I was waiting till the last 3 for a high scoring crossover too.

It's a power thing (really!) - try to get as many orange starter letters and a crossover at once as possible, so that you get multiple doublings. In todays daily it took a bit of planning and downright luck with the letters to get two crosses each, one with 3 orange letters and the other with two. The rest were just 3x3s and four letter words to stop the board clogging up.
