Did anyone else have this transfer thing when they were a kid?

Because DH hasn't got a clue but he's in his 50's.

I don't know what it's called but I'd love to get some for my kids.

It would be pictures of letters on a something that was similar to thick tracing paper. You would place it, picture down, onto some paper and rub a pencil on the back of it and the picture would go onto the paper.

Ive Googled "transfers" "paper transfers" "paper picture transfers" etc and nothing even close is coming up.

Does anyone know what I mean or what I could type in to see if they still exist?

Yes. The letter ones were called letraset. We just called the picture ones transfers as far as I recall.

Snowinsummer · 12/03/2023 17:00

Etch a sketch.

MissMissive · 12/03/2023 17:01

I remember it but don’t know what it was called.

Saisong · 12/03/2023 17:01

Search for rub-on letter transfers

purplemunkey · 12/03/2023 17:02

I know what you mean. Search for ‘rub on transfers’

modgepodge · 12/03/2023 17:02

You can do this yourself with tracing paper! I remember doing it. trace the picture you want. Take your traced picture and do as you describe 🙂

EdnaMole · 12/03/2023 17:03

Definitely transfers. Remember it well.
sometimes there was a “background scene” on card for you to choose where the transfers went (forest/underwater/space/fairyland)
Seem to remember Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck ones too?
Etch a sketch is something completely different.

queenrollo · 12/03/2023 17:08

We picked up some themed background ones of these at the Royal Armouries in Leeds last year. My son really enjoyed doing them.
And my husband remembers them from his childhood too - and he's in the latter half of his 50s!

TheClash2023 · 12/03/2023 17:09

Oh yes! I'd forgotten!

queenrollo · 12/03/2023 17:10

@Theloftmonster that link is great!

ItsCalledAConversation · 12/03/2023 17:11

Yes I remember these! They’re kind of like temporary tattoos in some ways, which are everywhere now, but you never see these any more. I used to find the finished backing sheet, with all its little islands of furious scribble, a very satisfying thing to contemplate as a child.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 12/03/2023 17:11

Djeco do some gorgeous transfer play sets.

ColdAndGrumpy · 12/03/2023 17:11

I think Google "rub DOWN transfers" if this is the sort of thing you mean?

Letraset

AnneWhittle · 12/03/2023 17:24

yes, we had them in the 60s/70s
like ColdandGrumpy's link, exactly

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 12/03/2023 17:28

I used to love these as a child in the 80s. I got dc1 one from a Castle shop somewhere recently (a knight's tournament I think) and dc2 has a fairy one still to do that I think I got off Amazon.

BertieBotts · 12/03/2023 17:29

The letters were Letraset. Used by Graphic designers as well before computers were easily used to create mock ups!

SpaceNambo · 12/03/2023 17:30

Yes! Lots of pretty images of animals & flowers etc. You could place them where you wanted.

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 12/03/2023 17:31

Definitely a thing and highlight of the annual trip up WHSMiths to get my back to school kit!

Yes. You can usually buy these at English Heritage properties.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/03/2023 17:37

I remember them!

I used Letraset to put title boxes and other written info on engineering drawings when I first started work. I was really good at lining up letters. I was pretty handy with a stencil too.

MargaretThursday · 12/03/2023 17:38

Ready Brek had Dr Who ones as a give away. We put them on the hoover, I suspect that was dm's idea to stop us arguing over them.
