Cats banned from going outside in Australia, could it happen here?

I'm interested to hear thoughts on this. Article here I can't ever see it working in the UK. I also remember Australian farmers having apocalyptic mice problems on some of their farms, so I'm not sure how this fits in with that. Though there are many people who'd love to never have the neighbour's cat pooing in their garden again. What d'you think?

I think it's an excellent idea, cats kill millions of songbirds every year in the UK. Polish scientists have classified cats as an invasive species as they cause so much devastation. It's about time the environmental impact of cats is recognised and acted on.

PortiasBiscuit · 08/03/2023 07:40

Cats are not indoor creatures, don’t care what anyone says.

weathervane1 · 08/03/2023 07:40

I'm imagining me building up the courage to nervously explain to our cat that he's not allowed outside and that it's not my fault honestly.... before he shoots me the death rays and I try grovelling with carefully selected hand cooked tasty morsels and promise to do better in the future. There is less than zero chance of such a proposal working in the UK. For one, we'd have to respect the buffoons that run the country.

I'd love it. I like my garden, and birds.
Less chance of them running out in front of my car and all that entails too.

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/03/2023 07:42

I'm curious about the issuing of the fines to anyone whose cat strays into a restricted area, how do they find out whose cat it is to issue the fine?

WhisperingAutistic · 08/03/2023 07:42

It's never going to happen here. My 5 would be so depressed being forced to stay in.

Littlefaeries · 08/03/2023 07:44

Further evidence that humans are stupid imo.
Yes cats kill songbirds.
They're cats.
Humans supposedly the species with superior brains kill anything and everything.
Perhaps it's time humans stopped going outside.

Same here. Cats have been domesticated for thousands of years. They can lead perfectly happy indoor lives.

This.
Humans are much more destructive to wildlife.

😂

WeCome1 · 08/03/2023 07:49

It’s only one council area in one city.

I don’t think it’s fair on cats.

Starflecked · 08/03/2023 07:50

I hate cats, don't wish them any harm and keeping them indoors is cruel, wish fewer people would have them as pets though. Nothing quite like having to go on shit patrol before your child goes out to play in your garden because cats for some reason think it's the local litter tray.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 08/03/2023 07:50

I’ll keep my cats indoors if every fucking dog in the country is tagged and their owners fined every time they don’t pick up their shit 🙄.

GOODCAT · 08/03/2023 07:50

Cats need to be able to go outside same as most animal species. Forcing them indoors is cruel. Lockdown for people was bad enough and we have multiple means of indoor entertainment.

It's not the whole of Australia! Just some local council areas.

iloveeverykindofcat · 08/03/2023 07:50

My cat can't hunt shit. Sweetest cat in the world, but genuinely quite slow in the brain department. The other one was admittedly deadly when she was younger but she's too old to bother now.

Spottyheadband · 08/03/2023 07:51

Is there a more recent article? This one is from March 2022

No they bloody don't

Spottyheadband · 08/03/2023 07:51

The second link is from 2021 😁

Ridiculous idea

echt · 08/03/2023 07:54

Can't you read your own link, OP?

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2023 07:54

The sooner the better.

Even if there were a bunch of fuckers who ignored it, I think it would reduce the number of pet cats in time and certainly reduce the number roaming even if it didn't stop it.

Apparently there was a draft plan to kill all cats during the pandemic due to the fear they might have been spreading COVID, so I don't completely rule out the prospect at some point in the context of bird flu...
