Hi OP. I would get compression packing cubes and then find a bag that fits the dimensions exactly. I can get around 4 days worth of clothes into the bag that fits under the seat in front of me.

thisplaceisweird · 16/03/2023 12:44

Now the cheapest/most basic tickets only include a "small personal item" (45 x 36 x 20cm) so yes, they will have just booked these tickets and your daughter will need to pack accordingly or be faced with a fine. It's not ideal but she will be fine, plenty of room for underwear, a few changes of tops, pjs and a few toiletries.

They do still use the overheads, but you have to have an upgraded ticket for them. Your daughters school hasn't bought one; and they won't allow you to upgrade to one at check-in - they'll make her check the bag into the hold.

I wouldn't risk it. Surely she can pack three days worth of clothes into a backpack?! If not, I'd go for packing cubes.

EspeciallyDedicated · 16/03/2023 12:49

Yes, we've just flown EJ with this rule. My tip would be to use a soft bag not a rigid one, then it sort of squidges under the seat in front, you can get a reasonable amount of clothes in, just keep toiletries etc to the minimum and no books etc. For our flights it was about £35 per person to add an overhead locker sized bag

How will her DD compress the clothes for the journey back? Very easy for her DM to do it for the outward journey......

amiold · 16/03/2023 12:54

Flew with them last year. I took a small wheelie case. Checked in no issues but when I got to boarding they asked me to put it into the measurer and it didn't fit... so out came the card machine and they charged me £24

Rollergirl11 · 16/03/2023 12:55

She’s just going to have to bite the bullet and take her small backpack. It doesn’t help that they are going to Poland where it will be very cold and will ideally need jumpers/hoodies but won’t have the space for them! She is going to wear her bulkiest clothes going.

Have a for the vacuum bags you roll up to compress clothing. This is the sort of thing:

There are specifically sized bags for easyJet under seat storage on Amazon if that's any help.

I can recommend the Cabin Max Metz :)

Just flown out with Easyjet - lots of pre flight anxiety about the bag dimensions etc

An elderly couple who tried to bring overhead type bags alongside us had to pay £80 at the airport.

The sample pic below easily fitted under the seat in front - as per their rules.

On the way out to the a/c for boarding there were two staff on the tarmac pulling people aside with oversized bags…

There is a small workaround - you are however allowed a second handheld bag of “things you have purchased at the airport” - otherwise the duty free shops would all have to close I guess (So as well as the meal deal, I could fit in a few other extras from home - if that helps)

I’m travelling for 4 days in a couple of weeks and will have a small suitcase under the seat. Using it as an opportunity to travel as lightly as possible!

Surely she only needs one jumper if she's only going for 3 days?

headstone · 16/03/2023 13:28

Just wear the same clothes for 3 days. Take spare underwear and socks and pyjamas and one pair of spare clothes. It’s only 3 days.

PillBoxes · 16/03/2023 13:29

Three days stuff is no problem in a small backpack. One jumper/hoodie to change, same for bottoms. A base layer or vest thinggy for underneath if it's cold. Maybe an extra top also. Pjs, undies, chargers etc. No change of footwear, everyone will be in trainers anyway and highly unlikely they will be dining out in fancy restaurants that might look down at their feet!

I only use a backpack for 4 or 5 days now. It is amazing how much fits in there, and honestly the amount of times I have packed a bigger bag and come home without having worn half the things I brought has taught me a big lesson!

BarbaraofSeville · 16/03/2023 13:30

I travelled to a cold country on EJ with just a rucksack for 3 days, it was fine.

Jeans, jumper, boots, coat worn on the plane.
Another pair of jeans, another jumper, a few more tops and underwear in my rucksack, along with toiletries, charger, kindle, other bits and pieces in the rucksack.

The kids can share toiletries, they don't all need their own shower gel, shampoo etc.

The Cabin Max bags are good if you don't already have something suitable.

Silly question but need easyjet carry on bag asap. just for odd bits and paperwork no clothes
45h x 36 long x20 depth cm .
Seen some bags listed on amerzon for easyjet that say same size as above but other way round ie: 36 h x 45 long x20 depth
so 45 would be to long , or does that mean I can place bag in the size thing at airport ie upright so will still fit as its still same sizing . It's doing my head in flying on weds.
Also any duty free is that carried seperatly in sealed bag. or does it also have to go in your carry in bag on plane .

It is over 30 degrees in Krakow and Warsaw this weekend. cold?

GetDownkeith · 18/08/2023 22:37

I have one of the bags from amazon linked above. I am a bit of a super packer but even 19 year old dd can get 4 days of clothes and a change of shoes in one and she does not fold 🙄
Get one of those. Plenty space.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/08/2023 22:45

@OnedayIwillfeelfree That was posted in March. I suspect it was cold then.

Yes just stuff the bag in sideways Smile

The cabin max Metz bags are brilliant. We all have them now in our family and my 19 year old travelled to Paris for 3 days with it. She also used it on a trip to IOM and then used the same bag as a rucksack when age went out hiking for the day.
