Would you change this flooring?

I own a new build which came with brown flooring throughout the ground floor including kitchen, dining room, living room, utility room and hallways. Swatch attached.

2 years ago I really wanted to switch it out for white or grey flooring instead. I’m in a position to do so now, but should I? The 2nd photo is a generic picture from the internet of what I’d like.

The house is generally contemporary in style, everything is white and grey. There’s silver hardware. Concrete grey tiles in bathroom. White marble/black matte quartz kitchen. I just always felt like the brown flooring was a bit of an outlier.

I’d keep it, but put rugs down where you want to pick out a different colour. I think grey flooring might look really cold throughout.

Youdoyoubabe · 14/03/2023 02:11

I wouldn't but I am lazy and haven't changed a thing in my very tatty old house in 15 years. I have finally realised that I really just can't be arsed. I sell the shabbiness to the family as climate and environmentally friendly as havign new stuff is not good for the environment.

I also want to time the house renovation to only need to be done once before I die. I am about 50 now so am thinking I will do it when I am 55 so before I retire and it might last although be a bit dated until death.

Avarua2 · 14/03/2023 02:17

no I wouldn't change it. Grey flooring looks very cold. The wood look is warmer. Put some rugs down instead.

Maybe choose a different base paint colour, rather than white or grey, for the walls? Like a very light blue or green?

Summer2424 · 14/03/2023 02:28

Hi @smashin my Mum has done alot of renovation in her life and she wouldn't change the flooring you have, it looks nice and clean, i'd say keep it 🌝

Savoretti · 14/03/2023 02:30

The lighter flooring in the pic just makes it look so clinical no warmth at all

dudsville · 14/03/2023 02:42

If you like grey, my thought is that it goes nicely with a natural wood colour. As an example, we have bathrooms that are white and pale grey, but the bit on the floor that joins the bathroom flooring to the bathroom flooring is a natural wood colour and i think it looks good. When i was a kid i read in a design mag that some darker colours in a room provide a helpful base. Keep it, it's in good condition and is also contemporary.

MissedItByThisMuch · 14/03/2023 04:22

I’d keep it. That is quite a cool-toned wood, I think it would go well with grey and white. And wood will be more of a “neutral” backdrop, lending itself more to changing aspects of the decor more easily if you get sick of so much grey and white.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 14/03/2023 05:04

Easier to change the paint and add area rugs.

merrymelodies · 14/03/2023 05:15

We have grey flooring and I hate it. It makes the rooms look so cold.

Bigoldmachine · 14/03/2023 05:19

Keep! A room needs the warmth of a natural wood tone. To tie it in you could find some other natural textures of a similar colour… eg we have a wicker basket in the living room, storage boxes, a photo frame or picture frame in pale wood… a planter with pale wood legs maybe. It just all helps to tie it in a little.

Clymene · 14/03/2023 05:38

Keep it. Otherwise your house will look like a hospital.

smashin · 14/03/2023 18:53

Wasn’t expecting an unanimous “keep the floor” verdict! An off-white wood floor with a bunch of plants could be a nice aesthetic that isn’t cold/clinical, but it would be a faff to change.

Tempted to keep the current floor and also keep the walls white but get some colour through a rug? The living room has dark grey sofas - will probably go for a large cream rug

@Bigoldmachine yes! I have a few wood photo frames. I have the Samsung frame TV and have ordered a wood aesthetic bezel like this photo

Keep the floor and have a holiday instead. It is absolutely fine as it is.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/03/2023 19:09

I'm house hunting at the minute, not one house has done grey well. It's always cold, depressing and unimaginative.

I'd keep the current flooring and add some nice rugs, so much easier to change.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/03/2023 19:10

I'd add some soft warm pink if that was my floor.

userxx · 14/03/2023 19:10

I'd keep it.

cptartapp · 14/03/2023 19:17

Prefer the brown.

WinterMusings · 14/03/2023 19:19

@smashin

that wasn't what I was expecting when you said 'brown flooring'. I was expecting some dodgy brown carpet tiles or something 😂

your sample just looks like pretty standard (cheap) 'wood' flooring & NOT a horrible shade.

some of it looks awful & id want to replace it, but if it looks ok then rugs to break it up.

TicTac80 · 14/03/2023 19:22

I'd keep the original flooring too. I would worry about dirt, footprints and scuffs/stains showing up more on a lighter/white floor (and I'd get really annoyed if this happened!).

I think this is my issue - the current flooring isn’t horrible but it looks average. A new flooring might really level the place up and transform it. Especially expensive-looking tiles in the kitchen.

the more I consider it, the white flooring might look a bit average too

@smashin

sadly, I think it might.

How about a tile just in the kitchen area & carpet in the bedrooms & possibly paint the living area?

Bearpawk · 15/03/2023 19:36

Can't stand that dreadful grey Mrs Hinch aesthetic. I'd keep the wood.

EyesOnThePies · 15/03/2023 19:43

Keep it but put lovely tiles in the kitchen? If that works.
