Balloons being released

Funnybunny12 · 01/03/2023 10:37

I’ve just woken up to find two balloons in my garden one stuck on my tree and one in by the shed I only noticed it as my dog was sniffing around the ballon. They had a bit of card attached to the end with some heartfelt message on. I get that people do send offs in different ways but does no one think about the environment and animals.

And the morons who release the paper lanterns with a tealight in. Bloody idiots.

Oldnproud · 01/03/2023 17:00

I think it should be illegal too.

How can it be right that people - often as part of an organised event - can release loads of inflated balloons, yet if any of us were to go outside and dump the same number of uninflated balloons onto a pavement, a grass verges, a field etc., we could quite rightly be fined for either littering or fly tipping? What's the difference?

Marblessolveeverything · 01/03/2023 17:01

Recently attended a small gathering to mark a very sad passing of a child - heart-breaking is not the word.

They organised a release of butterflies and placing of a number of bird feeders to celebrate the life of the little one - I thought it was beautiful and meaningful. There is definitely some innovative sustainable ideas needed for people to help process their grief.

I think it needs to be illegal. I feel desperately sorry for grieving people and understand the need for an outlet but it kills animals and negatively impacts the environment. It’s not just some harmless outpouring of grief, especially when it’s hundreds being released.

I agree.
It is no different to throwing loads of plastic onto the ground, as that is where it all ends up.

Hatscats · 01/03/2023 17:05

Hate it - it’s just littering 😡

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 01/03/2023 17:08

gobbyshafto · 01/03/2023 16:47

I’ll do what I please with the balloons I buy.

Hopefully banned soon so you can't buy any

Won’t happen.

ShillyShallySherbet · 01/03/2023 17:09

It doesn’t sit right with me either when I see this. I wonder if drone light shows could take over for these kind of events with pictures and messages displayed. Amazing things can be done in the sky with those.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 01/03/2023 17:09

No amount of grieving can excuse littering or endangering wildlife and livestock. Unfortunately some people are too self centred and unable to think.

SlipSlidinAway · 01/03/2023 17:10

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 01/03/2023 16:17

Nothing to defend. I stand by what I said. We can’t ban everything.

Nobody can enjoy anything in life anymore without someone whinging and moaning and going on about waste and all that bullshit.

Don’t like balloons? Don’t use them. I’m not going to stop because I do like them.

👏👏👏. Full marks for the most inane post of the day.

I have been genuinely surprised how often I have retrieved empty helium ballons, caught in a hedgerow in the middle of nowhere. I've lived here for five years and must have dragged out about 10 of them (seperate incidents) and taken them home from a walk to dispose of properly.

We do this too when our walking. I'm surprised people still think it's an ok thing to do. Let's memorialise someone by creating litter and hope we don't kill any wildlife. Confused

Monoplane · 01/03/2023 17:13

How would a ban on releasing balloons be enforced?

Do you want forensics down there looking for fingerprints so they can visit grieving families in order to fine them?

This is one of the easiest things to ban. Come on. Helium inflated balloons get banned.

Its not like moonshine or prostitution. There is never going to be a black market in helium inflated balloons.

I thought half term was over?

@FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks, you are either utterly selfish or not very bright. Possibly both

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 01/03/2023 17:19

YANBU.

Or could be goady. Or pissed. Or drugged up. But probably a bit of all of those things.

Everyotherone · 01/03/2023 17:20

@Zuffe Great Uncle Claude needs TikTok!

waterlego · 01/03/2023 17:27

Indeed @Zuffe, could just be goadiness I guess. Some people never grow out of that childhood phase of going out of their way to do the opposite of what is sensible and reasonable, purely because they are desperately trying to prove they have free will, and need to assert themselves around the grown-ups.

Zuffe · 01/03/2023 17:20

Sure.

I mean, the majority of the population buys, enjoys and quite a lot of them release balloons, but one person admitting to it on mumsnet is obviously “goady, pissed or drugged up” 😂

Quite clearly my opinion is the popular one in reality else this wouldn’t be a “problem” you’re all whinging about.

waterlego · 01/03/2023 17:37

So you think posters are lying about damage to countryside and wildlife @FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks? or you just don’t give a shit? Which is it?

Facebook hun.

Amispringy · 01/03/2023 17:39

My sister suggested it for my mums anniversary of death.

My mum loved animals and hated litter. I can't believe my sister was so dense

We blew bubbles instead

In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it’s worth bothering about. Lots of things affect the countryside and wildlife.

You can’t go through life banning everything you don’t like.

Worldwide population - 8,000,000,000 (Eight billion)
UK population - 69,000,000

Majority - "More than half of the total".

UK "buyers or enjoyers" of helium balloons according to @FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks is 34.5m people (plus 1) and as there are 28 million household, then I must conclude that @FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks is indeed:

  1. Thick
  2. Still Goady
  3. Pissed
  4. Drugged up
  5. Innocently mistaken

I dropped No 5 in as an 'off ramp'. Just in case @FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks needs a Putin-like escape.

You'd be OK with causing this would you? A dear little 3 month old donkey foal died because she chewed on a latex balloon. She died horribly with the string down her throat. This is just one example of a loved animal being killed by idiots still doing this. We have no idea how many wild animals also die.
