Help me lose a kilo in 2 weeks

LoseWeight1 · 06/03/2023 10:08

Is it possible? I have a big event with lots of friends I haven't seen since pre-kids in 2 weeks and am feeling really self conscious.

I think if I lost a kilo it would really help. I am about 3 kilos over my ideal weight, which even though is not a lot, is making me look a lot bigger coupled with how my bodyshape has changed since pregnancy (and I am quite short)

How strict do I need to be to lose this much in a short period of time? I eat healthily but my downfall is constant snacking when working from home. How do I stop myself?

Not an ideal way to lose weight, but I once lost a lot of weight after a jaw operation when I could hardly open my mouth. I lived on home made soup, veg, pea and ham, lentil and blended into smoothies. Also yoghurt and rice pudding. Only drink water, herb tea or black coffee.

ThreeRingCircus · 06/03/2023 12:21

If I need to lose weight quickly I do the following (I know this isn't ideal but works for me if I do just a couple of weeks maximum)

Fruit for breakfast
Soup for lunch (no bread)
Weight watchers ready meal for dinner with some extra veg on the side.
No snacks but do drink tea (without sugar). If I'm really hungry I have a can of diet coke and drink it slowly.

It's not at all sustainable as a long term thing but works for me for a week or two as it takes all of the thought out of meals.

Loads of people will come on telling you not to do it or it can’t be done, but ignore them. The quickest way is to go zero or low carb. Eat as much fish, lean meat, eggs and green vegetables and you need to fill up and the weight will drop off. A little oil for cooking is fine and allow yourself an apple and a satsuma each day if you get desperate. Good luck!

Thank you some great tips!

I think I'm going to try to cut snacking by having a herbal tea whenever I am hungry.

I am going to boil some eggs for when I am desperate so at least its not carbs/sugar.

I will cut all sugar apart from fruit, no treats.

Cutting all carbs is probably going to be impossible for me but I will try as many days as possible!

I will also make sure to go for a walk everyday that I am not working out, regardless of how busy my day is.

Fingers crossed!

@Beebumble2 I did briefly hope for a stomach bug so I could easily not eat for 2 or 3 days haha I'm going to regret it if I do catch one and feel rotten

I find cutting down on carbs perfect if you need a short term solution- it's mostly water weight but if it's for a specific event that's fine. Find carb substitutes, so I use courgette for spaghetti and greens with a stroganoff, cauliflower rice with curries.

GNR2022 · 06/03/2023 13:00

One kilo in two weeks? So just over 1lb a week? Not hard at all, you don’t need to cut out all carbs totally, just have sensible portions and cut down on snacks. What does a normal day of eating look like for you?

I would stick to three meals a day and two snacks, up your protein and fats, and as much unprocessed food as you can. Plan your meal/snack times so you don’t go too long without food, no more than 4 hours.

Jesko · 06/03/2023 13:01

Losing two pounds is going to make you look almost no different surely.

But here's what I do; make a very big pot of soup filled with veg and only eat that for the week.

MrsAvocet · 06/03/2023 13:06

A pound of fat is "worth" about 3500 calories if I recall rightly so you need a calorie deficit of around 500 per day to lose a kilo in 2 weeks. That's do-able if you put your mind to it.I would use something like Myfitnesspal and be completely honest with yourself - weigh your portions as we often eat far more than we realise, and record your exercise accurately. Aim for some exercise every day even if it's just a short walk. It will start to tone you up and make you feel better in yourself even if you don't lose all the weight.Eat plenty of high protein foods that help you feel full for longer and keep as busy as possible so that you are less tempted by high calorie snacks etc.
You are much more likely to keep weight off if you do it slowly and sensibly.
Good luck, and enjoy your upcoming event.

EveSix · 06/03/2023 13:09

Easy peasy.
As Jesko suggested, make a big pot of broth or soup, or a massive batch of coleslaw, and just eat that. And some boiled eggs for protein.
Drink lots.
Get a pacey constitutional walk in everyday, even if it's just 30 mins.
It'll melt off.

worriedandannoyed · 06/03/2023 13:13

A kilo is easy to lose in a week, you could lose double that in two weeks.

Walk as much as you can, cut down on sugar. Eat salads/soup for lunch and chicken/fish with veg for dinner.

Snack ok carrot/cucumber sticks and drink loads of water

Boshi · 06/03/2023 13:19

drop your calorie intake as much as you can (there are calorie calculators to help you do this safely) and figure out a daily menu that helps you stick to it. And just eat that or small variations on it for the 2 weeks. So you don’t have to spend too long thinking of a daily menu

For example My breakfast is always the same and I tend to eat a boiled egg with 1 toast for lunch leaving a healthy calorie budget for snacks/dinner.

also do some toning exercises to make the most of that 1kg loss, stomach vacuums/vacuum twists are a good one to do over 2 weeks and see a change

WaddleAway · 06/03/2023 13:21

A kilo isn’t a lot to lose in 2 weeks. It’s just over 1lb a week so is easily doable. You just need to drop your calories. 1lb of weight is around 3500 calories so you’d only need to drop 250ish a day.

