Why am I not tanning?

cherylsaidno · 13/03/2023 07:34

I'm so so white
I have dark brown hair and blue eyes
I can sit in the sun for hours on holiday (currently )
Obviously I wear a sunscreen (normally spf30) and I never ever change colour
When I was younger I would go on the sunbed for 6 mins 3 x a week but I also never changed colour (or even burnt )
Why am I not even getting a slight glow?
Been in the canaries for a week now at 26/27 degrees (feels hotter ) but no colour change at all.

It’s to do with the amount of melanin you produce, some people don’t really produce melanin so it doesn’t matter how long you stay in the sun, you don’t have the actual ability to tan

cherylsaidno · 13/03/2023 09:39

Is there anything you can do to help increase the amount of it you produce ?

Get fake tan.

A natural tan is your skin being damaged. That or learn to love being pale 😎

Honestly, just accept it and buy some fake tan

WandaWonder · 13/03/2023 09:42

Fake tan looks fake and stands pit a mile but as tanning causes skin cancer I really don't care

Just be happy with the way you are

NannyR · 13/03/2023 09:43

I'm the same, I might get a faint hint of colour, but generally I come back from holiday the same colour as when I went.
It doesn't bother me, I just embrace being pale, but you could use a gradual self tan if you wanted a tan?

Todaynotalways · 13/03/2023 09:44

I'm the same, though I have dark hair and eyes, I have very fair skin. My upper body sometimes gets a very slight glow, which disappears after a week or so, but my lower body is steadfastly white (blueish, white).

As PP's have mentioned, a tan is a poor health practice anyway, better to get a fake tan (I use a buildable tan on my legs from Isle of Paradise).

Eatentoomanyroses · 13/03/2023 09:45

I am the same. I don’t even really burn. I think the sun must bounce back off my pure white skin. I gave up years ago and spray tan before any holiday and top it up while I’m there. It’s a faff. You can take tanning booster tablets I believe but they’re probably not safe

Jadey31 · 13/03/2023 09:46

It took me a long time to accept my transparent skin. The sooner you do the happier and easier your life will be. I spent many years putting fake tan on in my late teens/early 20s but there was always somewhere it grabbed on too much or it was patchy. Try following accounts on Instagram that celebrate pale skin rather than the skinny tanned girls who look perfect. Even they don't look like that in real life x

DanceMonster · 13/03/2023 09:48

My skin is the same. Doesn’t bother me though, I’d rather not get sun damage. I just use a gradual fake tan if I want a bit of colour.

Crikeyalmightey · 13/03/2023 09:52

I wish I had cared less about having a tan when I was younger, as I now have all sorts of annoying little marks and freckles that am sure are a result of too much sun.

SecretVictoria · 13/03/2023 09:54

I’m exactly the same, same hair/eye combo too. I did used to use sun beds and I would get a nice colour. My legs took about 3x as long as the rest of me though. I hate it.

Fake tan always looks fake (and shit). I just don’t get my lower half out unless it’s like those 40 degree days we had last summer.

These days I proudly show off my whiteness. People stare

I bet they don't

DanceMonster · 13/03/2023 10:08

No one has ever stared at my whiteness and I’m almost transparent!

Farmageddon · 13/03/2023 10:15

Trust me OP, your 50 year old face will thank you for not tanning. Sun damage is the main reason for premature ageing signs in our skin.

They definitely do not stare 🤣

cherylsaidno · 13/03/2023 10:18

This is what we are dealing with-as you can see white as a sheet 😂
This is after a week in the canaries

I’d actually say there’s a light tan there!

QuertyGirl · 13/03/2023 10:21

I'm paler than that.

Embrace it

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 13/03/2023 10:22

I see a tan

Weesiewoo · 13/03/2023 10:26

I can't believe people still purposely sit in the sun to get a tan. Use fake tan.

2022again · 13/03/2023 10:27

having worked in NZ where even cats and dogs end up with skin cancer, if you end up with a melanoma in the future you will have to forget sunny beach holidays ...fake tan all the way!

Schmutter · 13/03/2023 10:28

Do people still try and tan these days? It’s so damaging and ageing.

Fake it! I can recommend the Decleor Gradual Glow. No horrid smell and it gives a lovely colour.

cherylsaidno · 13/03/2023 10:29

In the uk I always use dove summer glow -but on holiday when I use it and mix it with sun lotion it goes really patchy and starts flaking off so that's the only reason I don't use it abroad
