I’m tempted I’m not going to lie, I’m really
struggling with my weight and my BMI is now over 30.

Im an emotional eater and been through a hard couple of years and gained a stone.

Tempted to try Saxenda but wondering if anyone else had tried it? Good / bad reviews?

Took it most of last year and just started up again this week

Did put on a stone in between but that was my fault/Christmas/laziness

No side effects for me. Works well

SD1978 · 08/03/2023 07:57

Yes I would- however the cost is prohibitive to me. Have friends who have used it to good effect though.

Slimjimtobe · 08/03/2023 07:58

What side effects has it ? I wouldn’t mind paying for it if it worked

Spraylatter · 08/03/2023 08:02

@Slimjimtobe just read on the boots website that for 1 in 3 it has no effect but I assume this is people who also don’t exercise and eat better.

@SunshineGeorgie are the injections painful? I’m more worried about that and side affects

Did you see your appetite decrease quickly?

I started using in November. It started well, but by week three I was just feeling really ill and very nauseas and not getting any better. I was drinking loads of water, so it wasn't due to that. It was a really horrible feeling. I had to stop it.

There are lots of side effects, so read up on them first before you go for it.

dudsville · 08/03/2023 08:07

I've mentioned it in MN how helpful i found it BUT i then developed one known side effect, an upper intestine infection. 'Twas horrible, thought i was having a heart attack, even to the point of having an ecg at A&E, so i threw the rest away. Anyone struggling with weight has my sympathy, but having been supportive on here in the past i feel i need to correct that by updating my own experience. To be fair, i am sensitive.

SilkySuky · 08/03/2023 08:08

I've just started the tablet form Rybelsus 5 days ago and have had no side effects. BMI of 40, not much help from NHS except offering gastric surgery referral which I didn't want.

My appetite has just melted away, it's amazing. I get a bit tearful thinking about it as I've tried for 25 years to lose weight and it's never felt as easy as this.

Do lots of research is my advice and if you do use any form of the drug be careful what you do eat as there's lots of reports of digestion issues if too much dairy is eaten.

Good luck in whatever you decide

peachgreen · 08/03/2023 08:09

Yep. Lost 6 stone. But I combined it with intermittent fasting (16:8) and low carb. It’s been great for me.

Spraylatter · 08/03/2023 08:12

@SilkySuky any reason you went with the Rybelsus over the injections? I did look at them but wasn’t sure and most people seem to talk about saxenda

RNBrie · 08/03/2023 08:12

I would wait for Wegovy which is Semaglutide as opposed to Saxenda which is Liraglutide. The research shows that semaglutide is more effective for weight loss.

That said, you can only take it for 2 years and then research also shows that when people stop taking it, most regain two thirds of the weight they lost over the next 2 years. So you have to work in lifestyle changes or it's all pointless.

I lost 2 stone with Saxenda last summer and have kept it off but it's hard work. I still have weight to lose so waiting for Wegovy to be approved and then going to keep going.

SilkySuky · 08/03/2023 08:20

,,@Spraylatter a few reasons to be honest, I didn't like the idea of injecting myself. I'm not afraid of needles but the daily injections remind me of insulin injections and I am very frightened of becoming diabetic. The tablets also don't need to be refrigerated and are much more portable.

Also cost, it's a bit cheaper. Although not much.

I've been waiting for wegovy to be released, I would have just dealt with the injection issues as it's less than half the cost, but it just seems to get pushed back and didn't want to wait any longer.

Sallycinnamum · 08/03/2023 09:04

I had a very frank conversation with my GP friend about buying privately and he strongly advised against using it as I have a goitre and a history of peritonitis in our family.

Although the risks of thyroid cancer are low recent research has flagged a risk of peritonitis with Wegovny.

anxiouslemons · 08/03/2023 09:08

The injections are a piece of cake, the needle is so fine you honestly can't feel it at all. So that would be the least of my worries.

I tried it for a month but I just couldn't get on with it, i was waking up with horrendous anxiety and twice I woke up in the middle of the night vomiting

It suppressed my appetite well enough that I lost weight but the anxiety was horrendous so I stopped.

peterpepe · 08/03/2023 16:12

Do you just buy it over the counter or need a prescription?

SunshineGeorgie · 08/03/2023 16:41

The injections are fine.... small thin needle I rarely feel it

You can also buy via boots using Klarna if that helps anyone

I believe wegovy will be difficult to get from gp unless a very high bmi or weight related big problem. I'm not chancing it and waiting

Spraylatter · 08/03/2023 17:00

@peterpepe you can get it from boots privately it’s about £150

I tried it
I can't recall exactly how it went but I think I went back to usual appetite within a week

upped dose, felt headachey and was ill one night

not for me.

Reading this makes me think gosh if only! Re: myself! I used to be around 31/32 BMI, but in the space of 6-7 yrs gone over 40, so now getting help from my GP.
For a stone or so I probably wouldn't use it. I guess it's looking at what you've done to gain it, so doing the reverse.
But I am totally with you about the emotional eating.
I have been bingeing at night for years now, GP didn't take a lot of notice, but I've heard that therapy is supposed to be beneficial.

@Spraylatter have you considered ozempic? The results are better than saxenda and it's just one injection weekly.

I'm currently on my second week of ozempic and lost nearly 6lb on week1 and my appetite has dropped considerably with no cravings for sweet things which has always been my downfall.

Ozempic is the same drug as Wegovy and you can get it on a private prescription. I've got mine from Juniper and find the online support and follow up very good.

There's an ongoing thread about ozempic hop on and have a look, we are a friendly bunch Smile

EmmaEmerald · 08/03/2023 17:19

Some people suggested I try Ozempic but I think, if you react badly to an injection that's meant to last a week, that will be grim?

grayhairdontcare · 08/03/2023 18:18

@SilkySuky what are these tablets?
Can you get them from boots or is gp needed?

Itsrudemeghan · 08/03/2023 18:24

I had just one pen a while ago bought privately (about 30 days worth). I felt fine on it but have never used it again because of the cancer risks. I did maintain the loss afterwards until I got pregnant some time later, it got me into good habits that I kept.

To be brutally honest it was wonderfully liberating. Food became fuel with no emotional link. I didn’t think about food all the time like I do now. Hours and hours of headspace freed up each day.

peeweechigs · 08/03/2023 19:25

I thought this was a baby name thread!!! 😃😁😬

SilkySuky · 08/03/2023 19:30

@grayhairdontcare
Rybelsus is the tablet form of Semaglutide which is the actual name of the drug marketed as Saxenda and Wegovy.

Online pharmacies sell it, you can't just walk in to Boots and buy it. I had to have an online consultation which was a questionnaire about my health history, meds I'm taking and current weight/height. I had to send a full body pic so they could confirm my approximate BMI.

I also had to read a lot of info about possible side effects and what to do if I get them.

A doctor then reviewed my info and my prescription was approved. I got the tablets by courier 2 days later.

Hope that helps
