Yes, you hadn’t mentioned it. But he didn’t give you the chance to did he, he just jumped in without thinking. Says a lot about a person (ie he would never treat someone, so the thought that you might after he drive etc didn’t enter his mind, he made sure you paid him back for that by getting drinks from the off).

I don't mind folk who are careful or decline things because they don't have the budget for it, I respect when people are up front and ask how the cost is going to be split etc.

But being right or miserly just utterly grim, they always seem to be financially doing well too 🤮

Another time I suggested getting a Chinese the following night. He said it was my "shout" because he bought me three gin and tonics that day 🤮
