Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser question...

BaconAndAvocado · 09/03/2023 16:29

Just ordered a Velvetiser (very excited).

If I don’t buy the Hotel Chocolat sachets, how would I make a latte?

I would assume it’s the same as making chocolate I just put what ever I want in it , we never use the hotel chocolate chocolate sachets - my daughter likes her hot choc made with Nesquik .

Gloriousgardener11 · 09/03/2023 16:48

I've discovered that you make hot chocolate in the Velvetiser using any type of hot chocolate powder that you would normally just put in a mug and add boiling water or hot milk.
Galaxy is particularly good.
Hotel Chocolates' own sachets are quite expensive !

kirkandpetal · 09/03/2023 17:29

The sachets are expensive so we just use hot choc powder.
And, if you google, loads of folk out there have experimented with cutting up things like crunchies and cream eggs etc and putting them in with milk to see what happens.
We love ours. It was a Xmas pressie to the family from my mum. An extravagance we would prob not have bought ourselves.

I just use Cadbury powder to make hot choc and it works fine. Tastes so nice. I prefer it to the proper sachets. I’m guessing it would be the same for a latte

florriegirl · 09/03/2023 17:32

To make a latte you can use the velvetiser to heat and froth the milk, then just make your espresso shot or two, put in a mug and add the hot foamy milk.

pawz · 09/03/2023 18:29

Any powder will work - I also love crushing up ripple bars, flakes, chopping up terrys chocolate orange etc. Basically any chocolate I can get fine enough to dissolve!

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 09/03/2023 18:34

I use any hot chocolate powder, plus I make chai latte 😋 I love my velvetiser! DD makes frothy coffee by adding the heated frothed milk to a shot of strong coffee

Yeah this.

I have an espresso machine so make a double shot and then froth the milk in my Velvetiser and pour it over the coffee in a big mug.

You could just make a small amount of instant coffee (but make it quite strong) and then do the milk, if you don't have a coffee machine.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/03/2023 19:06

You could probably grate any chocolate and put it in, that's all the hotel chocolat sachets are really. We have a milk frother, not an actual velvetiser. It can froth milk and heat it if wanted, can also heat milk without frothing and makes a great hot choc! I wouldn't bother spending ££ on a velvetiser, I think ours was about £20.
We use Lidl deluxe hot choc powder, and have tried some hotel chocolat sachets, both work.

ThreeLeggedCat · 09/03/2023 19:33

Chopping up Ferraro Roche doesn’t work well. Chopped up Freddo’s are good though.

Thanks StrawberryPavlova I don’t have a coffee machine, so this is great advice for me.
I don’t actually like coffee apart from lattes, coffees for softies 🤣

Doesn’t anyone just make a milky coffee any more 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

toastofthetown · 10/03/2023 07:35

I’d you did want a drink similar to espresso made from fresh coffee not instant but without an espresso machine, a moka pot or aeropress would both work and not take too much space in the cupboard. But if you’re happy with the instant then I’d do what StrawberryPavlova says as well.

Depends what you mean by milky coffee? A filter or Americano with a splash of milk? A café au lait? A macchiato? A cappuccino? All very different drinks, but could all accurately be called a milky coffee. I drink all of those but the coffee with a splash of milk which I find almost in drinkable. Though most of the coffee I drink is black.

BaconAndAvocado · 10/03/2023 10:49

I love the smell of coffee but find the taste too bitter....unless it’s been diluted with half a gallon of milk.

StrawberryPavlova · 10/03/2023 14:57

A latte is roughly equal amounts coffee and steamed milk so depends on the size of your mug but the Velvetiser takes between 120ml and 180ml. My mugs are 350ml so my lattes are probably 150ml coffee and 180ml milk, if you were wondering how much coffee to make.

Getthefiregoing · 10/03/2023 15:07

For the latte you're just using the Velvetiser as a frother for the milk and then add to the coffee.

For hot chocolate, I don't like the hotel chocolate sachets. I chop up half a bar of Lindt sea salt and use that. Add one spoon of sugar to take the bitterness out of it and top it with whipped cream and chopped hazelnuts.

redspottedmug · 10/03/2023 15:08

I make milky coffee with a spoonful of decent instant (azera/millicano type) dissolved in hot water, and top up with frothed milk.
Might add a drop of pumpkin spice syrup for a sweeter drink. Maybe a sprinkle of chocolate.

Tend to have HC sachets or tubs for the holidays only, along with mini marshmallows, dusting powder, squirty cream.

Rest of the time we use Green & Blacks hot chocolate powder.

redspottedmug · 10/03/2023 15:09

More importantly what colour velvetiser did you order? Mine is copper.

privateeyeeye · 10/03/2023 15:12

really do the powders taste the same as the sachets? I can't believe it !

But will test it out on the kids to see if it's true. Selfless I am

I have the grey one. I know they're just a fancy milk frother but I use mine daily! Grin

privateeyeeye · 20/03/2023 11:39

Ok so I made a hot choc with normal powder. It just tasted like a nice powder one, not like one using the HC sachets.

Blort · 20/03/2023 11:43

Make a strong coffee without much liquid and then use velvetiser to froth some milk.

Not what I would have bought to make lattes tho Blush

confusedofengland · 20/03/2023 11:47

For hot chocolates, you don't even have to make chocolate bars to powder. I have been breaking up chocolate coins (need using up from Christmas) quite small, then putting them in the Velvetiser without the whisk. This melts them but does not heat the milk. You can then put the whisk back & it will heat & froth as usual 😋

privateeyeeye · 20/03/2023 11:39

Well no, it wouldn't taste like HC because HC is chocolate melted and whisked into the hot milk. The whisking action enhances the powder slightly but it won't compare.

You can chop up other chocolate or buy brands other than HC.
