30,000 steps a day

My dh cousin has been on a weight loss journey for the last few years and has done so well and lost an extremely huge amount of weight and has kept it off. She documents everything on her SM pages to help encourage others on the diet she follows.
She has recently started to show how many steps she covers per day and on average it’s shows around 25000 - 30000 per day.
I was quite taken a back by this. I see myself as quite active. I have a dog a walk him 3 times a day with a very long walk in the afternoon and have a treadmill which I use every other day but I’ve never hit that kind of figure before (maybe I’m not walking as much as I think lol).
She doesn’t have a treadmill and wfh full time so god only knows when she is fitting these long walks in?
How many miles do you think you would cover with 30000 steps per day? How many do you do?

We always do 30k on a day out in London.
I went to the gym, walked to supermarket and have been tidying up today and hit 22k.

That’s really interesting RelentlessForwardProgress

If you are interested, there was a really good article in the NY Times about it. Biggest Loser Study.

I used to do 25,000 a day without making any effort when I had 2 under 2. Not so much anymore though

I could have achieved that several years ago when I worked as a waitress in a big hotel. Didn't drive so I had to walk to get the bus and then it was a massive trek from the bus to work then 8 hours of work.

Now I'm in a similar job but less hours, it's smaller and even if I walk the kids to school and back on the same day (4 miles total) I only get up to about 25,000.

It's incredibly hard to hit that many if you have a sedentary job, almost impossible without putting a crazy load of effort in.

HappyHealthy23 · 27/02/2023 21:05

There was a steps thread a few weeks ago in which a woman claimed she could "easily reach 10,000 steps before lunch by walking for 45 mins" or some such claptrap. You have to wonder about some of these step counters.

VivX · 27/02/2023 21:11

I've done that twice - both times while on holiday. Had spent the whole day (probably about 6-7hrs) walking miles around a city sight seeing and shopping.

My feet were killing me the following day. Could not keep that sort of step count up day after day!

WordtoYoMumma · 27/02/2023 21:11

I average 12000 a day. Maybe once a week I'll get over the 20k mark but I have not ever once done 30k! Not since having a Fitbit anyway... I did 25000 one day last week and I was exhausted!!

Winter2019 · 27/02/2023 21:15

I do between 7000-10000 steps on a normal, not super active day

GimmeBiscuits · 27/02/2023 21:16

In an average day I'll click up about 8k, but if I am walking around in town, it'll be 10k.
If I have city day out I can easily get into the 20k region as I'll look at interesting buildings, gardens, museums, and anything else in the vicinity.

@BadAmbassador That is phenomenal, well done to you. I was planning to do it myself but Covid got in the way and I kind of lost my enthusiasm since then. I am a member of a Camino forum and all I read about is blisters, rain ponchos, rushing for a bed, pack size and crowds.

I'm sure it depends on the time of year and the route taken though. Did you enjoy it apart from the battered feet?

Briallen · 27/02/2023 21:38

I think the most I’ve ever managed is about 35k on holiday sightseeing. Could not manage it daily- would not have the time!

QuietlyConfident · 27/02/2023 21:47

Rule of thumb for walking reasonably briskly, (but not super-almost-late-for-work-fast) is a thousand steps = 10 minutes. So 30,000 is five hours solid walking. Very doable if you have an active job, but really difficult in a sedentary job unless you have a treadmill desk or you pretty much dedicate all your spare time to walking.

Thank you!
Don't give up! I did it 5 years ago and think about it almost every day. It was such a special experience.
I didn't get blisters, only needed the rain poncho 3 or 4 times in 5 weeks and pre booked all my accommodation 😂
Oh and some people get their pack transported every day. At times I wished I had done that but I felt pretty good about living out of a 30 litre pack all that time.
If circumstances were right, I would do it again for sure.

I do 25-28000 walking around for my job every day. I could easily top this up to 30k by doing an evening walk.

All this competitive step stuff wrecks my head, sorry folks.

I know one thing, everyone is different, and steps and a goal work for some, running, treadmill, gym etc. or a combo works for others.

30k steps a day is doable, but bloody boring every single day if you ask me, but then again most exercise is bloody boring over a long period. Short bursts fine, long three/four hour stints not. To me anyway.

Since I am OLD now well past 60 I am delighted to be able to do 5k walk every day except Sunday, my day of rest. Thats about 6k steps or so. I carry 5-6 kg in a backpack too when walking and lift cans of beans for my bingo wings for some minutes every evening.

I still get fkn leg cramps at night though and they are bloody awful, so painful. Had the veins checked and so on, can't find a cause so if anyone has any tips apart from toxic quinine I'd be delighted to hear. Probably my bloody age aaargh.

Walkers on the Camino de Santiago would not do that amount of walking per day, unless they are the competitive type who don't smell the roses much.

Magnesium supplements?

demotedreally · 27/02/2023 22:12

Sorry I see some others have also said that now too!

Threeboysandadog · 27/02/2023 22:16

Ds3 (16) often hits 30,000+ a day but he’s 2 miles to school, in to town and back at lunchtime, 4 miles to work and 3 miles home. If he’s not working he’s out with his friends and/or the dog, at the gym or popping to the shops for something. Even at home he’s up and down the stairs all the time. I certainly couldn’t do it.

MirandaWest · 27/02/2023 22:25

I wfh full time and get quite a few steps in although not as many as her. Although I’m not actively trying to do more steps at the moment.

i walk or run for about 30-40 min before work and the same at lunchtime. Quite often once a week I'll do a further 45-60 min walk while DD is at a singing lesson. And when I walk I’ll do it quite quickly (between 9 and 10 min per km) which gets in more steps than if I were ambling along.

I did do 40,000 steps yesterday but I walked about 5km, did a half marathon and then had a walk later on - I couldn’t do that every day!

Does she have children? My two are teenagers and so I can go out without them needing to be looked after which could be an issue for others.

SBHon · 27/02/2023 22:29

Ask her? (And then report back because I’d lovr
to know!)

Headlandblur · 27/02/2023 22:43

For me 30k steps would be 15 miles.

I walk at 3 miles per hour and run at 4.2 miles per hour.

So 30k steps is 5 hours of constant walking or 3.5hrs or constant running.

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 27/02/2023 22:54

SBHon I definitely will, when I see her as I’m itching to know too lol!

I do 25,000 steps a day, but only on work days. I do 12 hour shifts of constant walking.

Pubesofsoberness · 27/02/2023 23:05

I hit around 20k a day by doing an hours walking in the morning and an hour in the evening . I then sit on my arse the rest of the day wfh

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 27/02/2023 23:05

I’ve done over 25,000 both today and yesterday (showing 18.76km in distance today and 19.73km yesterday, which is not a surprise as I was running yesterday and went for a walk today.

Going over 35,000 is a decent day for me, device tells me I’ve done that 99 times in two years I’ve had it. I’ve gone over 65,000 just twice though. I am doing these distances, on purpose, mixtures of hiking, walking and running.

FusionChefGeoff · 27/02/2023 23:07

I only hit 33,000 when I run a half marathon Grin so that's a CRAZY number in day to day life!
