What are teachers doing with their day on strike days?

I was reading the strike thread earlier and it struck me that I haven’t seen any of the teachers sat outside school on a picket line etc as they would have been years ago. We’ve got 3 schools locally, all closed but no sign of picket lines.

So what are they doing with their days?

I would've liked to go on the march in London but have a child home. I have done some spring cleaning tasks and might do some sewing in a bit. I am ignoring my huge pile of marking staring accusingly at me from across the room!

WGACA · 15/03/2023 12:20

I’ve been on the picket line each time 7-9am. There have been local marches and talks afterwards. Today there’s a big rally in London with all striking sectors so nothing locally. Teachers don’t have to take part in any of this; they just don’t turn up to work.

Dd said one of her teachers said they are going on a demo to Westminster

Whatever any of you who have an issue with thinking this is a “goady” question think. You’re all wrong and possibly in the wrong career, you should be mind readers, maybe more money in that. maybe look at your own attitude before you come at someone else!

I grew up in an area and at a time that suffered strikes, I saw picket lines daily. I’m asking why I’m not seeing that.

to all those who answered genuinely, thank you. It’s nice to have the understanding from people who are happy to share. My expectation of the teachers at my school is that they are catching up with things, that’s what I’d be doing.

Just to add it was in a Year 11 Sociology lesson and relevant to the content of the lesson

Planning next week's lessons
Marking this week's work
Creating resources for a display
Subject leader work
Planning a training session for my after school club on Friday

Basically just trying to keep my head above water before I go back into work.

MelchiorsMistress · 15/03/2023 12:24

The teachers I know are either in work, going to a protest, or are catching up with admin work that they don’t usually have time to do unless they use their weekends.

Montasaurus · 15/03/2023 12:25

@LizzieBet14 amen to that sister!

No picketing allowed in my school- what do you mean no picketing allowed?

Picketing is a legal right.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 15/03/2023 13:43

Your expectation that teachers should work on a strike day is pretty poor...

I didn't see the original question as goady, but increasingly it looks that way...

BootsTrapBootsTrap · 15/03/2023 13:44

My two teacher friends have done nothing during the strike days, just had the day off doing nothing. They are both primary teachers.

Good for them!

SpringIntoChaos · 15/03/2023 13:47

My school is open as normal...not closed (none of our local schools are closed). HLTAs are covering classes and teachers who are striking will no doubt be planning at home to give them their weekend back for a change 👍

I have Covid so I'm home anyway...but I'd have been in school as normal. Wrong union, unfortunately!

EveSix · 15/03/2023 13:52

Picketed this morning, as will do again tomorrow.
I'm being a bit pedantic, so am deliberately not working from home during my directed time, but will get on with marking and planning at 3.30, which is what I'd normally do. I'll get the equivalent of lunchtime marking, 90 mins after school and 2 hours working after the DCs bedtime done this afternoon / evening instead.
Same tomorrow.

roarfeckingroarr · 15/03/2023 13:55

Laughing at the pain brought to parents? Hoping the strikes achieve something aside mass inconvenience?

DelphiniumBlue · 15/03/2023 13:59

Lying on the sofa reading, now.
Dealt with admin this morning that normally I can't do as can't get to the bank in term time, and can't do it online. Actually managed to get there in person (open 10-3!)but the problem still isn't sorted so I am trying to think of a workaround.
Bought a Mothers Day present for my Mum, and checked out the charity shops.
Walked a lot this morning, might do some yoga later. Am making a point not to deal with school emails.
OP, how do you normally spend days when you are not working?

Good!

They are not being paid for their strike day.
Just not being available for work is enough.
If they want to have a day doing nothing - good for them!

ellaballoo · 15/03/2023 14:56

I have done a 2 hour online training course .
I know I shouldn’t be working but it was important to me .
Will be on a picket line tomorrow .

Figrolls14 · 15/03/2023 15:00

From what I can see, every teacher in the country and some of their kids and grandparents are matching cheerily down Piccadilly (having parked coaches down the side of Hyde Park). On decend dans la rue!!!!!!

Figrolls14 · 15/03/2023 15:01

Marching

Forfrigz · 15/03/2023 15:16

I work as a TA and most teachers use the strike days to catch up on the reams of paperwork they do/ othet job administration stuff. We (support staff) usually have to come in to sort things at schools that need doing like reorganising rooms and resources.

LadyRoughDiamond · 15/03/2023 15:21

At home, lesson planning, with my kids. Also looking after a neighbour’s kids so that they can work. That’s the reality of teaching in a nutshell - the work never stops and some (fortunately not my neighbour) see us as glorified childcare.
