Racist comment or statement of fact?

7 year old DS said that a TA at his school stated "the Chinese eat dogs". He said they were talking about what people in other countries eat.

I feel there should be some context behind a statement that stereotypes people. Maybe "in the past, some of the poorer people in china ate dogs as they were starving" or something.

Another school mum said the statement didn't sit right but she didn't see it as racist.

We spoke to DS about how people have made statements like that in the past to be racist towards Chinese people and make them seem like disgusting people. I want to say something to school but I'm not sure if this is even complaint worthy... it just doesn't sound like something I want my children growing up saying or thinking.

Am I right to feel cross about this or am I overreacting??

I'm surprised somewhere in Kowloon was selling it. It's been banned for yonks, but there were always places in the New Territories where it could be had (a delicacy)

I had to Google what it tastes like. 🤦‍♀️ Apparently not dissimilar to beef.

Not if this thread is anything to go by. It's quite sad and worrying to see how many people insist that it's perfectly ok to make a loaded statement that can fuel racist abuse in spite of people of colour and people of Chinese origin telling them that it is not ok.

This is an unironic example of the IDpol stack, when you consider the rise of the far right after years of loaded statements around critical race theory and white privilege, I am brown ex Muslim where my family is from Uighur.

One thing a lot of white nights could do with actually understanding is what they are trying to fight online for and not trying to gain their knowledge from sites like Quora, it is trying to unironically impose a western ideal of the Idpol stack whilst ignoring the actual out and out racism within china.

Chinese people eat dog meat is not in anyway racist, you can find top class restaurants and street vendors in all first tier cities and further north, you can also use one further fact and state that the best/popular restaurants are ones who openly display the tradition of making sure the dogs go through a lot of pain and fear before death.

I sense you are someone who regularly cites white colonialism and warning anyone and everyone about the rise of the far right, without any sense of irony of the term 'loaded language'

I would call you out as a wumao, but it is obvious you have no knowledge of how China is and are just a white knight with an addiction to Quora and read some comic books.

I think the accepted term is 'educate yourself'

@Wilson yes, and it is unusual enough that it made front page news in all the papers. The restaurant is being prosecuted and the owner will likely serve a prison sentence if found guilty.

It’s hardly supporting your point.

I never said it’s legal to sell dog meat in the U.K., I said it’s legal to eat it. Unlike HK, where both are criminal acts.

Supporting my point?

What is my point exactly?

holachicas · 02/03/2023 06:37

@Hellsmovie
yes, and they’d probably lose their job for saying it.

why is it okay for other races to say it about white people. Why aren’t white people allowed to be offended by racism.
