How much sleep?

Maybe this should be on a health board but couldn't see where to post.
Just wondering what time people tend to go to bed & get up at?
Genuinely interested as a few people at work have mentioned to me that they don't think I get enough sleep - it just came up in general chit chat & tbh when discussed I was shocked at the difference in my sleep schedule compared to theirs - so just wanted to see what the story is beyond my work group.

I aim for ten hours but prefer 12. Going to bed now and will get up 845

ifoundthebread · 02/03/2023 22:22

I can go to bed anywhere from 8pm until 4am, up at 7.30 at the latest, some days up at 5.

FrazzledFirefly · 02/03/2023 22:32

Asleep by about 1130pm normally and awake around 645am to 730am depending on day ahead.

I usually go to sleep around 1/1.30am and wake up around 7.15 on work days. At the weekend, I will usually lay in until 9/9.30am.

demotedreally · 24/03/2023 05:59

I'm wondering this too. I wake so early these days - normally 5pm ish. I am not too tired, although often sleep on the sofa in the evening

Nimbostratus100 · 24/03/2023 06:01

adults need 7-8 hours

without this, your brain won't be functioning to its optimum

you won't learn or remember things as well as you could

you may also damage your health and immune system

ForestofBears · 24/03/2023 06:25

I go to sleep around 1am and get up at 6am, but once a week I work a night shift so don’t sleep at all for about 40hrs. I am very aware that I don’t get enough sleep and this is really not an ideal situation.

Noicant · 24/03/2023 06:31

I need about 7 but at the moment regularly going to sleep between 12-1 and getting up between 5-6 (DD has decided she doesn’t need much sleep). 8 hours would be downright luxurious but I can’t sleep past 7 hours.

Adults, on average, need 7-8 hours. But it varies for individuals. Some people only need 5-6, and that's still within the range of normal.

MrsJBaptiste · 24/03/2023 06:43

Asleep by 11.30pm and up at 6.30am.

My friends think this is a very late night and are all in bed by 10pm on weekdays.

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/03/2023 06:56

10.30 up at 6.15
or 5.30 unintentionally,
5 today!

DustyLee123 · 24/03/2023 06:58

Bed at 10 pm, asleep by 11 pm, wake up any time after 5.30am.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/03/2023 07:01

I get around 7 hours. Normally asleep by 10.00, alarm at 6.00, a couple of wakings in the night, anything from from minutes to hours.

The menopause and lockdown knocked my sleeping pattern for six, but seems to have gone back to reasonable now on the whole.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 24/03/2023 07:02

My bedtimes vary - anything from 9.30 up til 1am. DH’s alarm goes off at 6.15 most mornings. I very rarely sleep through the night ( thanks menopause!) so guess my average is about 7 hours. Really miss the days where I went off to the land of nod & that was it until the morning 😢

vanishingly few
and the more research that is done on this, the more it becomes clear.

Less sleep during your healthy adult years shortens life expectancy and increases likelihood of early dementia

and anyone who thinks they are functioning well on 5 hours is likely to underestimating their potential

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/03/2023 07:12

When I was desperately lacking sleep and reading up on it a lot, the consensus in my ‘research’ seemed to be.

  1. 7 hours is the optimum. The people who live the longest get 7 hours sleep a night.
  2. 5-6 hours, or 8-9 is fine if that’s what you need on a personal level.
  3. 4 hours a night or less, as a general sleep pattern, will drastically shorten your life.

Lack of sleep is so damaging in the long run, although obviously for periods of time we will all go through stages of not getting enough - babies, menopause, money worries or any other type of worries eating away at you, and that’s fine, as long as overall you are getting enough sleep.

MathsNervous · 24/03/2023 07:14

Fall asleep 9pm, up at 6am every day of the week.

Maraudingmarauders · 24/03/2023 07:15

We try to be asleep by 11.30, and wake up at 5.30 (DH leaving) - I then doze off and on until I need to get up around 7.
I also wake up and get up about twice during the night for the loo, and usually lie awake for half an hour or so at 3am ish. I'm a very bad sleeper.
On the weekend I'll try and get a 2hr nap in one of the afternoons if I can.
Dh could sleep from 9pm to 9am (and beyond) if undisturbed.
I sleep more in the winter, but as soon as the mornings get light I'm awake.

PretzelBite · 24/03/2023 07:16

I used to sleep 10-6.30 pretty much every night. Now I have. A 5 month old baby so I get 4-5 hours spread over the night.

Bed at 10 pm, asleep by 11 pm, wake up any time after 5.30am.

Oooh good saved me typing. Same as this.

Keeween · 24/03/2023 07:19

Tend to head to bed at 10ish, awake by 7. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at more, but don’t wNt to give up my quiet evenings 😂 anyway it’s okay as it is… I know I get more sleep (and uninterrupted sleep at that) than a lot of mums to young toddlers do so mustn’t grumble!

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 24/03/2023 07:28

I aim for bed by 11 and up at 5:50. Sometimes earlier, sometimes a bit later. I wish I got a bit more but find it hard to get to bed earlier, don’t finish my day until 9 and need a bit of wind down befor sleeping

PFBToSecondary · 24/03/2023 07:49

1030-615 usually. Sometimes go a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later. Always feel exhausted when I wake up though.

cptartapp · 24/03/2023 08:02

I like around nine. Go up to bed around 9pm and tend to wake about 6.30-7.00. It's always broken sleep though, I'm up to the loo without fail and often struggle to get back (age).
