What is the point of Phill Jupitus?

He's not funny and he always takes things too far. He just doesn't know when to stop!
I can't even remember when he first appeared on TV, but I wish he'd go now.

Well he speaks very highly of you.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 06/03/2023 21:45

He mainly seems to specialise in glumness and self-loathing on anything I've seen him on.

myveryownelectrickitten · 06/03/2023 21:51

I know him slightly in real life and he’s not especially nice in real life either.

hugoagogo · 06/03/2023 21:54

Really? I always think he seems lovely.

BigFatLiar · 06/03/2023 21:56

Most comedians aren't that funny unless youvd been drinking

GordonShakespearedoesChristmas · 06/03/2023 21:59

How nasty.

Flavabobble · 06/03/2023 21:59

I first remember him doing the voiceover links on the paramount channel.
In answer to your question: what is the point of him? Surely that can be applied to a huge number of folk off the telly.

whiteroseredrose · 06/03/2023 22:00

What's the point of a lot of people on TV? Phil Jupitus is nowhere near the top of the list.

He’s bad tempered and very self-important, sadly.

Alvinne · 06/03/2023 22:01

In recent years I've noticed he's always a bit creepy with things he says to women and takes thing a bit over the line from a joke to creepy. I didn't mind him on nevermind the buzzcocks back in the day but not a fan now

🤣 This actually made me LOL.

cravingmilkshake · 06/03/2023 22:03

Ah, we saw a warm up stand up gig a few years ago and thought he was great. Stopped after for a pic and was chatty etc.

AndStand · 06/03/2023 22:09

I've just been watching an episode of QI and he completely monopolised it by shouting and making stupid noises.
Another programme that he spoiled.

I don't care if he'd dislike me if he met me.....I'm not foisting myself on the TV.

Hasn’t he given up telly to be an artist in Scotland?

tenbob · 06/03/2023 22:18

There were some very unpleasant but startling similar stories about him flying around at the height of MeToo story sharing time…

I agree with this. I’ve met him a couple of times as we had a mutual acquaintance.

Funny you should say that...

I once read an article about QI where someone, possibly in production, ( I'm going to say 'allegedly' here) said that there was one regular pundit who always wanted to know the questions in advance of the programme so that 'he' could work on his replies.
'He' wasn't well liked .

My husband and I immediately thought of him.

I don't like the way he constantly looks to the audience for approval and always seems to want a big laugh.

I'm not saying Phil Jupitus was that person, but it was odd that we both felt the same.

newnamethanks · 06/03/2023 22:35

A comedian looking to the audience for approval seeming to want a big laugh? What can he be thinking of? that's no way to behave. I'm shocked. Bloody comedians, trying to be funny. Away with them.

GlassBunion · 06/03/2023 22:44

@newnamethanks
What I was trying to say was that many comedy folk pitch up and say their humorous quips.
But a few, like Jupitus actively seek approbation . Acaster is another one who does this.

We saw him live a few years ago too and were really disappointed. We were expecting stand up and what we got was 80% a poetry recital. One about mums in Waitrose is the only one I can remember.

LubaLuca · 06/03/2023 22:49

I've been wondering this for more than 20 years. He has such a nasty edge to his humour, shouting and haranguing. I'm amazed he's dragged his career out for this long.

He's ruined the program for me so many times by doing this. I have wanted to hear what Stephen or Sandi were explaining as it was interesting but could only hear that twat.

Don't you dare bring James into this!! 😂 I do agree about PJ though. His standup is awful I can't warm to him at all.

Was this his porky the poet persona? I think he started off as a performance poet back in the day. I met him about 8ish years ago - I was dating one of his friends. We saw him perform (was that exciting I can't remember what it was about but it involved poetry...), and then we all went out for a meal.
He seemed nice enough to me.

BaroldBalonz · 06/03/2023 23:45

I went through a phase of reading autobiographies from all sorts of people - probably about 100 of them, mostly celebrities (mostly because I never really know who people are and how they got there). There's only two that I didn't get beyond the first chapter - Chris Moyles because it was written in his vile radio persona, and Phil Jupitus who takes himself far too seriously and is basically not interesting and just dull.

The other dishonourable mention goes to James Corden - I liked him until I read his book - works hard, tried far too hard, don't read it if you still want to see him as a good, funny entertainer. I wish I hadn't read it.
