Would your 17 year old do this?

I'm trying to gauge how stupid this is. He was at home and there was some bedding hanging in the garden. He noticed it was raining so he brought it in and...... dropped it on the floor and left it there. Now I appreciate the fact he brought it in, but am I being unreasonable to be a bit annoyed that he just dumped it on the floor? Am I expecting too much??

Rain? What rain?
Washing? What washing?

should she bring it in (0/10 chance) (it's only rain)...

I'd be equally unsurprised to find it over the bannister (where it's usually hung to 'finish off') or thrown over something in the conservatory (without ANY thought to the suitability of it!)

I used to quite a lot as a teen (as my mum worked full time) but very very little off my own back. I just couldn't be bothered!! So I try to remember that!

Ducksurprise · 06/03/2023 19:45

Same parents, I think same parenting 4/6 would have noticed and put it in basket 1/6 might have noticed but definitely would have dumped it on sofa/floor 1/6 would not have even noticed (this one is DD before anyone says it is sex related)

Bunnyishotandcross · 06/03/2023 19:19

Ime there is no logic like that of a teen...
Ds ( prob about 17) told me he left puddles on the bathroom floor as he didn't want to get the bath mats wet by standing on them.. He genuinely had no idea that is actually their purpose..

🤣🤣🤣

Love it!

My ds (18) probably (definitely!!!) wouldn't have noticed it was raining but if he did bring it in he'd have left it in the lounge in the washing basket we take washing in and out in.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 06/03/2023 19:52

Ha! Quite possibly, but it's more likely DS would chuck it on the dining table, as that's right by the back door.

It's not something I could get worked up about tbh, I'd just laugh at him and ask him to put it where it goes next time. Once I'd thanked him for bringing it in...

LynetteScavo · 06/03/2023 19:53

Yes, that's something my DC would do. Or put it on the oak dining table and wondered why I fussed about the table being water damaged. And yes, I'd be annoyed, but thank them and suggest they find a washing basket or put it in the tumble dryer next time.

Why are there so many useless 17 year olds ? Why didn't their parents teach them life skills ?

MummyInTheNecropolis · 06/03/2023 19:58

Mine wouldn’t have noticed it was raining, and if she did she wouldn’t give a second’s thought to the washing. If I called her and asked her to bring it in, she would say no as she couldn’t risk getting her hair wet/smudging her make up etc. She’d then have a big dramatic rant about how hard her life is and how nobody understands her.

I really drew the short straw here didn’t I? Where can I go to trade her in for a better model?

maddiemookins16mum · 06/03/2023 20:17

I wonder if a female 17 year old would have done something different to the Ops Son. No way would my 17 year old DD have done that, she’d have put it over the radiators.

I was clear in my reply that it would be my DD that wouldn't even notice let alone bring it in.

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 07/03/2023 00:09

I reckon if mine was off a screen long enough to realise it was raining, he'd bring it in and hang it over the doors like I do when the airer is full and I need more space. He wouldn't dump it on the floor as we have a dog that tracks mud into the house from the mudpitgarden and hears me moaning about this quite a lot Grin

RainBow725 · 07/03/2023 00:25

Mine has hung dirty washing out on the line before now so... yes, probably.

thaegumathteth · 07/03/2023 02:47

My 16 year old would never notice in a million years

My 12 year old may well notice and plonk it on a chair or if she's after something hang it up

Jynxed · 07/03/2023 03:13

None of my three in early twenties, or husband in his sixties, would even notice. If I pointed it out and asked them to bring it in they would (eventually) and husband and one child (adult) would hang on clothes horse and the other two would leave in a basket on the floor.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 07/03/2023 03:25

In the vanishingly unlikely event of noticing the rain, all of mine would dump it on the kitchen table and expect to be thanked for their perspicacity.

UsingChangeofName · 07/03/2023 04:24

I'd be quite impressed if any of mine had both noticed it was raining AND realised there was washing out, and then run out to bring it in, BUT, having got that far, it is ridiculous to dump it on the floor.
Wasn't the basket you'd carried it out in, just there, by the door ?

I know. One poster said it was ‘amazing’ that they brought it in at all. Amazing. That someone at the age of 17 brings in washing when it starts to rain. Is it amazing to expect that a 17 year old is aware of the running of the household in which they live and actually contributes to that in a minimal way? The bar really is very low. And people wonder where useless DPs come from… this is how they’re made.

Emptycrackedcup · 07/03/2023 05:52

Very stupid. But I'm almost impressed he brought it in (sad that my bar is so low, but I don't expect much from teens)

Wallywobbles · 07/03/2023 05:56

Mine would have put in the tumble dryer to finish drying or left it in the basket if dry. Very little chance of folding. 18 y o would have folded and put in ironing pile.

ClannadSinger · 07/03/2023 05:56

Mine wouldn't think to bring washing in unless I asked him. It if he did he would dump it on the chair in a heap not the floor.

Because teenagers do bloody stupid things. Primary school children seem to do things logically and helpfully. As do those in their 20s. There seems to be about 7 or 8 years where teens do the dumbest things while thinking they are some sort of hero for doing a simple task and have hurt feelings if what they have done badly actually makes more work for others. My 19yo seems to have just come out the other side of this nonsense and is now seems to have regained the same logic he had aged 11.

FrenchandSaunders · 07/03/2023 07:33

Nope wouldn’t have noticed the rain …. unless it was something of theirs … two DDs.

percypercypercy · 07/03/2023 07:34

One of mine at 17 wouldn't have given it a thought. Washing on the line wouldn't register with her and neither would rain unless she had to go out. His sister would have brought it in, dried it and put it away.

WellTidy · 07/03/2023 07:37

Thinking back to when I was 17yo, which is easy to do as I was 18 and one month going to university, so all of my time at home I’d have been 17 or younger.

Lived in wales and everything was line-dried, so we were all on constant alert for rain. Neighbours would shout ‘rain’ across to each other in the garden so that everyone could bring in the washing. I would 100% have brought it in, and I’d have taken the basket and peg bag with me out into the garden, so I’d have put it in the basket as I took it off the line. I’d have been unsure whether I was supposed to tumble dry it (probably not) or put anything on radiators or leave it in the basket, so I’d have left it in the basket.

I know that whatever I’d have chosen to do would 100% have been the wrong decision when my mum got in though.

Xrays · 07/03/2023 07:42

My 19 year old wouldn’t have even looked out of the windows if they were home. They sleep until about 12/1 if they’re not doing anything and then they’ll just sit in a dark room watching Netflix ….! 🙄😆 (That’s when they’re home from university anyway).

My DD would notice and do fuck all. My DS1, if his, would bring it in and change his bed while at it. DS2 wouldn't notice the rain, the sheet, the day....
