What are teachers doing with their day on strike days?

I was reading the strike thread earlier and it struck me that I haven’t seen any of the teachers sat outside school on a picket line etc as they would have been years ago. We’ve got 3 schools locally, all closed but no sign of picket lines.

So what are they doing with their days?

My daughter is in Y6 and her teacher chose to go into work to help the year 6’s prepare for their upcoming SATS. A couple other teachers decided to come in to help her, bringing in their own children for the day as their schools were closed.

How do you know she 'chose'? She might be in a different union!

Whatever any of you who have an issue with thinking this is a “goady” question think. You’re all wrong and possibly in the wrong career, you should be mind readers, maybe more money in that. maybe look at your own attitude before you come at someone else!

I grew up in an area and at a time that suffered strikes, I saw picket lines daily. I’m asking why I’m not seeing that.

to all those who answered genuinely, thank you. It’s nice to have the understanding from people who are happy to share. My expectation of the teachers at my school is that they are catching up with things, that’s what I’d be doing.

Why should they be catching up with things? Why is that your expectation?

I’m in Scotland and did 4 strike days. We had a picket line each time and I went to all the rallies etc.
Then I went home and did SFA.
I certainly didn’t catch up with anything that I wasn’t being paid to do.
That’s tue whole point of a strike day:
no pay = no work.

At home, working.

I know I shouldn’t be, but where else will I fit in (more than) two days of admin tasks over the next fortnight?

I’m not picketing because it’s an hour commute and I can’t afford the petrol if I don’t “have to” be there.

Majorly fucked off today.

A couple of my dc teachers are replying to my dc on Google classroom (because even in the strike they are amazing and put the dc first). I don’t believe all teachers are like this but my experience of state secondary is very dedicated teachers.

We are striking because the Government refuses to put children first by properly funding their schools. So we are putting children first.

jamdonut · 15/03/2023 18:26

Our school has not shut or been inconvenienced by any of the strikes. Everyone is in school working!!
My teacher daughter was at home, but working .They were told not to go on a picket line at her school because they might not be safe!! (secondary in a 'deprived' area)

BlackFriday · 15/03/2023 18:28

Yes, please don't confuse teachers turning up for work (because perhaps they feel they can't afford to strike) with "putting children first."
It's those of us who feel we can't afford to strike but do so anyway who are in fact putting the children first.

avocadotofu · 15/03/2023 18:29

This week I'm looking after my son and catching up on work.

mackthepony · 15/03/2023 18:30

Bit sanctimonious on here.

They're all at home on Roblox

Tusktusk · 15/03/2023 18:30

Today I am in London marching with my union.
On the last strike day I sat on my arse at home.
Tomorrow I’m going to picket outside my school then I’m off to the gym.

EveSix · 15/03/2023 18:59

Teachers 'choosing' to go to school are possibly not in the same union or feel unable to strike as strike days are deducted from pay. There are strike hardship funds to which members can apply if taking strike action puts a colleague in financial difficulty, in order not to dilute the efforts and sacrifices of colleagues who hold the line and do strike for fair funding for schools.
Please don't assume that colleagues teaching on strike days care more about their pupils.

I’ve been shagging all day

Someone has a bee in their bonnet! At no point did I criticise. I asked a question. Good help the kids in your class if that’s your response to a simple question

Maybe not in your op but your other comment was a uncalled for and I agree on another poster it is a goady thread .
im also not a teacher and I’m also 50/50 agreeing with strikes but I don’t feel the need to teacher bash either .

Not striking, NASUWT.

In school teaching exam years and marking a million mock exams

So is my friend. It's a normal day for her

Saucery · 15/03/2023 19:16

Wonder what Roger Johnson was doing today, as North West Tonight wasn’t on due to striking journalists 🤔

KateAusten · 15/03/2023 19:25

Probably on MN moaning

NightNightJohnBoy · 15/03/2023 19:28

NRFT
I had a lovely day - I had fun with my own DC, had a coffee w DM and went for a run for the first time since the summer holidays. Oh, and messaged some old friends I've not been in touch with for ages.
All things that don't get done when I'm working ft as a teacher, reminding me what I sacrifice to do this job.
Back to school tomorrow.

❤️ thank you and I appreciate the dilemma you are in and the extremely hard work that you do. Thank you for continuing to support our children. They need you all

Those on strike should be on the picket line or marching. Same with the doctors - hardly any of them have been out and those that have were there for a very short time - it’s not a day off.

Very glad that wasn’t the case at my DS secondary school as SEN children wouldn’t have needed that as they went in today and tomorrow.
picket line really?!

roarfeckingroarr · 15/03/2023 13:55

Laughing at the pain brought to parents? Hoping the strikes achieve something aside mass inconvenience?

Doubt it

From what I can see, every teacher in the country and some of their kids and grandparents are matching cheerily down Piccadilly (having parked coaches down the side of Hyde Park). On decend dans la rue!!!!!!

Not a French teacher then?

Faceplant66 · 15/03/2023 19:38

Whatever the fcuk they like. It’s not a working day and they aren’t being paid. Totally goady post.

noblegiraffe · 15/03/2023 19:41

A more pertinent question would be 'What is Gillian Keegan doing?'.

Because it doesn't appear to be her job. Perhaps she's on strike.
