Surely it should be drape bangs as I don't think Americans have curtains?

Also why is it bangs rather than bang? is that because the fringe (British English) is parted into two. It's a Sunday & I have time on my hands and this is lighthearted obviously!

That’s grown out fringe to me. Bangs isn’t a UK thing

They are now...things change!

DappledThings · 05/03/2023 20:39

DD (5) has this as she is growing out her fringe. Had no idea it was ever intentional enough to have a name.

There must be a UK term for it though that isn't anything bangs.

Please no not another Americanism, I can't bear it. Why is there an obsession with adopting American words? What's wrong with our English words?
Bangs =fringe
Diaper = nappy
Sidewalk = pavement
We have perfectly good words that have been used for generations. Why do we have to change them?

I completely agree!!!

TiredandLate · 05/03/2023 20:49

I think I have bangs based on the pics up thread. Definitely not the same as a fringe.

Snazzysausage · 05/03/2023 20:51

@TribeD
(fondly remembering the fringe that used to be on my nanas pelmet, curtains, tie backs and cushions)
Yes! Nana's decor,same here!

Bangs is what the yoof at school call a fringe. Curtain bangs are a long, grown out fringe. They would also tell you to "search it up" no doubt.

Bangs is American for fringe. (Social media has brought it to our attention.)

Jesko · 06/03/2023 11:49

Why not? Language is a living thing, it evolves.

This sneering at US English on here is incredibly tiresome.

LegPain · 06/03/2023 11:58

I think a longer blunt fringe/shorter curtains is more in than the previously more popular longer curtains. Think Wednesday Adams

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/03/2023 12:01

They seem to be ultra fashionable if anything. Very 1970s.

But let's hope those curtain that boys I used to snog in the 90s had don't make a comeback too.

Undermyumberellaellaella · 06/03/2023 12:03

When I first started reading this I thought this was about actual curtains and the 'bangs' were another word for the hold backs when the curtains are open. Then I realised it was a grown out fringe🤣🤦🏼‍♀️.

I don't know if people in this thread are being serious or deliberately obtuse
Anyway, pic attached of curtain bangs for anyone who is genuinely confused:

That was my mums hairstyle since the sixties. We just call that long layers.

Housewife2010 · 06/03/2023 12:24

It's a grown out fringe. The Princess of Wales (and me) have had that style for years.

Beachbabe1 · 06/03/2023 12:30

Had them done a few wks ago, hairdresser said everyone is asking for them so no they are not outdated yet! The new Wednesday show on Netflix started the craze

Ditto. I have no clue 🤣

I genuinely thought we were talking about a pelmet for curtains. Note to self - be more 'down with the kids' 🤣

pinkfluffybunny · 06/03/2023 14:31

My 15DS has curtains at the moment. My DH, his dad, had them when we met 24 years ago🤣.

It's just the fashion going round in circles again.

Not everyone understands American.... it would be worse if a British person posted on an American forum, they wouldn't understand either.

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet that one on the left looks like an alpaca! showilng my age

JaninaDuszejko · 06/03/2023 15:29

Curtains with short hair very fashionable here with the teenagers. And 15yo DD constantly telling me I'm so 'Gen X' for having a side parting 🙄.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/03/2023 15:31

And my nephew has the alpaca cut 😆

Using American English words because it's fashionable/ cool /,you hear it on SM or whatever isn't language evolving though. There are British English words for things like fringe and nappy so using the AE version isn't evolving the meaning of the word in any way

FKATondelayo · 05/03/2023 15:57

My curtains don't bang unless the rail falls down. Is there a support group for me?

GrinGrin

ilovepixie · 06/03/2023 17:22

Hate the word bangs for fringe. We're not American.
