What do you snack on when you need salt?

Apart from crisps or a spoon of salt 😳

Unsalted nuts with salt sprinkled on

marmite on toast with salted butter.

peanut butter (obviously the good stuff that has salt and sugar in it!)

cheese especially good cheddar with salt crystals

onepieceoflollipop · 13/03/2023 09:06

Poached or fried eggs with salt sprinkled on the warm yolks

bacon sandwiches and ketchup

CheeseMeltCracker · 13/03/2023 09:08

A spoon of salt!? Is that a joke??

Do you/other people get a warning that they need salt? I’m not sure I know that feeling. Interested to find out…

JennieTheZebra · 13/03/2023 09:16

People with low blood pressure/ high heart rate/ low blood volume can feel very faint and shaky if they don’t get enough sodium in their diets. Some people might even faint. My cardiologist has me on a high salt diet and it can be really difficult to get enough sodium in, especially in these days of “low salt” everything. Have you tried the electrolyte drinks that cyclists use? They can be good for extra salt without the snack. Other than that, pretzels, pickles, salted nuts etc.

midgemadgemodge · 13/03/2023 09:18

I feel shaky and sick if I need salt
Typically only after heavy exercise

MagpiePi · 13/03/2023 09:19

A spoonful of marmite or marmite on bread.

Or you can make your own electrolyte drink with equal measures of fruit juice (not squash or fruit 'drinks') and a pinch of salt.

midgemadgemodge · 13/03/2023 09:19

Also if you dip your finger in salt and can't taste it , that's a clue

7Worfs · 13/03/2023 09:24

Plain Greek yogurt diluted with water 1:1 ratio, add salt, drink.

You can also add finely chopped cucumber, then it’s basically drinking tzatziki.

Lastnamedidntstick · 13/03/2023 09:25

I bought a popcorn maker and do a big bowl with some melted butter and salt if I want relatively healthy.

cheese on toast with a good sprinkle of salt.
crisps
chips with +++ salt and vinegar

@CheeseMeltCracker my normal blood pressure is something like 100/70. I eat a relatively reasonable diet normally, don’t add salt, avoid processed foods etc as I don’t actually want my blood pressure to rise. But occasionally it obviously drops a little low which is when I feel exhausted and faint, and get a massive salt craving. Salty snack and I’m right.

ThreeB · 13/03/2023 09:31

Pork scratchings or a slice of buttered toast with some salt sprinkled on it

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2023 09:33

Pretzels Usually the polish ones they are the best.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 13/03/2023 10:06

I had to remove all added salt from my diet due to a cardiac issue. It took one week for my taste to adapt to the empty feeling of unsalted food (apart from the outside of meat, which I don’t eat much of, but it has to be seasoned or it’s foul). So I don’t ‘need’ it now. Always an option!

CitrusHaze · 13/03/2023 10:13

McCoys salted crisps or a mug of bouillon

It’s not about “needing” it from a taste perspective.

I can quite happily eat a low salt diet, and generally try to stay within recommended daily limit or below, don’t add salt or eat processed food or meat.

but some of us with naturally low blood pressure “need” the salt to stop BP dropping to a level where you feel faint. Salt does have a physiological function, and it is a necessary part of a healthy diet.

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2023 10:19

Sometimes you crave something salty . I know when I was still having periods I could have snorted salt .😃

ToBeOrNotToBee · 13/03/2023 10:20

Salted peanuts or cashews.

I always have a pack in the cupboard.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 13/03/2023 10:21

Cold jersey royals dipped into the salt pig. We usually have some leftover potatoes in the fridge.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 13/03/2023 10:22

roasted and salted pecan nuts are a favourite of mine.

Pixiedust1234 · 13/03/2023 10:24

This might explain why I have a annihilated the crisps aisle lately. Plus I've been feeling shaky, faint and sweaty. I assumed it was low blood sugar but perhaps not 🤔

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 13/03/2023 10:26

Slice of toast with salted butter or peanut butter on oat cakes. I have low blood pressure so a doctor said it's fine to add salt. When I had adrenal fatigue I started the day with a glass of slightly salted water. Made a surprising difference. Doctors recommend you liberally salt your food in those circumstances.

MigratorySheep · 13/03/2023 10:41

Do you/other people get a warning that they need salt?
dizzy, but like a deeper dizzy feeling than when you're ill every time you stand up, or have been standing for more than an hour, shaky and desperately crave something salty. I've been trying to eat more healthily for the past few weeks, but yesterday it was bad after exercise and today I'm going to crack.

Have you tried the electrolyte drinks that cyclists use? No, good idea @JennieTheZebra , thanks!

I don't eat nuts, and am trying to cut down on bread as I'm slightly overweight and love toast! Are pretzels healthier than crisps?

Last blood pressure was 90/60 which Doctor said makes me normal. Just!

When I had adrenal fatigue I started the day with a glass of slightly salted water. I might try this, maybe when DH isn't wfh 😂

You can buy salt replacement tablets, distance runners use them to replace salt lost by sweating

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2023 10:45

I like to think pretzels are healthier but more than likely not 😃

JennieTheZebra · 13/03/2023 10:59

@Mrsjayy
Pretzels aren't "healthier" but they are substantially higher in sodium, especially the ones with salt crystals on them.
I eat pretzels with cream cheese and pickles as a quick very high sodium lunch.
With miso soup if I'm really struggling...

Ok, I didn’t get that from the OP.

I am wee with low blood pressure (90/60) so it’s a battle. It’s balanced through medication but generally I find naturally occurring salts keep me going and I have rehydration if I’ve done massive amounts of exercise. Otherwise I feel crap. But I can’t eat anything ‘salted’ now, my taste has adapted and I find it weirdly unbearable.
