Moving to Derby, City point, Wilmorton

Hello,
Im from london and viewing a property tomorrow in city point. I like the property but am worried about the area. What’s your opinion on Citypoint and is it a good place to raise a family? Youngest is 6, eldest 12.
Im also worried that it’s not city point and is infact alvaston, which I’ve been told to avoid, so I’m a little confused.
What’s your thoughts, should I go for the property or wait it out for a better area?

Don't. Either go north of the city to Darley Abbey or better yet, look at Nottingham instead.

Dancingonthemoonlight · 03/03/2023 19:35

Wouldn't live in the centre of Derby if you paid me. I live in Derbyshire much nicer than the city.

dalmatianmad · 03/03/2023 19:42

Hi, what school would your DC go too? Lakeside primary and noel baker/merril?

There are much nicer places to live that city point, have you looked at Chellaston/Melbourne way? Or Darley Abbey/Allestree?

I've been in Derby for 46 years and I wouldn't choose City point 🤔 it's a newish development that was built on the site of my old college (Wilmorton). There's nothing there apart from a load of houses.

ArnoldBee · 03/03/2023 19:46

Yep its hubby's old college! Avoid Merrill and Noel Baker like the plague.

Londontoderby · 03/03/2023 19:52

May I ask why you wouldn’t choose city point? Is it because you prefer the village type feel or because I’m likely to be murdered when going to the shop for milk lol.
It would be Noel baker that is rated good and lakeside primary which I’m not too happy about as that’s rated poorly but will try for a better school outside catchment maybe.
Is it a dangerous area do you think?

OP posts:
ArnoldBee · 03/03/2023 19:55

Not dangerous just not where I would send my children even though their cousins go there.

Londontoderby · 03/03/2023 19:58

Thank you, I appreciate you responding. May I ask why? Is the school known for bullying, full of naughty kids etc?
It’s been rated good so I assumed it was a good school but everyone seems to be saying it’s a bad school

@Londontoderby high chance of being mugged/stabbed etc, the city centre Isn't the most ideal place in derby to live, city point is near allenton which has a HUGE drug problem, wilmorton area is incredibly run down and full of undesirables.
Town center of derby is druggy central.

Chaddesden, Spondon, Oakwood, Allestree are probably the safer/nicer parts of derby city, failing that the majority of Derbyshire County is much nicer and safer by vast amounts I've lived in Derbyshire most of my life, I've briefly lived in derby city (not the centre)

StampOnTheGround · 03/03/2023 20:05

I'd disagree with above with Chaddesden - avoid like the plague! Spondon is okay, but Oakwood and Allestree are good, along with Mickleover. Agree with previous posters about Derbyshire - maybe up towards Duffield/Belper. I'd also consider Melbourne and Findern/Willington/Repton

Rshard · 03/03/2023 20:08

Lived in Derby my whole life and agree the city centre is grim these days. Nicer areas tend to be the north of the city (I live in one of those mentioned above and it has a nice village feel, is quite self contained etc). Nicer schools on these areas and a mix of housing types too. Of course these areas will be more expensive that Wilmorton area - I also went to the old wilmorton college!

if you want close to the city centre, streets around kedleston road are nice if a bit studenty and I also like Chester Green, although there’s not really a shopping area within walking distance, except the city centre.

Seainasive · 03/03/2023 20:10

One problem with CityPoint is that there is only one way in/out. And every time there is a fun run, Ramathon etc goingvpast, you can’t get in or out. Only a few times a year but still annoying. Don’t discount all of Alvaston- some parts are really quite nice!

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/03/2023 20:13

I disagree with “a high chance of being mugged/stabbed”, I’ve lived around Allentown and Alvaston for years and have never known anyone mugged or stabbed! Perfectly safe to walk around there and lots of friendly people too.

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/03/2023 20:13

Allenton - damn autocorrect!

Ineedwinenow · 03/03/2023 20:17

Does it have to be Derby centre or would you consider a few miles out? Quarndon and Duffield if you have the budget or else Allestree, Milford, Holbrook and Belper are great areas within a 10-20 min commute to Derby centre

fantasmasgoria1 · 03/03/2023 20:17

Alvaston is fine. I wouldn't live off Harvey road though. Stick to the elvaston lane side. I personally would not live in normanton , chaddesden before the fire station, allenton, osmaston, sinfin, mackworth or the city centre. Every city has its good and bad parts. Nottingham is no better.

Ineedwinenow · 03/03/2023 20:21

Also Spondon, Ockbrook, Borrowash , Oakwood and Morley are great in the opposite direction to the areas I suggested in my last post 👍

JetPlanesMeetingInTheAir2BRefuelled · 03/03/2023 20:27

What has attracted you to City Point? Modern houses, value for money, proximity to new job on Pride Park, regular public transport? I think there are better areas to consider if you don't have ties to the city.

Londontoderby · 03/03/2023 21:22

To be honest it’s because it’s my aunts house and so we have an opportunity to have a nice, big, fully decorated house for a really good price….or a normal sized house in a good area.

What would be your preference? My aunts house is really impressive and if it was in a good area I assume we wouldn’t be able to afford it.

I grew up in alvaston. It's not a dangerous area. I haven't lived there for 10 years though but I wouldn't call in dangerous. I went to Noel baker and i wouldn't send my kids there.

Londontoderby · 03/03/2023 21:52

Why @teaandtoastwithmarmite ? Can you tell me the nitty gritty of why you personally wouldn’t send your kids and if you don’t mind also how long roughly since you was a pupil there.

I really appreciate all the responses because to be honest I’ve lost my big girl pants and am starting to overthink and worry.
should I go for the standard house in a nicer area do you think?

OP posts:
whatthebejesus · 03/03/2023 21:53

There's nothing dangerous about Alvaston or pretty much any area in derby. There are areas which are better than others and areas that some people prefer over others.

What's your budget and perhaps we can give some guidance. Alvaston/Wilmorten wouldn't be my first choice but mainly because it's just housing. Nothing else there really. Some of the roads off London road are ok - linden drive and whatever the other one next to it is. Don't know much about city point particularly. It'll have its pros and cons as per any other area.

menareallthesame · 03/03/2023 22:13

I grew up in Etwall and went to John Port but parents now live in Oakwood and sister is in little Eaton. I would not live in chad, alvaston, Allenton, city point if they were giving the houses away!

Seainasive · 03/03/2023 22:16

Noel Baker has had its problems in the past but has a great head teacher now and lovely new buildings. Not perfect yet but certainly improving.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/03/2023 09:32

@Londontoderby I went there although it was 25 years ago since I left (that makes me feel old) it's not long ago been in special measures. My DH went to landau forte and I think that is a better school. Or ST Benedict's.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/03/2023 09:33

I used to live in a terraced house on one of the streets off London road and never had any trouble so I think you would be fine.
