Quick question re night sweats

When you have them do you feel hot or are they just excessive sweating but not hot?

I'm 37 and having night sweats I suspect it's due to my anti depressants rather than peri as I have a regular cycle, definitely ovulate every time and have no other peri symptoms. But I'm exploring causes.... I wake up sweaty but don't feel hot.

I Googled it and various sites talk about it being like a hot flush but during the day so I'm slight confused! Thanks

Just bumping this!

I am having similar symptoms although not currently on antidepressants. I wake up in the middle of the night with my PJs soaked through with sweat in the second half of my cycle. I'm 39 and I don't think I'm peri as periods and ovulation symptoms are regular as clockwork, no other peri symptoms at all, and my older female relatives all hit menopause relatively late with a couple of surprise mid-40s babies even! I'm baffled as to what is going on and wondering if it is stress related? Hope you find some answers, OP!

Whyisitsososohard · 14/03/2023 16:56

@Olinguita Hmm yeah it's a funny one. I'm wondering if it could be a symptom on its own without any others?

I seem to get it whenever in my cycle but will start looking for patterns. So you wake up sweating but not hot?

Yep exactly, normal temperature, not hot, but damp all over and have to change into new PJs!

Choconut · 14/03/2023 17:04

I'm 47 and perimenopausal and when I have night sweats I feel hot with it just like hot flushes in the day - in fact I seem to run at a higher temperature al the time now. OH has night sweats with Sertraline more regularly and worse but he doesn't seem to really be hot. I'd suspect it's your anti d's rather than perimenopause.

Zuffe · 14/03/2023 17:07

Night sweats that do not recur, ie continuous, can be a sign of blood cancer. Those night sweats are cold, sometimes clammy. Worth getting that ruled out because blood cancers tackled early have a better chance of survival with less side effects.

Can2022getanyworse · 14/03/2023 17:31

I wake up feeling cold because the sweat is literally running off me and chilling my wet skin.

Funnily enough another hcp suggested I speak to a gp as whilst I'm in the age bracket for menopausal nonsense I'm still regular, nothing else going on, and I've been having these night sweats for years

Thanks. I actually just had some bloods done as I have an underactive thyroid and had my blood count done as part of my yearly review. All levels on this fine eg white blood cells etc. So I'd imagine this would show up there?

I get this from anti depressants. Only at night and i recently had a break from my medication and the sweats stopped but started again when I started taking them again

UnaOfStormhold · 14/03/2023 18:29

It depends at what point I wake up - if I wake during the hot stage I feel overheated and sweaty, whereas if I manage to kick the covers off I sometimes manage to stay asleep during the hot phase only to wake freezing cold as the sweat evaporates on a body that isn't superheated any more.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2023 18:41

I get this with a cold and with my period. Maybe stress too.
However, mine don't seem to be the same as menopausal hot flushes as my whole body doesn't overheat. My face would be OK for example as not under the covers.

OooohAhhhh · 14/03/2023 18:44

Same with me! It started a few months ago.
I wake up in the night with a sweaty chest area. It's only that area tho. I have to take my top off because it's so damp.

I'm 41.

NBLarsen · 14/03/2023 18:46

I get this too, I wake up literally dripping in sweat, soaked bedding, but I'm not hot. Same thing happens to me during the day though, I'll just break out in a sweat but don't feel especially hot. I think of it as being a hot flush but that my body has become hot inside and wants to cool down. I'm definitely in peri menopause, I have this and other symptoms but still regular periods.

Pinkypie86 · 14/03/2023 18:50

Again, I'm another who suffers and has done with night sweats over the last year or two.
I am dripping, doesn't matter what I wear or not wear.
It's more common and certain times of my cycle. My GP brushes me off at every appointment, it's becoming embarrassing.
I wish I had the answer for you!

Drumminganimal · 14/03/2023 18:55

Yeah I had this when taking Sertraline. Cold sweats that soaked my pj's, stopped when I stopped taking it.

Bluegingerbread · 14/03/2023 18:59

I saw Sage tablets recommended on here so thought I'd try them and they make a huge difference for me, no night sweats unless I run out. I imagine mine is peri but could be worth a try? No idea if they interact with ADs.

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 14/03/2023 19:12

I used to get this from antidepressants. I wouldn’t feel hot but would wake up with soaking sheets. Weirdly it’s stopped since I had a baby, which makes me think there is a nevertheless a hormonal element too.

icecreamisforwintertoo · 14/03/2023 19:37

I’ve always had night sweats - since my twenties so not a peri menopausal thing. I think with me it might be something to do with blood sugar levels dropping. (I’ve found out through doctor google that it can be a symptom). I’m not diabetic but do have shaky clammy low blood sugar episodes in the day as well sometimes.

foxlover47 · 14/03/2023 19:45

@OooohAhhhh I'm 48 and that's exactly what I get , wake up with a really clammy / sweaty chest

YukoandHiro · 14/03/2023 19:46

I'm having similar symptoms. 40 but still very regular periods and ovulation. Not on any regular medication.
I think it's the beginning of peri

Thea91 · 14/03/2023 19:47

Most but not all blood cancers show up on a blood test. Although likely not that worth knowing.

I have the same and have for absolutely years (pre kids even). I'm 44 yo. It's something about my temperature being higher I guess. Nightmare for buying duvets etc as I go to bed freezing and wake up in the night soaked.

This is interesting. I'm also prone to low blood sugar and low blood pressure.

Cupofteaaa5 · 14/03/2023 20:35

I get this for a couple of nights before my period some months. It's as you describe - waking up sweaty but not hot. Sometimes I'm just a bit sweaty, other times my pyjama top and hair are quite wet and I have to change. But I don't usually feel hot.

Blood cancer can sometimes be hard to detect by haematologists even when everything is going wrong in the body and screaming out. Mine came back negative for almost a year even though I suspected (knew) I had it. It does come with other symptoms though and lethargy is one of the most common. Lethargy in both body and spirit is common with leukaemia - difficult to make decisions, dislike of food, apathy for work or just living.
