Really impressed with the budget

I’ll give it to the chancellor. He delivered a bloody good budget today. Childcare reform (including increasing rates paid to providers by 30%) and 30 hours free for 1&2 year olds. Uk has avoided recession despite a global pandemic and Ukrainian war, more money on occupational health, plan to get more people into work

Not really a great budget. Feels like the opposite. It does not really help those struggling with the cost of living. And striking junior doctors or teachers get nothing. But yay mega rich people now have no limit on the amount they can put in their pensions. Plus the child care increasing only really helps people having kids in the future as it doesn’t start immediately. Those of us with school age kids already don’t get extra help. What about education? What about the NHS?

This. Exactly. Hardly a great budget for the vast majority of the population who need help NOW with the cost of living increases

restingbitchface30 · 15/03/2023 18:24

Not impressed at all. 30 hours free childcare from 2025! I have 7 month old twins and would love to work when they’re slightly older. Instead I’m having to quit my job because all my wages will go on childcare. I’m sick of twin parents being overlooked. The government is awful can’t wait to get them out

Hillary17 · 15/03/2023 18:25

Depressing that this is apparently all it takes to forgive hundreds of thousands of lives lost during covid and the destruction of economy.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/03/2023 18:26

People have very short memories.

I agree but I'm slightly dismayed at the delays to the childcare funding - you would have to conceive at Christmas 2024 (21 months away) to benefit from the 30 hours funding from 9 months Sad

Doesn't help those who are pregnant or currently paying £££££ in childcare NOW.

I agree. This is to buy votes from families at the next election . No other reason. Families need this help now .

Artisticpaint · 15/03/2023 18:31

Well at least they are buying votes, labour are telling us they don’t want ours

What happened to that manifesto promise about help with care home fees?

It went the same way as the 40 new hospitals

Happygirl79 · 15/03/2023 18:37

This government is full of empty promises . Same as help with care home fees now pushed back and new hospitals now shelved. The same will happen with childcare help. Sorry to seem so negative but I have no faith in this government coming good on their promises. They haven't before unless it's to help their cronies.

ImAGoodPerson · 15/03/2023 18:38

I actually think its pretty poor, there are many more pressing things that need funding. This will result in many providers going out of business I imagine for a number of reasons. It feels very short sighted IMO.

whynotwhatknot · 15/03/2023 18:41

nothing really in there to benefit me and dh-frozen eneergy hike for 3 months then what?

My guess is then we all struggle for a few months so they can make a big show of reducing energy costs in the autumn budget.

yep youre probably right and look like heroes

Leedsfan247 · 15/03/2023 18:48

Oh dear you fell for it!
UP TO 30 hours which is at £6 ph how many providers charge £6 ph??
If they were going to be honest 😂😂😂😂 they would say up to £180 PW towards childcare.
but on the upside no limit on how much you can pay into your pension - great if you’re on £100k plus pa
usual Tories looking after all of their rich donor mates

Gosh you're easily pleased. And easily mislead by smoke & mirrors. This is how they hope to get re-elected, with vague promises of 'help' in the future (not not now) and tax cuts etc that actually don't help anyone who's really struggling.

No proper taxation of energy suppliers, no price caps or profit caps, no nationalisation. No proper living wage, and some very 'top-good-to-be-true' promises about disability support which will probably see people worse off in real terms.

It's a pointless budget.

WombatChocolate · 15/03/2023 18:48

The system wouldn’t be able to cope if everyone was immediately entitled to free childcare and rushed into the system. There are practical realities.

Most policies don’t take immediate effect. The infrastructure needs setting up. This WILL benefit many families and lots will get some benefit from either April or September which are both close by. Yes, the full benefit to all won’t be felt for a bit longer.

I think people are rather unrealistic.

MojoDaysxx · 15/03/2023 18:53

It's a big zero for most people who are struggling with the cost of living.
Zero for our hospitals, who are on their knees.
It's a totally shambles.
As for helping parents - re childcare. It's not happening until 2025. By then they'll move the goal posts. They always do.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/03/2023 18:57

The Tories aren't actually going to be in power in 2025, in any case. Maybe the first couple of weeks of it if they delay the GE until the last possible moment.

April or September next year.

And I don't think enduring capacity is a proper reason for the delay because a) nothing is being put in place to help with capacity anyway, and b) why not provide the free places now for children already in nursery - those places already exist.

I mean, generally I don't think it's a great idea overall as it won't be funded properly anyway. So I guess it doesn't matter when it comes in.

Barannca · 15/03/2023 18:57

I think the childcare reforms are just there to make them look good and win the next election . Most of the changes are not to be implemented until after the next election so they are setting whoever wins the next election up to design. , implement and pay for the system which I think isn't as good as it sounds.
If this was announced as policy for a new government fair enough as there would be time to design it properly but after being in for 13 years and this close to an election it is very cynical.

Zero for all of the other public services which are falling apart as well.

LookingOldTheseDays · 15/03/2023 18:58

Zero for schools, where teachers are having to use their own money to buy basic stationery items.

Unsure33 · 15/03/2023 19:01

There are definite now incentives for small businesses to invest and that in turn means more jobs and growth . If you don’t have growth you can’t fund other areas .
And for those mentioning defence , you have got to be kidding , we are closer to a full scale war than we have ever been , even yesterday the RAF was scrambled .

Unsure33 · 15/03/2023 19:03

For those saying Labour will be in , that relies on them actually acknowledging what a woman is . No sign of that yet , so if they do a U Turn on that will that be a vote catcher ?

Barannca · 15/03/2023 19:03

TBH the mentions of stronger sanctions for people on UC and separating benefits entitlement from ability to work also make me very nervous.
i agree, I think we will end up with a very nasty system.
Also it's important to read all the details of the budget and not just the headlines as policies are reported to sound a lot more positive than they actually are

Pliudev · 15/03/2023 19:04

I knew folks would be along saying this. The Tories are desperate and will somehow find the funds to convince voters they are all good, caring public servants. No, they are not. They have destroyed the economy, bungled the response to Covid, are dismantling the NHS and the BBC, conned us out of Europe and lined the pockets of their cronies, the undeserving rich, I could go on but won't. They have brought the country to its knees and made us a worldwide laughing stock. And now they are the nice guys? I don't think so.
