Ideas for small postable gift to unwrap for a 21st birthday

Just that really - I'm paying for an intensive driving course over summer holidays for the main present, but I'd like to send something to unwrap on the day. Any good thoughts?

DD, but totally un-girly, so no makeup, jewellery etc. I gave her a leather backpack for her 18th which was a big hit. Clothes, books etc used to be good but not so much now she lives in the big city. My only thought so far is some really nice wool socks, so more inspired ideas really needed....

A nice leather purse?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/03/2023 13:36

Would she like a properly posh pen?

Sadik · 05/03/2023 13:44

She has a collection of good pens & fancy ink, so definitely right lines but again hard to pick the right addition

I feel like she uses her phone to pay for everything these days, otherwise purse would be a good thought

What about a lovely personalised keyring (something heavyweight and maybe hand stamped) or the likes from Esty. You could even get it prewapped and sent by the seller.

What about some nice soaps/ scents, which can be not "girly". Or does she like tea/ coffee and get a hamper type thing sent.

Sadik · 05/03/2023 14:12

Lovely soap is a good thought, she'd definitely like that. If she had more space I'd thought of a little stove top coffee maker, but she's very limited on storage. Keyring also a good thought, or indeed just browsing interesting things on etsy in general

I've got ages, so no problem to order things & then send them on

A nice flask/travel mug/posh water bottle?
Is she into any craft type stuff?
A really nicely bound notebook/journal?

CriticalThinkingNeeded · 05/03/2023 14:22

I agree with suggestion by@IceCreamWithSprinkles !
A luxurious, handcrafted notebook.
I had great success sending one of these as a landmark birthday gift. They're tactile cork, rather than leather, so also suit any vegans.

An AirTag or similar
Nice water bottle ( mine have Chilly bottles)

Sadik · 05/03/2023 14:46

All good thoughts but unhelpfully I've given her a lovely travel mug, nice leather journal, & water bottle over the last few years! Craft stuff - she crochets, but I gave her lots of wool at Christmas. I know she'd like screenprinting kit, but doesn't want it at the moment because of lack of space.
I think the tricky thing for gifts is space - I know she'd like various gardening tools (I know, strange 21 year old Grin ) but doesn't have anywhere to store them atm.

Swiss Army knife. My young 20-something loves hers and would not be without it now. You can get different ones with different attachments. Hers attaches to a key ring. I’ve got one too.

RRRException · 05/03/2023 14:54

I love these - not especially “girly” - v practical and teeny weeny so fit in a small bag. Have gifted them loads to YAs that age

She does have a swiss army knife @daisypond (and an Opinel for outdoors work) - but a multi tool might be just the thing

Send a ‘balloon in a box’? Something fun to make her smile?

Sadik · 05/03/2023 15:14

I'm wondering if a keyring sized Leatherman multi tool might go down well, and maybe this bee keyring to go with it

I think that’s good. DD and I have one of the Victorinox ones. They’re surprisingly useful.

Piffle11 · 05/03/2023 15:24

What about a key holder thing? Not sure if there's a special name for them ... she could put her newly needed car key and door keys in. I use one so that my keys don't scratch whatever else is in my bag/pocket.

I think the leather man multi tool is a great idea and I think she'd find it really useful

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/03/2023 15:42

I know she's not a jewellery person but what about a leather wristband?

Maybe a custom desk calendar with family photos or pictures of her favorite artists/team?
Really good wallet or a pair of gloves?
Also not something to unwrap, but you can make a birthday video her her and send it to her email as a surprise.

junebirthdaygirl · 06/03/2023 07:07

If she likes gardening could you have a nice pot already planted up delivered to her. Only if she has a balcony or even tiny outdoor space.

Good idea.

I received a larger Swiss Army knife from work in 1985 and use it at least a couple times per month. Nearly 40 years.

Kindle
Refillable leather notebook? eg
Rocket book ?

Rainbowqueeen · 06/03/2023 07:26

A book? Maybe the best seller from the year of her birth?
Or a biography of someone she really admires?

Something tech like a power bank
