I don't consider myself to be overly dull or that strange😂I also live a few miles from the dreaded undesirable King's Lynn in the West! The town itself has its' less than nice areas (doesn't any?) but is steeped in history and charm if you choose to go find it. I'm two minutes away from lovely quiet river walks and ten min drive away from a beautiful forest. Norfolk has some amazing beaches but they are best enjoyed off season! A car is essential for every day getting around but easy commute to Ely, Cambridge and King's Cross from where I live.
It really depends what you're looking for.

DS2 went to university in Norwich, met his girlfriend, bought a house in the suburbs and is very happy. We love visiting him. The area is really nice and you’ve easy access to some lovely beaches. I think it would be a great place to bring up a young family.

bellac11 · 12/03/2023 17:17

Im quite interested in hearing that people hate Kings Lynn, we're not local but do like holidaying in that area and we really liked Kings Lynn!!

Bemyclementine · 12/03/2023 17:19

@And155 similar here. House backs on to the river, afew Mike's to either King's lynn or another train station. Lots of river walks. It has its downside, being quite isolated, but I like it. Easy access to the coast, woodland etc all year round

Bemyclementine · 12/03/2023 17:19

Miles....

WindowGazers · 12/03/2023 17:24

South of Norwich is the only place I'd live in Norfolk.

Sundaefraise · 12/03/2023 17:31

I love Norwich itself, I would go there. It’s a great city. Decent shops, culture and it’s a university city, so has that kind of vibe. You can then easily get to the coast or the countryside. The Norfolk broads are beautiful and have amazing wildlife.

Hi OP. I live just outside of Wymondham. I live Norfolk. It has a vibrant culture with a good arts scene in Norwich. I commute to London often for work which is an hour and 40 mins from Diss (easy but long commute). I would strongly recommend Wymondham, also consider Diss or Norwich centrally. Price wise, Wymondham can be expensive, but it has lots of new builds which should keep prices down a little. Diss is a nice market town with good shopping and facilities, though Wymondham is closer to Norwich.

plominoagain · 12/03/2023 17:47

I'm not far from KL and it amuses me that people are so scathing about it when the reality is that it's no different from any other town in the South East except that the property is a lot cheaper , because of the reputation. Yes , it has a number of immigrants . So does everywhere . Schools vary , same as everywhere else . Fewer potholes than Hertfordshire whose roads are the worst of all the counties I commute through though . There are much much worse places to live , for considerably more money .

I loved my time in West Norfolk. Beautiful beaches not too far away, lovely place to bring up little kids. Not sure what it’s like post covid but the NHS there was first rate when I lived there - left in 2015. DC had complex health issues which meant we used the hospital a lot. Specialists used to travel from Great Ormond St to the hospital in Kings Lynn for clinics which meant we only had to travel 8 miles.

Liptr · 13/03/2023 12:33

West Norfolk gets criticised on here but it’s a good compromise, in that it’s in fairly easy reach of the coast/North Norfolk but has a direct train line to London, meaning that day trips to London are doable, plus Cambridge is accessible for working and shopping. Away from the coast, it’s not packed full of second homes and property is reasonably priced, although there seem to be a lot of Essex/London incomers - it can be rare to hear a Norfolk accent nowadays. KL is subject to a bit of snobbery but it has a great, cheap, art deco cinema and some beautiful old buildings.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 13/03/2023 13:05

Little Melton or nearby. In easy distance of Norwich and Wymondham and bang in between 2 outstanding primary schools and 2 outstanding high schools.

LlynTegid · 13/03/2023 13:54

Norwich nice, have friends who lived in Wymondham and only moved to be near elderly parents.

West Norfolk elected Liz Truss which says a lot about why you would not want to live there.

Pearldiamond8 · 14/01/2024 13:54

Can I ask where this town is that’s so lovely

My husband I went to uni in Norwich and stayed. My husband and I then moved to Buckinghamshire for 7 years due to work however returned 20 years ago to a small Norfolk village with our children.
Love Norfolk!

ProfYaffle · 14/01/2024 14:43

Diss is a good option employment wise. Norwich, Ipswich, Bury St Eds and Great Yarmouth are fairly standard commuting distances away. Cambridge and London are doable for hybrid arrangements. In this part of the world employment opportunities are spread over a wide area so being geographically flexible is helpful. (eg, I work in Norwich but dh works in Ipswich) It's also on the main London to Norwich train line, regular trains mean the Norwich schools are a realistic option for dc.

Mumsnet is a bit odd for opinions on Norfolk and Norwich. Sometimes a thread will attract people who go crazy for it, other times it comes across as hated. I'm not native to Norfolk but have lived here for 24 years now. I love it, it's a beautiful part of the world and I feel lucky to be able to live here. If you like a rural, slower pace of life it's wonderful. If you want urban excitement, probably not so much.

Pearldiamond8 · 14/01/2024 14:59

Thank god another positive for Norfolk 🙏

PauaPuffGirl · 14/01/2024 20:50

Reepham is a short distance from Norwich and the coast, good schools, various amenities (shops, library, yoga classes etc)

Toooldtoworry · 14/01/2024 21:02

Attleborough? I've long since left that area and never lived in Attleborough but I loved it there.

Banquet · 14/01/2024 21:04

Norwich is a beautiful City, we hope to move there in the future. Swaffham is a lovely market town, good nursery and schools.

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 14/01/2024 21:17

Norfolk is a lovely place to live and bring up children. In every place there are people who will say it’s a dull backwater, and equally people who appreciate its innate qualities. Norfolk is no different. Personally I love it, been here since I was 14 and thought I’d never seen such a beautiful lush country. I still think that fifty years on! And I’m still here.

Throwingpots · 14/01/2024 21:37

Love Norfolk. Actually live in Surrey but have been holidaying in Norfolk for 35 years.

Duckswaddle · 14/01/2024 22:48

I have family in Norfolk and I think it’s awesome! Norwich is a gorgeous city, lots of beaches nearby, the Broads are lovely and Holt is one of my favourite places.
family moved there about 20 years ago and had no problem making friends etc. they’d never live anywhere else.

Copperoliverbear · 14/01/2024 23:05

Wroxham.

Copperoliverbear · 14/01/2024 23:07

North Norfolk is best.
