30,000 steps a day

My dh cousin has been on a weight loss journey for the last few years and has done so well and lost an extremely huge amount of weight and has kept it off. She documents everything on her SM pages to help encourage others on the diet she follows.
She has recently started to show how many steps she covers per day and on average it’s shows around 25000 - 30000 per day.
I was quite taken a back by this. I see myself as quite active. I have a dog a walk him 3 times a day with a very long walk in the afternoon and have a treadmill which I use every other day but I’ve never hit that kind of figure before (maybe I’m not walking as much as I think lol).
She doesn’t have a treadmill and wfh full time so god only knows when she is fitting these long walks in?
How many miles do you think you would cover with 30000 steps per day? How many do you do?

I used to average 30000 a day on a long shift running the floor in a large pub, so definitely doable. Though after 12 hours on my feet I was regularly exhausted and seizing up!

U1sce · 27/02/2023 20:31

My dh does over 25k when he works, hes a retail manager so running round the shop, bringing in deliveries, packing out etc. Maybe shes walking on the spot while working

mishmased · 27/02/2023 20:34

My 10 year old would do around 24/25k at the weekends and around 15/18k on a weekday. His mother on the other hand 🤣🤣🤣

I reached 30k steps yesterday. But that’s because my Apple Watch was counting the arm movements as steps when I was crocheting

This has tickeled me so much! Your arms must looks muscly as F 😂

Mycatisalwaysangry · 27/02/2023 20:35

Do it any time you feel like, it will help for sure. I simply bend forward trying to touch my feet, either standing or sitting down. I do it a few times for a minute each time.

those cramps are so painful and they come so suddenly!!

BigMacAttack · 27/02/2023 20:36

5 miles is approx 10,000 steps.

Calmdown14 · 27/02/2023 20:39

She's probably wearing it on her dominant hand and hasn't changed the settings.

I walk a lot but that is hours each day. I'd need to do 15 miles to record that on mine. I regularly do 8-10 but 15 is a proper hike that I couldn't fit in while working.

Anyonebut · 27/02/2023 20:39

How tall is she? I do a lot more steps than DH for the same distance because I am a short arse and have a short stride even fit my height, and even then I would struggle to go over 20000 regularly.

Woolandwonder · 27/02/2023 20:40

She's done amazingly well with her weight loss whatever. It's not an easy thing to do. Am guessing she walks v fast and does an hour before and after work and an hour at lunch or something. It must be really hard to maintain though, but you have to have a lot of determination to lose that much weight.

roarfeckingroarr · 27/02/2023 20:41

I was doing that during the Covid lockdown days with a small baby. Great for well-being.

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 27/02/2023 20:43

Has she told the fitbit she's left handed but wearing it on her right hand and vigorously brushing her teeth, blowdrying her hair and "grating cheese" a lot?

mickybarrysmum · 27/02/2023 20:43

I go over 30,000 a couple of times a week today was an easy day so only did 25. I seem to walk all day every day at work so it's not that far fetched.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 27/02/2023 20:43

I did just over 32,000 yesterday but I ran 18 miles. So she's gotta be doing a ton of walking!

Dammitthisisshit · 27/02/2023 20:43

I don’t see how she’s doing it wfh.
I do this on a longer walk, or I used to on a day off if I went for a couple of short walks on top of school run, picking up stuff in town etc. Can understand how someone commuting with a couple of walks either side of a train would do it. But if doing it wfh then she must be pacing whilst on calls? Or have a dodgy step counter. Mine gives me credit for moving my arms whilst hanging out washing.

Magnesium. Supplement or spray on
I use a spray and massage it into my calves before bed
Or soak in the bath in magnesium flakes

Thanks so much I'll try the cream/spray tomorrow after I've walked to Boots to get it!

Op, why would you even contemplate.. 30k steps is 4 hours of walk. Unless she's a park ranger, unachievable (and unnecessary) daily, and unsustainable. Balance out calories with a good old 10k stepcount..

Anotheanon · 27/02/2023 20:48

@PillBoxes I second magnesium. I use tablet form. Got some for my mum who has suffered with cramp for years and she thinks I’m a miracle worker.

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 27/02/2023 20:48

I usually average around 12k per day and thought that was good going but seeing some of your replies I see it’s definitely doable each day, although her wfh is desk based and as far as I know she doesn’t have a treadmill. Maybe she gets out every morning and evening?
clarepetal maybe it’s that! her dh does always look rather happy lol

Tbh honest SharonKaren I am a little bit worried about her because if she is genuinely walking that many steps per day she is burning a lot of calories but she follows a very low calorie diet, I just hope she isn’t burning off more than she is taking in.

That is about 14-15 miles for me.

I've been doing the Centurion Running One Slam comp since 1st Jan and have hit that number most days according to my Garmin. For me its a 6 mile run (about an hour) and then a couple of hours of walking. So not as impossible as it sounds if you want to cover the distance. (Sometimes for me that means doing it at 10pm with a headtorch on, sometimes it means doing some kind of walking workout on Youtube.)

I think the clue is the fact that she has previously lost a huge amount of weight. As have I. The truth is it really fucks with your metabolism. In order to not put on weight, I have to eat 1400Kcals and run 6 miles. If I don't run that, or eat more than that, I put on weight. If I want to lose weight, I have to eat 1400kcals and run at least 10 miles a day. Its shit but its not going to change.

There was a study done of previous contestants on the biggest loser show that found that 5 years after weight loss, some contestants had a resting Metabolic rate of under 1000 (and some of these were tall blokes). It is a little mentioned fact that the body tries really hard to get back up there. She's probably just being honest about what it takes to maintain after a huge loss for many people.

BadAmbassador · 27/02/2023 20:53

Walkers on the Camino de Santiago would not do that amount of walking per day, unless they are the competitive type who don't smell the roses much.

The lowest I ever did on the Camino was 26,000 and most days it was 38-50,000. But that's very different to just going about your everyday life!! I was absolutely knackered and my feet were broken after that 😂😂

Bubbles2022 · 27/02/2023 20:53

I've had quite a big weight loss and I now so between 15-20k steps a day.

I think it's quite easily done if I'm honest.

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 27/02/2023 20:53

Woolandwonder she does have a lot of determination so I probably shouldn’t be surprised she is reaching those steps every day. She has done so well with her weight loss. I think about 6 stone overall.

I used to do around 30k a day. Never owned a car so walking is my default mode of transport.

Walk DS to school - 40 minute walk. Then I'd walk to work, another 40 minute walk. Repeat at the end of the day. 160 minutes of walking, plus walking around at work and at home.

I do less now, DS is Year 10 so I haven't walked him to school for a long time. Work is only a 20 minute walk from home plus I wfh 2 days a week now.

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 27/02/2023 20:55

That’s really interesting RelentlessForwardProgress