WaddleAway · 06/03/2023 13:22

(I mean 500ish a day)

Whataretheodds · 06/03/2023 13:26

I'd also suggest lo carb high protein. No bread, no sugar, no booze, no/low caffeine. Avoid sweeteners.

The best thing you could do is exercise for 30 mins every day, drink plenty of water, it will make the biggest difference to how you feel and hold yourself in the shortest time.

LoseWeight1 · 06/03/2023 14:30

I agree it should be feasible but I'm not very good at limiting what I eat...

To PP who asked, a typical day looks like:

  • toast and nut butter for breakfast (one slice, sometimes two) or porridge. Latte from the coffee shop (I know just cutting this out would give me a good calorie deficit but it's my only happiness when I work from home!!)
  • snack late morning, usually crisps or sour cream pretzels. Usually so addictive I don't really stick to the portion size
  • salad for lunch with egg or tuna, and a base of pulses or quinoa or couscous.
  • always fancy something sweet after so it will be either fruit or biscuit/chocolate if there is something in the house
  • DH usually cooks up a storm for dinner, so stiry fry or bolognese or veg curry with rice and naan. Carb feast!

As we have dinner late I sometimes have rice cake with cheese as well late afternoon when DC have their afterschool snacks.

Now I've written it up, it is a lot!!!

You could just cut out your snacks and lose a kilo in 2 weeks. It may be ‘hard’ for you but you either want to lose the weight or not! It won’t happen without sacrificing something.

ASGIRC · 06/03/2023 14:40

Based on your normal eating pattern, I would either cut or swap your mid morning snack. Instead of crisps or sour cream pretzels (sooo delicious, I agree!!!) you could have some fruit, or maybe drink some tea with no sugar?

And then for dinner you can eat what your partner cooks, but just try to limit the portion?

You should be able to lose 1kg easily.

Anotherporkypie · 06/03/2023 14:45

Easy to change some of those things . Have an egg and porridge for breakfast or make up overnight oats which includes protein

Ask for your coffee to be skinny

switch to salted low calorie popcorn rather than crisps or pretzels

lunch looks fine have fruit after . If you hanker after choc a small piece of the darkest expensive sort is fine but just have that . I break into smaller bits and suck them to get my choc fix .

Try options chocolate drink later on if you get hungry late afternoon . Try nairns oat biscuits if you are peckish

evening meal looks fine if you can bulk up bolognaise with more veg - courgette and carrot ? All the better
Try and make some of the evening meals chicken with no skin or fish
Go easy on the rice / pasta / potatoes you have 100g of any of them

Drink sparkling water with a slice of lime instead of alcohol as much as you can . If you do want alcohol occasionally just have one and do a pub measure

Anotherporkypie · 06/03/2023 14:47

Cut out the cheese by the way but allow yourself a sprinkle of Parmesan on an oat biscuit

husbandcallsmepickle · 06/03/2023 15:14

I'd recommend the 16.8 diet. I lost 1kg in the first week and nearly 1kg the second week.

Jesko · 06/03/2023 15:59

You eat quite regularly across the day; I'd push breakfast to about 11 then have nothing else until dinner.

This is basically what I do as a rule now and I've lost 4 stone over as many years; slowly but it's very sustainable.

LoseWeight1 · 06/03/2023 16:19

I saw 16:8 and thought "oh that's feasible, I can avoid eating for 8 hours a day" duh!!

I do think eating breakfast later is a good plan. If I eat breakfast with the DC at 7 I'm ready for a full meal by 10, but I find that if I don't start eating I sort of don't feel the hunger and could probably wait til late morning.

Currently having a black tea to keep me busy and off the snacks. Proud of myself!

Maybe you could swap out your snacks instead of cutting them completely - so switch white bread or pasta to wholegrain.

For your morning snack you could have popcorn instead of crisps or pretzels, It will give you a the same crunch, but with less calories.

For breakfast you could have porridge with nut butter to keep you full for longer. Or scrambled eggs.

You could ask your local cafe for the low calorie version of your latte, or if there is a small size, i think the smallest is about an 8oz cup (kiddies size). That way you still get your coffee treat but in a smaller portion.

For something sweet in the afternoon could you have a fruit smoothie, or even a protein shake with banana, cocoa powder and peanut butter - very delicious and filling.

Also for dinner you can just pile up the bolognese part and have a smaller amount of pasta.

Farmageddon · 06/03/2023 17:21

Actually, my suggestions probably won't help drop weight in the short term sorry, I suppose they are more long term habits. For 2 weeks you would probably need something a bit more extreme.

Exactly the same! If I don't kickstart my metabolism I can easily ride it out until lunchtime.
