Will I grow to love the laminate flooring or do I get rid?

Help me please 😅

Recently moved house. 3 bed bungalow. Was fully refurbished before we bought it. New kitchen, bathroom, windows, boiler, flooring, neutral decor...PERFECT! we have a toddler so somewhere with no work was ideal!

The laminate flooring is destroying me 🤣🙈 dramatic, I know! I’m no clean freak, but OMG how on Earth do you keep it free of crumbs/dust/hair?! 😬 I feel like I spend the day with a brush or hoover in my hand 😳
Now quite clearly with carpet, the crumbs are also there 🤣 but I can’t see them and feel them everytime I walk through the house!!

The benefits are not lost on me - toddlers are messy! He had a sickness bug the week after we moved in and being able to clean up easier was a lifesaver!

But seriously, the crumbs 😳 am I missing some amazing crumb repellent that I should be using?! 🤣 or do I just give up now and admit that the laminate life isn’t for me?! 🙈

I thought laminate was easier to sweep up and mop, much better than carpet with small children

Badger1970 · 04/03/2023 14:58

We did our dining room in it, with the intention of following through into the rest of the ground floor but my god I hate it. We spent a small fortune, it's quite springy with underlay but the noise from the dogs claws drives me mad. And when we've eaten you have to hoover/mop it as it looks so grubby. I would never have it again.

FlounderingFruitcake · 04/03/2023 15:01

Robot vacuum? One of those fancy machine washable giant rugs? Dog that hoovers up leftovers?

Robot vacuum. Sweep if needed. Turn a blind eye. Use as appropriate!

Ripleysgameface · 04/03/2023 15:05

Robot vacuum and wear slippers

lovechickencrisps · 04/03/2023 15:06

Mine has been down years and I HATE it. It's freezing cold as it's on top of a concrete floor even with a rug and it shows every crumb and mark in the world.

The only positive I've discovered is when toddlers are toilet training it's easier to clean. Apart from that BRING BACK CARPETS!!

Username24680 · 04/03/2023 20:31

@Jenn500 It’s definitely easier in terms of cleaning up spills etc but the crumbs drive me mad 😳

@Badger1970 I can’t even imagine it with pets 😳 our whole house has it flowing right through 😬

@FlounderingFruitcake @NoSquirrels @Ripleysgameface 🤣 I actually had considered a robot vacuum but I have a feeling it would never be let do it’s thing with a 2 year old in the house 🤣
Don’t even mention the dog - that’s DHs solution 🙄🤣🤣 he thinks if it goes on long enough I’ll give in and finally let him get one 🙄🤣

@lovechickencrisps I feel you!! We’re just entering the potty training stage so I know that’ll be easier to deal with on the wooden floor but I’m seriously considering ripping the lot out after the summer and turning it much more cosy for winter lol

BCBird · 04/03/2023 20:40

Turn a blind eye🤣just think all the crumbs could have been ground into a carpet🙄🤣

BCBird · 04/03/2023 20:41

Spiders are more visible too🙄

ModerationInEverything · 04/03/2023 20:43

Our robot vacuum does his work at night unless he needs and extra run around in the day. It's definitely the way to go.

Username24680 · 04/03/2023 21:29

@BCBird I’m hoping with time I might be able to turn a blind eye 😅 but for now I’m on high alert 🙈 At least if they were ground into the carpet I probably would see if feel them as much....🤣
Spiders I can absolutely deal with 👍🏻

@ModerationInEverything Are they noisy? That was one of my concerns due to it being a bungalow. We also have baby gates to stop a wandering toddler at night so the vacuum wouldn’t be able to get far 🤔

I hate the laminate flooring in our house, it's rubbish quality, never looks clean and is bloody freezing under foot. Definitely #teamcarpet here.

Annoyingly it's not been done on a room by room basis, it's been laid continously throughout so it's going to be a ball ache getting it up.

We're going to strip back and redecorate one of our spare rooms, so I'm considering cutting through the laminate at the room threshold and carpeting. If we're going to all this effort then why spoil what will be a beautiful room by leaving the cheap rubbish flooring down?

are you listening DH?

CaramelMach · 04/03/2023 21:42

I can't bear the tap tap tappity tap every time I walked across it when I had it downstairs.

Upstairs not so bad but I'm not a fan.

museumum · 04/03/2023 21:46

We’ve got large rugs on ours. I love it. The rugs create individual spaces for sitting / playroom.
I’m not sure how you’re feeling so many crumbs? Are you barefoot? We don’t keep the house hot enough for being barefoot in winter and we all wear slippers.

Username24680 · 05/03/2023 05:24

@TribeD Ours is the same 😔 we have a semi open plan livingroom/diner/playroom/kitchen then small hallway leading to the back of the house with the bedrooms/bathrooms and the laminate flows through every room bar the bathroom 😬

@CaramelMach The noise doesn’t bother me as much. Although sometimes my toddler does sound like he’s about to go through the floor 😳😅

@museumum I have put are rugs down in ours in the livingroom, playroom and the bedrooms but it just doesn’t seem to help 😳 I do wear slippers sometimes but yeah, most of the time it’s socks or bare feet 🙈 I hate the feeling of being in footwear at home lol. Toddler is the same! As soon as he gets in the house the shoes and socks are off! I did make him wear slippers over the coldest parts of the winter but he’d have the off at any opportunity! We moved from a big old draughty house that was always freezing so maybe we’ve just grown used to being cold 🤣

Is laminate very different from wooden engineered floor? We had that laid last year all over, including stairs and upstairs. I love it. We have a 2 year old and robot hoover also. Can’t say there seems to be any more crumbs than before. Have cats as well.
We only really eat at the dining table though which reduces crumb spread.

Ours it’s grippy and wood like though with texture. So I think you don’t really see crumbs in particular as it’s not completely smooth.
We took up old carpet from old owners and it was filthy and house far less
dusty now it’s gone. I would never have carpet again.

sashh · 05/03/2023 06:15

Stop eating foods that make crumbs, or eat them at the table.

I hate carpets, the best thing about getting a HA property was that I could put down laminate.

I would have loved real wood but the floor is concrete underneath.

Same.
We have a wooden engineered floor and I don't notice crumbs too badly. We also have a dog and it doesn't show dog hair.
I imagine that very pale, uniform-looking laminate is a nightmare though.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/03/2023 07:25

To lessen the noise we all wear these... and float over the floor.

It does require a bit of care when the whole family are coming in to land at the dining table, and it can be very annoying if your're the one stuck in the stack waiting for a landing slot.

Will I grow to love the laminate flooring or do I get rid?
DappledThings · 05/03/2023 08:34

I ignore the crumbs mostly. Sweep about every three days. Much easier!

Username24680 · 05/03/2023 08:44

This is what’s through the entire house. I assume it’s just laminate. Doesn’t feel like the best quality.

We do only eat at the table 😊 even toddlers snacks are at the table!

Maybe I just need time to settle into the house and then I’ll be more comfortable ignoring the crumbs 🤣🤣

I think it looks nice.
My engineered wood floor is a pita. I'll need to get it sanded as it has worn badly.
