There are always many shit number ones because they are from commercial popularity

They don’t reflect any preferences

Even when an individual does go with the flow on commercial pop there will be the ones that you think are shit, the ones you can put up with the ones you like

Unless someone’s taste is poppy (which becomes the influence on younger children) then there will be specific genres (in my early teens it was rock, then going studenty with the indie charts (but Stock Aitken & Waterman were also an indie label)

When you look back then your view of the music could change - you may not have liked the chart music at the time but it was there and ties into the nostalgic memories
