Anyone else never tried turnip?

DH and myself got talking earlier about the shortage of some vegetables and our preferences. I eat most thing these days, but tendency for me is to revert to all the foods I loved as a fussy child - salad, fruit, cheese and dried bread - so I comfortably confessed to DH I'd never tried turnip. DH admitted he hasn't as well. Anyone else?

If you've tried, what are they like?

Looking at Tescos online, there aren't any to purchase, not even out of stock.

Come to think of it I’ve never tried turnip either.

Twospaniels · 26/02/2023 16:58

Search for Swede - it’s the same (similar) thing.

We often have carrot and swede - cook til soft in the microwave, mash with butter - it’s delicious

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/02/2023 16:59

Turnips are lovely. Milder than swede, great in veg soup.

EVHead · 26/02/2023 17:02

I get confused about whether people mean turnip or swede. Living in Scotland I’d never heard of swede - there was “turnip” and “white turnip”. The former is orange and was used for Halloween lanterns before pumpkins were available.

Love swede, hate turnip. 😄

LubaLuca · 26/02/2023 17:04

I like turnip, nicer taste than swede and easier to chop.

Same here in NE England. Including the turnip lantern Grin

We eat them all the time, we grow them for the sheep and use them for us too. You need to add a lot of flavour but they're v nice caramelised and roasted

unclebuck · 26/02/2023 17:10

DH always says that caramelising and roasting would render his shoe delicious so 🤷‍♀️

RamblingFar · 26/02/2023 17:10

Turnip is nicer than swede.

Can only usually get swede in my grocery deliveries though.

Suzi888 · 26/02/2023 17:11

I bought some a few weeks back, was quite nice to be honest.

dementedpixie · 26/02/2023 17:12

Do you mean the small white and purple turnips or the bigger swede?

In Scotland a swede is often referred to as turnip and I didn't know the smaller ones existed until I was a teenager. Have often had haggis, tatties and neeps although the neeps are actually made from swede.

Have had turnips in veg soup

QuillBill · 26/02/2023 17:12

Love them. (The orange ones).

Dogsgottabone · 26/02/2023 17:13

Mishal Hussain was on radio 4 this morning cooking what sounded like an incredible recipe for turnips.

Where I live the fields are full of them in December and then the sheep come in and eat all the greenery leaving the veg to rot in the soil to be ploughed back in for the nutrients.

Shampern · 26/02/2023 17:15

I don't think I've tried them, but I often eat swede and like it. Are turnips those white pink round things in stew packs?

bigbluebus · 26/02/2023 17:16

I have eaten turnips - used to put them in stews - but I can't remember the last time I saw them in the shops. Swede is much more readily available.

Oakbeam · 26/02/2023 17:18

And the NW, including the lanterns. At least it was when I was young.

dementedpixie · 26/02/2023 17:18

Small one is a turnip and the large one is a Swede. In Scotland a swede will also be called turnip

Anyone else never tried turnip?
Oakbeam · 26/02/2023 17:22

Anyway I like both sorts of turnip. The small ones and the big Swedish ones.

ScottBakula · 26/02/2023 17:27

I use to have swede mashed with carrot , esp on a sunday dinner but I havent sooked it for ages .
I cant remember the last time I gave had turnip .
I bought Moolie for the 1st time today as I fancied something a bit differernt in my salad

LaughingCat · 26/02/2023 17:35

Turnip last night, roasted up with some sweet potatoes and carrots, for a Middle Eastern style traybake. Seriously nice and reasonably cheap!

hisnameisfreckles · 26/02/2023 17:40

Nope never eaten turnip as such but do love swede (which we call turnip)
I had never really been aware of turnip not being swede until I moved to England in my late teens 😅

WiltingLobelia · 26/02/2023 17:44

I love turnips but have just realised I have only ever had them mashed with potato and/or sweet potato as a mix or as a chopped up mix for vegetable soup. With beans and chicken and a stock cube. Mmmm.

Might try them this week as a roasted veg on their own.

(Mind you, this week I bought salsify thinking 'wtf!!'. It looks like Harry Potter's wand. Still have not cooked it, mind).

Oblomov23 · 26/02/2023 17:47

I've eat nearly everything. I've only eaten turnip once or twice and not for years. All the news this week made me laugh.

It’s the opposite here in Scotland

A swede is a Swedish Turnip. All very confusing.

But love both of them in casseroles! Or mashed swede (never mashed together with carrot as it ruins it).
