Anyone else never tried turnip?

DH and myself got talking earlier about the shortage of some vegetables and our preferences. I eat most thing these days, but tendency for me is to revert to all the foods I loved as a fussy child - salad, fruit, cheese and dried bread - so I comfortably confessed to DH I'd never tried turnip. DH admitted he hasn't as well. Anyone else?

If you've tried, what are they like?

Looking at Tescos online, there aren't any to purchase, not even out of stock.

Isn't it a Rutabaga, which is a Swedish turnip, hence 'Swede'?

I thought that's what I wrote....

Didn't see your post.

I’ve made Turnip Surprise when low carbing. Basically dauphinoise potatoes but using (small) turnips instead of potatoes. Covering anything with garlic and cream makes it delicious! Don’t love swede, I find the texture a bit weird.

I think i’ve eaten turnip, it was quite woody tasting even when soft. Not awful. Also does anyone else remember that book ‘the enormous turnip’? Or was it a fever dream? 😐

Yes! Loved that story - everyone helping to pull out the enormous turnip!

I get confused about whether people mean turnip or swede. Living in Scotland I’d never heard of swede - there was “turnip” and “white turnip”. The former is orange and was used for Halloween lanterns before pumpkins were available.

Love swede, hate turnip. 😄

Same here! In Scotland the orangey bigger ones are turnip, (neeps) the small white ones are swede (Swedish turnip).
Love turnips, cooked and mashed with pepper & butter or roasted like roast carrots in the oven. Orange turnip is lovely raw.

We get turnips in the veg box quite a bit. I don’t mind them. They don’t have much flavour on their own.

Swede I hate. I usually curry it so I don’t need to taste it

Important part of a Cornish pasty

It's a stewing root veg mostly, takes on the flavour it's cooked in. Bit bland but you can cook them like potatoes layered with butter and garlic for instance. I won't be taking the advice to eat turnips though, I prefer peppers etc

A bit like eating potato but more turnippy. I quite like them mashed with butter and a splash of milk added.
You should try a mashed one, it's pretty inoffensive.

Turnippy is my favourite new adjective.

Swede or rutabaga is an ingredient in Branston Pickle.
