First bra age and best place to get fitted?

Just that really.
Dsd is nearly 11 and is starting to develop.
Dh said about getting her first bra fit.
It seems the right age.
But where can we take her? M&S, JL?

Im sure i was the same age.
She does wear cami tops atm but im unsure if this is enough?

If her mother is around then I’d let her handle this one. I would have been mortified if anyone but my mum raised the subject at that age. I was mortified my mum raised it to be honest but I was happier once I had some training bra type things to wear.
What you could do would be to buy some new soft sports bra type things and new pants/pyjamas if she needs some and just leave them out for her to try - tell her to let you know if she likes them/doesn’t like them/they don’t fit.
If mum’s not in the picture and you want to take her to an actual shop to try some bras on then for goodness sake leave her dad at home when you do it. 10 year old girls do not want to talk to grown men about bras, even if it is her dad.

Not m&s. They measure really badly. You could use the boob or Bust calculator online and order what you need from there. Do you have any independent lingerie shops local?

We bought some ‘first bra’ ones from next, new look and m and s- they don’t have an underwire or anything, just a small step up from a crop top (most importantly a little more padded material so you don’t see anything) they start at 26AA, but I just measured dd myself and got her the size I reckoned!

Is her mum on the scene?

Mine I bought a soft tape measure and we followed the boob or bust method over her tshirt. I then ordered the size she needed.

Unfortunately for reasons i won't go into theres 0 contact other than in an emergency with her mum due to her mums history.
She cuts all labels out of clothes so we cant see the size.

Dsd is very open with me. Ive been in her life size age 1. She'll ask about periods and all sorts of things so i dont feel she'd be embarrassed about me approaching the subject.

We would definitely leave dh at home!

No independent shops unfortunately.

Will look at boob or bust website.

I think a shopping trip having a look around is in order next weekend

She already wears the sports looking style ones /camis but age 14/15 and shes showing a lot through them.

Just Google and there's an independent shop about 40 min away. So ill ring tomorrow and book for next weekend if i can.

DD and her friends in their early teens mainly wore bralettes. Much more common these days than ‘real’ bras unless she’s very developed. Gilly Hicks at Hollister do great ones, the halter necks are very supportive and trendy. Calvin Klein also good

Surely it's bit about age, but development?

An 10yo might need a bras, but a "late bloomer" might not need one until 14.Confused

I measured my dd using a measuring guide on the internet as she would not entertain the idea of being measured in store! We then went to John Lewis asking for soft seamless bras and the shop assistant was so helpful. Everyone happy!

I'm 46 and wear the Gilly Hicks bralettes (my boobs are tiny and regular bras don't work for me). I can vouch for their comfort and nothing shows through. Not all of them have adjustable straps though which is a pain when you're tall, and returns are expensive.

I just ordered a range of sizes & styles from Next & M&S and we did it at home.
I used to get my bras from Bravissimo and then an independent place in the city where I used to live so thought I had an understanding of what to look for to make sure it was a good fit.

JL are good. I still take 16 yr old DD there a couple of times a year for a top up.

JL are good. You may need to book an appointment.
With DD, it was during lockdown so I measured her and ordered about different sizes from M&S and got the right fit.

Also - just a little tip - make it into a special outing if you can. A trip for hot chocolate or something as a sort of coming of age recognition.

My DD would have moved out and taken the tortoise with her, if I had made bra shopping into a "thing".

I have spoken to her this morning in private about it and she said was excited. I've said we'll do lunch out at the same time.
She definitely needs them.
Ive managed to get a JL appointment for tomorrow.
The independent one are booked for 2 weeks ahead on weekends.

Congratulations you have breasts? WTF?

I mean sure go for a drink or lunch if you are shopping but Jesus don't be making it a treat for 'coming of age'- what does that even mean for an 11 year old

Not on your own. I don’t understand why we can’t suggest to a DD that our developing bodies are something to celebrate. Conversely I seem to remember my own childhood having mothers and older sisters talking about ‘the curse’ and teasing about needing bras.

Obviously one child varies to another so only suggest if it suits the child. The fact the DSC in this case was pleased with the idea of a trip out, suggests to me that the suggestion of a celebratory hot choc on the trip was perfectly appropriate

We celebrate birthdays, Christmas, achievements but growing breasts ?

I'm am struggling for the right words but what do you say to a child who is developing to make it a celebration? What is the part you are celebrating?
